Voices: A ‘lower body spray' for boys? What in the fresh hell is this?
Anyone who grew up in the 90s will surely remember the 'Lynx Effect' ads, which led teenage boys to think that one squirt of this holy body spray would make them irresistible to women.
Now, the fragrance brand, first launched in France in 1983 by Unilever, has gone one step further and created a special 'lower body spray' – for, you guessed it, the nether regions.
The advert features a basketball player squirting his extremities and then another player being irresistibly drawn to them, as well as a geeky-looking bloke spraying his backside before walking through the cinema and having it sniffed lasciviously by a woman. There's also a boxer spraying his feet which smell so good his opponent is distracted by the heavenly scent.
I showed it to my teen, Charlie, who said it was 'pretty mint'. I then asked if it would make him want to buy it and – never one to over-promise – he said, 'possibly'.
He seemed to think it was aimed at athletes and I suppose that's what Lynx are doing – cleverly marketing a product for boys who want to get ripped.
As if 96-hour deodorant wasn't a hideous enough proposition, boys now have one for their private parts. I bet those lads from The Inbetweeners would lap it up. But whatever happened to having a quick shower?
The thing is, as a mum, I've already got an 11-year-old daughter who wants to spend all of her pocket money on skincare, while my eldest spends large parts of his weekends perusing the glossy-looking cologne counters of Selfridges trying to find that perfect elusive scent. And now this!
Perhaps it's time that boys were targeted in the same way that girls have been for decades – under the basic premise that there's something about them that needs fixing and that the only way that can be done is by buying a certain product. Lynx was, after all, from the same brand that produced Impulse – something every midlife woman like me probably once carried in her handbag.
But we can't deny the fact that these sorts of products, much like Femfresh for women, are targeting teenage boys and their vulnerabilities. It seems to give them the impression that a shower alone is not enough to make you fresh 'down there'.
Perhaps it's something of an antidote to other recent trends which celebrate slovenliness. First there was 'goblin mode' which was chosen by the public as the 2022 Oxford word of the year. The term, which refers to 'a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations', was the first word of the year to have been decided by public vote. It was first seen on Twitter in 2009 and gained popularity in 2022, as people around the world emerged uncertainly from pandemic lockdowns.
This was followed by the 'gross girl' trend, which went from being an insult flung around schoolyards to something you can take pride in on TikTok.
At its peak, in 2023, self-styled 'gross girl' Michelle Battersby's video of her 'gross' day to day life – which included crimes such as leaving a toasted bagel out all day and not making her bed – had over 3.6m views.
Battersby, founder of the Sunroom app, told her users: 'My account is for the kinda gross girlies. The ones that rely on dry shampoo. The ones that let their underwear take care of the last day of their period.'
I'd rather use dry shampoo than spray chemicals on my private parts, though. That's what I call really gross.

Ben Shelton uses Wimbledon big stage to plea for sister to get more time off from Morgan Stanley job
Ben Shelton may have secured his place in the sibling hall of fame. After defeating Hungarian tennis player Marton Fucsovics in straight sets in his third-round match at Wimbledon on Saturday, Shelton made a pitch to investment bank Morgan Stanley to have his lucky charm hang around for one more week. "I've been playing well this week. It's not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My girlfriend's here. Also, my sister's here. She's been here for every match that I've played this tournament so far. She's been the lucky charm," Shelton said of his sister, Emma. "But she has work back in the U.S., starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley." The revelation was met with boos from the crowd, but Shelton interrupted to make his pitch. "If any of y'all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay). We can keep this rolling, that'd be great," he said with a laugh. The heartwarming plea, in fact, worked. "Yeah, you got the week off or what?" Shelton said in a video posted to his Instagram Stories. In response, his sister was seen jumping up and down in excitement, seemingly confirming that her PTO was approved. "Shout out, Morgan Stanley," Shelton said as the video ended. Shelton has won all nine sets he played at the All England Club last week and advances to the fourth round where he'll face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. Game over for French trivia show champion after 21-month streak
The most successful contestant in the history of French television game shows was finally defeated on Sunday, after making a whopping 647 appearances and earning millions. Emilien, 22, walked away with 2.5 million euros ($2.9 million) in cash and prizes after nearly three years on the popular French question-and-answer game show, The 12 Strokes of Noon (Les 12 coups de midi). Every day, four contestants go head-to-head in multiple rounds of general knowledge questions, with one eliminated each round until the final player, the "Midday Master", remains. The "Midday Master" then answers five questions to determine their prize -- up to 30,000 euros -- and returns the next day to continue their run against new contestants. Emilien's streak spanned nearly three years, beginning in September 2023. "It's been an amazing experience over the last 21 months. I have no regrets. I never expected to stay on the show for so long," said Emilien while on set. His last name is withheld for privacy reasons. The 22-year-old, originally from western France, was studying history and geography but put his education on hold because it was too much to juggle with his record-breaking run. He said he plans to resume his studies, but will first take a year off to enjoy himself after spending up to 17 hours a day between tapings, catching up on topics he knew less about, such as celebrity culture. A longtime fan of the game show from broadcaster TF1, Emilien first auditioned at the age of 18 without success, but gave it another shot after encouragement from his grandmother. He is by far the biggest winner in French TV game show history, surpassing Bruno Lafourcade -- who also competed on the same show and took home more than one million euros in cash and prizes. Emilien's prize haul included 23 cars, some of which he says he will share with loved ones while he will sell the rest. He ran out of time to answer one last question: the sum of the two-digit code of a southwestern region of France. "When you win, you know you're going to lose eventually. I expected it from the start," he said. "I'm just happy I had the chance to play for so long." pr-dax/ekf/bc

It's like trying to find a straight guy at a Kylie Minogue concert… unless he's wearing cargo shorts and is very deep in the closet.' If there's a tiny shred of hope in any situation, Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart) will find it 'I don't do haunted castles. The only ghost I believe in is the Holy Ghost. Amen.' Blessed are those among JaNa 'It's not a bad look, right?' 'It's giving store-brand Jason Statham.' Zeke's (Alden Ehrenreich) bionic upgrade comes with a free haircut! With a wave of his hand, 'Dormammu' yanks Riri (Dominique Thorne) out of her suit 'The White House recently said that [Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill] will deliver a 'Blue-Collar BOOM,' all caps, which sounds like a new special at IHOP tied to the Smurfs movie that'll make you immediately s—t yourself.' 'What do you know about romance? You're a married woman.' 'Miss Merrigan, I may be a married woman, and I may be a teeny bit older than you, but I am at least a million times more experienced in love, life and not being an ungrateful, rude, spoiled baby!' Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan) teaches 'Squid Game math' to Nam-gyu 'Who knows, this might turn [Player] 222 into some kind of Marvel superhero!' 'Like Wonder Woman?' 'That's actually a DC superhero, but anyways….' For a brief instant, the VIPs appeared to be actual humans from our actual world 'St. Barts is known to be one of the most glamorous, ritzy islands in the Caribbean, which makes me think I'm probably not going to fit in that well… but, f—k it. I don't need to dress like a wanker to be a wanker.' And a wanker you are, Damo! 'Well, that's just a lot of words smooshed together.' Delirium (Esme Creed-Miles) isn't impressed by the Three Fates' ponderous (and vague) warning 'I hesitate to pull rank, but my great-grandfather signed the Declaration of Independence. What were your ancestors doing then, I wonder?'
