Two drunk men stop bus for overtaking funeral procession, hurl abuses at cop
Trichy: Two drunk men stopped a private bus after it overtook a funeral procession at Soorakottai in Thanjavur district on Friday evening and created a ruckus. They also verbally abused a female police head constable who confronted them. Police said the bus was plying between Thanjavur and Pattukottai. At Soorakottai, the driver repeatedly honked at a funeral procession to make way and overtook it after some time. When the bus was making its return journey, around five people parked their motorcycles on the road and stopped it. The bus driver and some passengers asked the group to move their motorcycles out of the way. Police head constable Subbulakshmi, attached to the Orathanadu police station, was returning home after duty in the bus. She confronted the troublemakers while filming them with her mobile phone from inside the bus. However, two men S Rahul Gandhi, 40, and K Panneerselvam, 43, in the group abused Subbulakshmi and threatened her with dire consequences. One of them entered the bus and tried to snatch her phone. The group eventually dispersed as more people joined in chorus against them. Superintendent of police R Rajaram formed a team that launched a manhunt for the absconding suspects. On Saturday, police arrested Rahul Gandhi and Panneerselvam. They were produced before a magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody.

Protection order under amended TNPHW Act invoked in Mettupalayam
COIMBATORE: A protection order under the recently amended Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act 2025, which bars an accused from establishing contact with the victim, has been invoked in a case booked at Mettupalayam police limit in the district. Police claimed that it was the first protection order issued in the western region of Tamil Nadu. Police said M Abdul Rasak (48) from Mettupalayam was arrested by police for allegedly stalking and harassing a 19-year-old woman on March 23 this year. Investigation revealed that he was facing similar charges in another case registered at Mettupalayam railway police station, police added. Meanwhile, based on directions from the district police superintendent K Karthikeyan, Mettupalayam police requested Coimbatore North RDO (Executive Magistrate) to invoke the provision and obtained the order on Wednesday. Police said that issuance of the order can be termed as a bail bond for the accused and a protection order for the victim. "Section 7C of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (TNPHW) Act introduces a protection order to prevent the accused from contacting the victim in any manner, including contact through an intermediary. A violation of this order is a cognisable and non-bailable offence, punishable by up to three years imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 1 lakh," a senior police officer said.

Protection order issued against sexual offender under recently amended TNPHW Act
The Coimbatore District Police have issued a protection order against a sexual offender under provisions of the recently amended Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act, 2025. The action was initiated against Abdul Rasak, 48, of Mettupalayam, who was booked by the police in March for continued sexual harassment on a 19-year-old girl. It was also found during investigation that Rasak was facing a case at the Mettupalayam Railway Police Station for sexually harassing the same girl. The Mettupalayam police arrested Rasak and he was sent to judicial remand. According to the police, Clause 7C of the recently amended TNPHW (Amendment) Act, 2025 permits issuance of a protection order if the Executive Magistrate is prima facie satisfied that an offence punishable under Section 4 of the Act or Sections 74–79, 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, has occurred. The order prohibits the accused from attempting to communicate with the victim in any form, including personal, oral, written, electronic, telephonic contact and through third parties, said a release from the police. A breach of the protection order by the accused is an offence under the Act, attracting imprisonment that may extend to three years and with fine upto ₹1 lakh. To ensure the victim's safety, Coimbatore North Revenue Divisional Officer issued a one-year protection order against Rasak, acting on the recommendation of the inspector of Mettupalayam station and under the directive of the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District. The release added that this is the first instance in Coimbatore district where such an order has been issued against an offender under the recently amended Act and second in the state to implement the order successfully.
