Woman charged after allegedly interfering in police arrest of wanted man in Blue Mountains
Police began chasing a 34-year-old man along Railway Parade in Hazelbrook, a town about 15 minutes east of Katoomba, just before 10.20am on Monday in connection with a pursuit through the Blue Mountains last week.
Officers deployed a Taser during the attempted arrest, but the 40-year-old woman allegedly intervened, leading to a confrontation between the man and police.
The man allegedly punched both officers in the head before fleeing, prompting a police helicopter to circle overhead and broadcast urgent appeal messages.
Following inquiries, the woman was arrested in Blackheath later that day and charged with hindering police in the execution of their duty.
She was granted conditional bail to appear before Katoomba Local Court on August 11.
The search for the man remains ongoing.
On Monday, PolAir could be heard describing the man over loudspeakers as it hovered above the quiet town, leaving some residents feeling frightened.
Some took to social media to express their fears and frustrations about the police operation.
'Should we lock up? Stay inside until they have a handle on the situation? I'm a little terrified,' one resident wrote on social media.
'They are circling my block it's all we can hear right now. My eight-year-old is freaked,' another added.
'Police should update their (Facebook) page instead of scaring people. Is this guy dangerous?,' a third comment read.
The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175cm to 180cm tall, of thin build, with blond hair and a ginger beard.
He was last seen wearing black pants and a black hoodie.
'Anyone who sees him is urged not to approach him but to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately,' police said.

Three arrested in Townsville after German tourist's vehicle robbed at gunpoint
Police have arrested a trio of alleged arm robbers after a teenage German tourist's car was stolen at gunpoint in Cardwell, near Townsville. A coordinated response from Tactical Crime Squad officers, Dog Squad and Polair led to the arrest of the three offenders. 'A 27-year-old Ayr woman and 26-year-old Rasmussen man were both charged with two counts of armed robbery in company,' a Queensland Police spokesperson said. The two are expected to front the Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday, July 28. The 17-year-old teenager was also charged with two counts of armed robbery in company. He is expected to appear before the Townsville Children's Court on Monday, July 28. Police investigations are ongoing. Needles reportedly spotted at Horseshoe beach amid ongoing clean-up
Needles have been spotted on Horseshoe beach amid the ongoing clean-up of the surrounding area. Novocastrians reportedly stumbled upon what looked like discarded needles along the waterfront last week. While Transport for NSW said they weren't aware of needle waste specifically, they were working with Maritime Environmental Services to arrange a clean-up of the beach and surrounding waterfront areas around Newcastle Harbour as soon as possible. A spokesperson for TfNSW said they planned to alert the appropriate authorities about needle wastage in the area. "The amenity and cleanliness of Transport assets is a top priority," the spokesperson said. "Horseshoe beach was impacted by recent severe weather, resulting in debris, such as logs and sticks, washing up on the sand," they said. "Members of the public are reminded not to touch or pick up needles." TfNSW has been cleaning up the beach car park and nearby dunes after the area had become overrun with "vagrants", littered with needles and drug paraphernalia and was apparently so unsafe that the council's own regulatory staff have been told not to go there. Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp said he was aware of the community's concerns and was pushing for the clean-up of the area to be expedited. "TfNSW have been conducting a progressive clean of this area, with officers making multiple trips to the site this week and very regularly over the last few months," Mr Crakanthorp said. Following the removal of some vans and the relocation of others who have been long-term in the car park, TfNSW has completed a clean-up in the car park and is progressively working through adjacent spaces," he said. In a Facebook post last week, Mr Crakanthorp said the issue was complex, as many of the people occupying Horseshoe beach were homeless. "Police and Homes NSW have been working to move on vans and rehouse rough sleepers at Horseshoe Beach with appropriate housing," he said. Man dies in police custody after being tasered
A man has died in hospital after he was tasered by an officer responding to reports he had entered a stranger's home and smashed windows. The incident is being treated as a death in custody, triggering an internal investigation, Western Australian Police say. Officers were called to the Perth suburb of Embleton about 12.30am on Friday amid reports the man was behaving erratically. "Police responded to reports the man had entered a house occupied by people not known to him and had smashed multiple windows at the property," Assistant Commissioner Martin Haime told reporters. Officers found the man in the home's backyard and attempted to negotiate with him, but he continued to behave aggressively, ignoring their orders. "A Taser was deployed by an officer during attempts to detain the man," Mr Haime said. Officers eventually restrained the man and he suffered a medical episode minutes later. It is understood the man was not conscious or breathing when paramedics arrived at the scene. Paramedics transported him to Royal Perth Hospital, where he later died. "Our thoughts are with the man's family and loved ones during this difficult time," Mr Haime said. "Due to the fact the man had been in police custody prior to his death, officers from the internal investigation unit will investigate his death as a death in police custody." Officers at the scene provided medical assistance to the man. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
