Protection order issued against sexual offender under recently amended TNPHW Act
The action was initiated against Abdul Rasak, 48, of Mettupalayam, who was booked by the police in March for continued sexual harassment on a 19-year-old girl.
It was also found during investigation that Rasak was facing a case at the Mettupalayam Railway Police Station for sexually harassing the same girl. The Mettupalayam police arrested Rasak and he was sent to judicial remand.
According to the police, Clause 7C of the recently amended TNPHW (Amendment) Act, 2025 permits issuance of a protection order if the Executive Magistrate is prima facie satisfied that an offence punishable under Section 4 of the Act or Sections 74–79, 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, has occurred.
The order prohibits the accused from attempting to communicate with the victim in any form, including personal, oral, written, electronic, telephonic contact and through third parties, said a release from the police.
A breach of the protection order by the accused is an offence under the Act, attracting imprisonment that may extend to three years and with fine upto ₹1 lakh.
To ensure the victim's safety, Coimbatore North Revenue Divisional Officer issued a one-year protection order against Rasak, acting on the recommendation of the inspector of Mettupalayam station and under the directive of the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District.
The release added that this is the first instance in Coimbatore district where such an order has been issued against an offender under the recently amended Act and second in the state to implement the order successfully.

Suspect Arrested 13 Days After Girl, 10, Sexually Assaulted In Tamil Nadu
Chennai: Thirteen days after the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district, police have arrested the suspect, identified as Biswakarma, a migrant worker from Assam. The arrest brings a breakthrough in a case that had sparked outrage across the state and raised urgent concerns over child safety. Confirming the arrest, Inspector General of Police Asra Garg told NDTV, "The case was challenging, but the Tamil Nadu police ultimately arrested the suspect." Police said Biswakarma will be produced before a court today. His arrest comes after an intensive investigation, during which the Tamil Nadu police had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh for any leads. CCTV visuals, which showed the minor girl being followed and forcibly lifted by a man, had been circulated earlier to aid identification. NDTV could not independently verify the footage, but it formed the crux of the manhunt. The incident took place nearly two weeks ago, when the 10-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly sexually assaulted in full public view. A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered, and special police teams were deployed to trace the suspect. Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai had urged the police to act swiftly, warning that "the suspect roaming free is a threat to society." The opposition AIADMK also raised questions over women and children's safety, especially in light of a recent spurt in such crimes in the state. In its defence, the ruling DMK and Tamil Nadu Police claimed that in every such case, swift action was taken and pointed to fast-tracked investigations and convictions in several recent high-profile cases - including the Anna University sexual assault, and the assault of a pregnant woman on a moving train, both of which resulted in life sentences for the accused.

Cash recovery row: Supreme Court to hear Justice Yashwant Varma's plea against impeachment; Judge claims 'no fair opportunity'
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is set to hear on July 28 the petition filed by Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad high court challenging the findings of a three-judge in-house inquiry committee and the recommendation by former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. Justice Varma has alleged that he was denied a "fair opportunity" to respond to the allegations before the committee concluded its report. The controversy stems from an incident on March 14, when a fire broke out at his residence in Delhi -- where he then served as a judge of the Delhi high court. Fire personnel allegedly discovered a large amount of cash at the site. Justice Varma was not present at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed on Friday that the Lok Sabha will take up a bipartisan motion for the removal of Justice Varma, following a consensus among political parties. Rijiju stated that 152 MPs from both the ruling alliance and the Opposition have signed the motion, and that the matter will proceed in accordance with the Judges (Enquiry) Act. "This was a unanimous decision by all parties. The motion will first be taken up in the Lok Sabha and then move to the Rajya Sabha," Rijiju said, emphasising unity against perceived judicial corruption. "We shouldn't remain in any doubt, proceedings will begin in the Lok Sabha," he said.
