Meet the Golf GTI Edition 50. We already knew it was Volkswagen's fastest ever production car around the Nürburgring in the hands of, er, the extremely handy Benny Leuchter, and now we discover it's the most powerful production GTI in its 50-year history.
So, let's have at those numbers. It gets a tuned version of VW's turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder EA888 petrol engine for 321bhp/310lb ft total outputs, up on the Golf GTI Clubsport's 296bhp/295lb ft and up even more on the standard Golf GTI's 261bhp/273lb ft.

Indeed, it's only slightly down on the all-wheel-drive Golf R's 328bhp, with which it shares the same torque figure. And it's already beaten that car around the 'Ring. All that power helps it see off the zero to 62mph sprint in five and a half seconds.
Volkswagen has retuned the DCC adaptive dampers, adjusted the front differential lock and revised the steering, while the optional GTI Performance Package sees a tweaked suspension setup including 20 per cent stiffer springs, sitting 20mm lower than the GTI and 5mm lower the GTI Clubsport.
There's also new shoes in the shape of lightweight 19in forged alloy wheels on semi-slick tyres – reportedly saving around 4kg per corner – plus an Akrapovič titanium exhaust that saves a further 11kg. Not bad for a summer shred.
Looks the part too, with VW having given its 50-year anniversary special the glow up treatment in the form of a black roof, mirrors and exhaust pipes, plus GTI 50 decals on the mirrors and spoiler. Five colours are available, including Moss Green and Tornado Red, the latter worn by various Golf GTIs in the past.

No word on how many will be built, or how much it's going to cost, but expect a slight hike over the existing Golf GTI Clubsport's £43,215 starting price. Tempted?

Car Deal of the Day: Under £195 a month for a high-spec SUV

Easy to drive; plush interior Hybrid power; more than 55mpg Just £193.62 a month With their higher driving position, easier entry, and (sometimes) greater levels of interior space, it's easy to see why many families favour SUVs over conventional hatchbacks. Throw in cheap lease deals and it's often game, set and match. Advertisement - Article continues below That's true with the MG ZS, which is one of the cheapest small SUVs available on lease right now. Lease Car UK is offering the ZS for a minuscule £193.62 a month after an initial payment of £2,671.44. It's a 48-month agreement with a 5,000-miles-a-year cap, but bumping this up to a more reasonable 8,000 miles a year will only cost an extra £13.66 a month. The latest ZS is a vast improvement on its predecessor, which really carried its value-for-money feeling with pride. It now has an interior that seems surprisingly plush at this price point, with a higher-quality feel than an equivalent Ford Puma. The tech is good, with the standard-fit 12.3-inch touchscreen being a real highlight. Even better, this deal is for the top-spec Trophy model, which adds a 360-degree parking camera, heated front seat and steering wheel, rear privacy glass, and smart 'leather-style' upholstery. The last ZS came in petrol and EV power, but the current car is hybrid-only (for now). With the petrol engine and electric motor combined there's 194bhp on offer, which gives the ZS some real get-up-and-go. Plus, economy of more than 55mpg is on the table. While a Ford Puma is far more fun through corners, the ZS has an easygoing character, which will be fine for most buyers. The Car Deal of the Day selections we make are taken from our own Auto Express Find A Car deals service, which includes the best current offers from car dealers and leasing companies around the UK. Terms and conditions apply, while prices and offers are subject to change and limited availability. If this deal expires, you can find more top Volkswagen ID.3 leasing offers from leading providers on our MG ZS hub page. The new Alpine A290 Rallye is a £62k customer competition car

First Look No extra power to report, but there's upgraded running gear, racier suspension and a tweaked sound generator Skip 3 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Say hello to the Alpine A290 'Rallye'. It's the brand's first all-electric customer competition car, intended for both one-make events and open races, and will debut later this year. Though the running gear has been adapted for motorsport, the front-driven e-motor remains unchanged, maintaining a punchy 215bhp and 221lb ft of torque. Alpine has instead fettled with the ECU and revamped the monitoring systems, allowing the 52kWh battery to work more efficiently. Advertisement - Page continues below What's more, the Rallye will get a different sort of sound generator to the standard car, which tunes in with the driver's throttle inputs to make… noise. Precisely what sort of noise, we'll have to wait and see. Looks the part too, no? The body gets a roof scoop and a black bonnet with pins, finished up with a funky blue and white livery. Can't forget those 18in Evo Corse alloys either, painted in the customary shade of white and wrapped around a set of Michelin rubber. You might like Tucked behind those will be 350mm brake discs at the front and 280mm ones at the rear, hooked up to a race-bred ABS control unit. Elsewhere, the modified suspension is bolstered by ALP Racing shocks, while a ZF self-locking limited-slip diff is there to help around the twisty bits. Inside, the Rallye will get an FIA-grade welded roll cage and Sabelt bucket seats. Most important of all is the inclusion of a hydraulic handbrake - imperative for maximum slip and slide around a tight loose gravel stage. Advertisement - Page continues below Customers will have their first chance to compete at a single-race event later this year in France, where Alpine will provide technical support where needed. At certain fixtures, the manufacturer will even have its own paddock and dedicated charging infrastructure in place. Talk about getting your money's worth, eh? Money that sits in the region of €59,990 pre-VAT - or circa £62k on this side of the Chunnel. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. I don't think I'll be going anywhere

British Grand PrixVenue: Silverstone Dates: 4-6 July Race start: 15:00 BST on SundayCoverage: Live commentary of practice and qualifying on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 2 with race on BBC Radio 5 Live; live text updates on BBC Sport website and app George Russell says he "doesn't think I'll be going anywhere" amid links between his Mercedes team and four-time world champion Max have talked to Verstappen's management about the possibility of the Dutchman joining them from Red Bull next 27-year-old Briton is out of contract with Mercedes at the end of this at Silverstone on Thursday before this weekend's British Grand Prix, Russell said: "The likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year, I think, is exceptionally low."Verstappen, who is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028 but is said to have contractual mechanisms which could enable him to leave, said he had "nothing to add" on the situation."There is no decision at the moment," he said. "For me, it's not about '26 or whatever."I just focus on what I have ahead of me, work with the team. And of course a lot of people make up assumptions, but that's not me." At last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said it was likelier that Russell would be at the team next season than Verstappen, but did not deny he was speaking to the world champion's representatives. Russell said: "I don't take that personally because I made it clear from the beginning. I'm happy to be team-mates with anybody."I want to continue with Mercedes into the future. The fact is, Toto has never let me down. He's always given me his word, but he's also got to do what's right for his team, which includes me. But it also includes the thousands of people who work for Mercedes."For me, it's nothing to worry about because I don't think I'll be going anywhere. And whoever my team-mate will be, it doesn't concern me either."I know where their loyalty lies. It doesn't need to be public. It doesn't need to be broadcast to everybody."I feel I'm performing better than ever. And it's as simple as that really. Performance speaks for everything."Russell is fourth in the drivers' championship, nine points behind Verstappen, and won last month's Canadian Grand driver Alex Albon, who is a friend of Russell and a former team-mate of Verstappen, pointed to Russell's performance as team-mate to Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for three years, as well as the fact he has convincingly been ahead of his new team-mate Kimi Antonelli this said in a BBC Sport interview: "George is somehow underrated. I'm not just defending a friend here, but I don't know a driver who can beat a seven-time world champion and be not sure of a seat."He's doing a fantastic year this year as well."And as much as Kimi's getting praise, George is still beating him pretty convincingly. So I guess you can sound me standing up for a friend of mine. But even if he wasn't my friend, I'd still be saying the same words."I just hope the delay's coming from him asking for a lot of money. And if he is, he deserves it."Otherwise, George is actually one of the most adaptable drivers on the grid. And wherever it ends up being, I think he should be considered as at the very least a top-three driver on the grid."
