Cobra, KL Tigers set up Selangor League title rematch

PETALING JAYA: Traditional rugby heavyweights Cobra and defending champions KL Tigers will again fight it out for the Selangor Sports Council-SRU League (Selangor League) title after booking their spots in the decider today (July 5).
Cobra held their nerve to deny a gritty UiTM Lions side 29-21 in their semi-final while Tigers drubbed RMAF Blackhawks 34-5 to advance to next week's final.
The plate-bowl semi-finals saw ARC Knight RC downing SMS Old Boys 31-19 while Royal Selangor Club edged Rhinoz Warriors 38-34.
All matches were played at Padang Astaka.
Cobra head coach Wan Norsyahmi Wan Daud said he was pleased to see his players live up to expectations.
"There was some pressure on us as we were playing on home ground but the boys' were solid when they needed to be," said Norsyahmi after the match.
"We made one or two mistakes which cost us some penalties but overall the team did well to attack and defend as a unit.
"They gave it everything they had and I am definitely proud of them."
Lions head coach Zamri Abd Kahar said his side lacked the strength in depth needed to secure the win. They had also lost to Cobra at the same stage last year.
"It was a really tough match. We trailed Cobra earlier in the match but we did well to come back strong in the second half," said Zamri.
"Unfortunately a number of our key players had to be taken off in the second half and we were not able to maintain control of the match.
"Our goal now is to maintain our third-place finish from last season when we play Blackhawks in the playoff next week."
Tigers had defeated Cobra 25-19 in the final while Lions had downed Blackhawks 27-25 in the third place decider last season.
The final and third-place playoff will be held at Stadium Sultan Suleiman, Klang next week.

Rugby-Frustrated Farrell says Pollock okay despite late withdrawal

FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Western Force v British and Irish Lions - Optus Stadium, Perth, Australia - June 28, 2025 Lions' Henry Pollock applauds the fans after the match Richard Wainwright/AAP Image via REUTERS/File Photo SYDNEY (Reuters) - British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell said Henry Pollock's withdrawal before kickoff was precautionary and reported a clean bill of health for the rest of his side after their win over the New South Wales Waratahs on Saturday. Pollock, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise this year, was named at blindside flanker for his third Lions match but was a late withdrawal from the Sydney Football Stadium clash. "It was just a bit of an awareness on a calf strain that was tight enough this morning so, knowing what we knew, there was no need to risk him," Farrell told reporters after the unconvincing 21-10 victory. The Lions have lost players for the remainder of the tour in their first two matches in Australia, scrumhalf Tomos Williams suffering a hamstring injury and Elliot Daly breaking his arm. Farrell said his team had come through Saturday's match unscathed. "That's a good positive at this stage," he said. He was less impressed with the error-prone performance of his side and suggested the Waratahs might have watered the pitch before the match to make the conditions tougher. "I mean, that's good tactics from them, isn't it? That the ball's slippy, the breakdown's ferocious enough and the line speed is high octane stuff from them as well," he said. "We kept on trying to overplay at times, certainly around halfway, and putting ourselves back under pressure and keeping them in the game. "And that amount of turnover ball is credit to them, obviously, but not good enough from us." Farrell brought his son Owen into the squad as an injury replacement for but said Wednesday's match against the ACT Brumbies would probably be too early for him. The Brumbies beat the Lions on their last tour of Australia 12 years ago. "It looks like there could be a bit of rain so that's good for us, we need to play in that as well," Farrell said. "But we also know that they're top side in the Australian division, and we also know what happened as far as the Lions is concerned in 2013, so we know it's a big day on Wednesday for us all." Rugby-Lions welcome imminent arrival of Owen Farrell ahead of Tahs clash

SYDNEY (Reuters) -British & Irish Lions players welcomed the imminent arrival of Owen Farrell on Friday as they prepared for their third tour game against the New South Wales Waratahs at Sydney Football Stadium this weekend. Farrell was called up for his fourth Lions tour as an injury replacement for Elliot Daly by his coach and father Andy on Thursday in a decision that was always going to divide opinion among fans. Tadhg Beirne, who will captain the Lions against the Waratahs on Saturday while tour skipper Maro Itoje is rested, said the inclusion of such an experienced player could only be a boost for the squad. "Yeah, great, really excited to see him," the Ireland lock told reporters at training on Friday. "Someone of his quality, and his fourth Lions tour, he's only going to bring some serious quality to the squad. So we're looking forward to inviting him in and getting to hang out with him. "Any type of leadership is only going to enhance the squad. And playing with him four years ago, I've seen all that leadership qualities that he brings and the quality of his talent as well." While Beirne played with Farrell in two tests on the 2021 Lions tour to South Africa, his compatriot and second-row partner for Saturday, James Ryan, said he had never been in the same side as the 118-cap England playmaker. "He's one of those guys that's sort of done it all," he said. "So to have him come in camp will be cool, and hopefully you might be able to pick up a few things off him." Ryan won his first Lions cap off the bench in the 52-12 win over Queensland Reds on Wednesday, a second big win in Australia after they opened their account with a 54-7 victory over Western Force. 'FIGHTING CHANCE' Beirne said the team would be looking to take another step up against the Waratahs as the Lions players press for inclusion in the test side. "That's the ultimate goal, isn't it?" he said. "For everyone here, they want to play in those tests, and the only way to do that is to play well in all these games leading up to it. "If you're not producing in these games, you're not giving yourself a fighting chance." The Waratahs have given prop Taniela Tupou a chance to promote his claim for a spot in the Australia test side but high-profile centre Joseph Suaalii has been retained in the Wallabies squad. "We are playing a high-quality test team but they've got two arms and two legs, and you just have to put them under pressure," said Waratahs coach Dan McKellar.
