Glasgow gears up for free weekend of BMX and skateboarding

A free urban sports festival featuring BMX and skateboarding is returning to Glasgow for a second year this weekend.
The Riverside Jam: Urban Sports Weekend will run from June 21 to 22 at the Riverside Skate Spot, running from 11am to 7pm.

The event is designed to introduce children to urban sports through hands-on sessions and live demonstrations.
(Image: Kerr Melville) Stewart Thompson, museum manager at Riverside Museum, said: "The Riverside Jam: Urban Sports Weekend offers great, free days out for all the family, as it has something fun for everyone.
"You can try out BMXing and skateboarding, enjoy live music and fantastic food, and watch jaw-dropping displays from some of Scotland's most talented bikers and skateboarders.

"Our first-ever Riverside Jam was a phenomenal success, and we can't wait to welcome visitors to the Skate Spot for two action-packed days of urban sports and entertainment."
The weekend will include 'come-and-try' BMX and skateboarding classes from 11am to 3pm, with skateboards, bikes, helmets, and pads provided.
(Image: Kerr Melville) Freestyle competitions will follow in the afternoon, showcasing some of Scotland's top skateboarders.
Saturday's programme will also include a free Go Skate talk at noon, featuring artists Raydale Dower and Toby Paterson.

They will discuss the design of the Skate Spot and the cultural impact of skateboarding and BMX in Glasgow.
On Sunday, BMX professionals including Kriss Kyle, Alex Donnachie and Sean Munro will compete in a Red Bull high air contest.
The festival is organised by the Riverside Museum in partnership with The Loading Bay, Glasgow Urban Sports, and re:ply Skateboards.
Toby Paterson, artist and skateboarder at Glasgow Urban Sports, said: "Everyone at Glasgow Urban Sports is excited about the Riverside Jam, which is exactly the kind of vibrant event that we had envisaged when we were working together with the Riverside Museum to deliver the new spot.

"It shows just what a grassroots scene can do with the enlightened support of city institutions."
Danny Aubrey, founder of re:ply Skateboards, said: 'The Riverside Museum plaza has positively impacted the Glasgow urban sports community, and having such a supportive team at the museum and at the council has helped create a destination for skateboarders and BMXers worldwide.
"We wanted to celebrate the amazing space by hosting a festival annually where everyone can get involved and see the unlimited benefits of urban sports, with the hope that it can expand each year."

Thousands turn out for Armed Forces Day in Plymouth
Thousands of people have been heading to Plymouth Hoe to celebrate Armed Forces Day. The event, packed full of family fun, runs until 17:15 BST on Saturday and is followed by a free evening concert in the evening. Organisers of Armed Forces Day say it is an opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the military community from currently serving troops to reservists, veterans, cadets and their families. Visit Plymouth said it will be a day "filled with fun" and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy and get involved with. It said: "There will be plenty of interactive displays, veteran and military villages, military vehicles and equipment to explore, plus recruitment information should you feel inspired and want to find out about careers in the Armed Forces." There will also be an emergency services area with equipment from the fire service, police, RNLI, coastguard and Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth. Throughout the day demonstrations, parades and live music will be taking place, including an air demonstration at 16:00 BST. Hoe Road from the mound at the Citadel to the junction of Madeira Road, with suspension of parking from 07:00 to 22:30. Citadel Road from the junction of Lockyer Street to the junction of Sussex Street from 17:00 to 19:00 with suspension of parking 07:00 to 19:00. Suspension of parking at Osbourne Place entrance to the Hoe to the junction with The Esplanades from 07:00 to 19:00. Visit Plymouth said there are lots of car parks within walking distance, the closest being the Theatre Royal. It said Plymouth City Bus is also offering free bus travel to military personnel, veterans and cadets with identification on the day. A wide range of food and drink will be available throughout the day and organisers ask to use cash where possible as card payments may be limited due to "poor signal". Newcastle, meanwhile, is intent on strengthening its forward line for the new season. After missing out on Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro has been identified as a target. Pedro isn't just a goal threat in and around the opposition penalty area. Indeed, the 23-year-old is extremely versatile and is comfortable playing a number of different roles across the forward line. Pedro operated as a centre forward for Brighton last season, but also as something of a number 10 behind a focal point up front. This is surely why Chelsea and Newcastle both want Pedro. Both teams already boast top-level centre forwards and so Pedro would be expected to fill in around the likes of Alexander Isak and Delap with Nicolas Jackson also a factor at Stamford Bridge. He can finish inside the area, and also outside of it. Pedro is position-less in the way he interprets his role in Brighton's fluid frontline and this makes him a good fit for countless teams at the elite level. Brighton reportedly wants more than £50m for its prize asset, reflecting the value of the Brazilian to the south coast outfit. The Seagulls have a reputation for being one of the smartest clubs in the Premier League and so Pedro will only leave the Amex Stadium if it suits the selling club. Brighton will need to find a replacement. Chelsea and Newcastle would both give Pedro a platform to prove his quality in the Champions League next season. The Brazilian is certainly good enough for this level and might even be targeting a starting place for his national team at the 2026 World Cup. This could be a pivotal summer in Pedro's career.
