Sejong University tops Korea's tech transfer earnings in 2024

Korea Herald2 days ago
Sejong University announced that its technology transfer income for 2024 was the highest among South Korean universities, posting 17.37 billion won ($12.5 million) that year.
It outpaced other top Korean universities, including Kyung Hee University at 9.7 billion won, KAIST at 8.1 billion won, Seoul National University at 6.4 billion won and Sungkyunkwan University at 4.3 billion won.
This figure is the second-highest in Korean history, following Hanyang University's 27.9 billion won in 2022, and reflects a dramatic leap from just a few hundred million won a decade ago, the university explained.
University technology transfer is the process of moving scientific discoveries and inventions from university research labs into the public and private sectors, often leading to new products, services and businesses.
The achievement stems from Sejong's longstanding commitment to structured innovation through the Education Ministry's Bridge program, which supports the commercialization of university intellectual property, the school said. The school has developed high-value, mature technologies by establishing tailored support across the research and development and startup lifecycle.
A standout success lies in its diversification of standard essential patent royalties, especially in video codec technologies. Since joining global patent pools for HEVC, VVC, AV1 and VP9, Sejong University has secured hundreds of billions of won in royalties.
'Through the specialization of a dedicated technology commercialization organization, Sejong University has been conducting demand-driven, high-value technology commercialization that is in line with the university's characteristics,' said Um Jong-hwa, president of Sejong University.
"This achievement is the result of fulfilling the university's social responsibility to return its excellent research results to society and contribute to improving national competitiveness.

Lee's special envoy meets EU leaders, highlights commitment to stronger ties

A presidential delegation to the European Union met with key EU leaders in Brussels this week and conveyed the Lee Jae Myung government's commitment to bolstering ties with the EU to address shared challenges, Seoul's foreign ministry said Thursday. The delegation, led by former Environment Minister Yoon Yeo-joon met with Antonio Costa, president of the European Council, on Tuesday, followed by a meeting with Christel Schaldemose, vice president of the European Parliament, on Wednesday, the ministry said in a release. Lee named Yoon, a high-profile political strategist, as his special envoy to the 27-member bloc earlier this week, along with three others to France, Britain and India. Lee took office early last month. In the meetings, the delegation outlined Lee's pragmatic foreign policy approach and expressed hope for working closely with the EU to "open a path for peace and co-existence on the Korean Peninsula by resuming inter-Korean dialogue, reducing military tensions and building trust," the ministry said. Yoon personally delivered a letter from Lee to Costa, conveying his message on strengthening relations with the EU. The two sides agreed to advance their substantive cooperation in advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, climate change and other areas. Costa said he looks forward to an early summit between the EU and South Korea. In the meeting with Schaldemose, the two sides discussed efforts to further deepen the strategic partnership between South Korea and the EU. They shared the view that the two sides need to expand parliament-level exchanges going forward. (Yonhap)

US expert stresses need for proper preparation against Trump's impromptu trade demands

A US expert stressed the need Wednesday for President Lee Jae Myung to make proper preparation for the possibility that US President Donald Trump could make impromptu demands should the leaders engage in phone talks on US tariffs and other trade issues. Wendy Cutler, vice president of the Asia Society Policy Institute and former negotiator of the South Korea-US free trade agreement, made the remarks, warning that absent sufficient preparation, Seoul could wind up with a deal that is counterproductive to its interests. Her remarks came as Seoul has been striving to reach a deal with Washington to avoid the Trump administration's proposed 25 percent "reciprocal" tariffs and other duties on steel, aluminum and automobiles, before Aug. 1 when the reciprocal tariffs would take effect if the two sides fail to reach a deal. "If (the leaders) are talking about closing a deal, I can't emphasize how important proper preparation is because if you get on the phone with our president, he may make new demands," she said in a podcast hosted by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. "If your leader is not fully briefed or willing to push back, then you may end up with a deal that is even more counterproductive to your national interests. So my counsel -- not only for Korea, but for any new foreign government -- (is) just make sure that if there is a leader-to-leader call, proper preparation becomes a priority," she added. Cutler went on to say, "Another risk is ...Let's just say you push back, and then Trump could get off the phone and say, 'Well, you know what? That 20 percent tariff wasn't high enough. It's now 40 percent.'" She, however, underlined the importance of a top-level engagement. "From a relationship point of view, there is nothing more important for Korea right now, for its new president to meet with our president," she said. Noting that the new Korean government might face coordination difficulties given its diverse ministries linked to trade affairs, Cutler said that "the clock is not working in Korea's favor right now." In particular, she assumed that while Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has undertaken an internal coordinating role for trade negotiations with the US, it faces more challenges than when the foreign ministry took that role decades ago. "Ministries like the agriculture ministry and others ... They are not just going to do what MOTIE wants," she said. "I think Blue House oversight is really needed here as well if this thing is going to be headed in the right direction," she added, referring to South Korea's presidential office. The expert warned that if too many newly appointed Korean ministers come to Washington, it could hinder trade talks. "That runs a risk as well because if you have too many channels and too many cooks, then it just is harder to corral everything together," she said. Cutler did not rule out the possibility that Seoul and Washington reach a broad-brush "framework" deal before the Aug. 1 deadline. "I think it's like a very heavy lift given the clock, but I don't rule it out," she said, pointing to a range of issues involved in the trade talks between Seoul and Washington. (Yonhap)
