Tube 'fare dodger' caught swerving £3,500 in fares using a dodgy card
A Tube fare evader was caught in action after he racked up more than £3,500 in unpaid tickets.
The man was caught by Transport for London investigators at Surrey Quays station.
He said he has been using a card his 'friend gave him' to travel for more than a year.
The card had no money on it, but the ticket barriers accepted it every time.
He was then able to push the exit gates open at stations without ever paying a penny as each tap resulted in a payment failure, MailOnline reports.
However, investigators eventually caught on to the trick, and they were able to track him down on his journey to work using CCTV.
The operation was captured on cameras as part of the Channel 5 documentary 'Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law,' which airs on Monday.
He was asked in for an interview, where the TfL staff showed the man he now owes £3,573 for over 500 journeys taken in more than a year.
Lisa, an investigator, questions the suspected fare dodger, who then changes his story, saying the card is not his and he 'found it.'
Lisa says: 'Oh that's a whole different ball game now.'
She then pulls out a scanner, which confirms that the card is faulty.
When asked about whether he knew he owed TfL money for the travel, he replies: 'My friend told me you can use this card for travelling.'
He eventually admits not paying for his morning journey after faced with evidence – and the total he has racked up, which 'might be a bit of a shock,' Lisa says.
Lisa says as the reality sinks in: 'You have had that card for over a year and they have never been paid.'
The man then apologises and signs a document admitting on more than 500 trips.
But this isn't the end of the matter as it is now up to the TfL prosecution team to look into the case and decide what happens next.
Elsewhere, the shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick decided to chase people at Stratford Tube station, where one man told him to 'f*** off' as he ran up to strangers he suspected of fare dodging.
In a video posted on X, Jenrick walks a man to TfL staff, who tell the enthusiastic MP to 'just step to the side' as they deal with the situation.
The transport authority spent almost £22 million on a fare dodging crackdown last year.
Around 3.4% of passengers avoided paying for travel between April and December last year.
TfL said it uses an intelligence-led approach with advanced tools like an Irregular Travel Analysis Platform (ITAP).
It combs through ticketing and journey data, passengers' information, CCTV and travel patterns to spot fare evaders racking up the biggest bills.
TfL recovered £400,000 through the courts after the prosecution of 360 worst evaders. More Trending
One of the focus areas is contactless payment card fare evasion.
Another fare dodger caught recently had to pay £1,472 in fines after avoiding payment on 202 journeys, TfL said.
In a previous episode, a 'short farer' was caught after he had avoided paying £20,000 in tickets on his commute from Surrey to London Waterloo.
The next episode of Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law is on Channel 5 airs at 9pm on Monday, June 2 on TV and on the streaming platform.

Attacker pulls out huge knife and lunges at young woman in London park
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A party at a London park ended with dozens of screams after an attacker began swinging a large knife at a woman. Snapchat video captured the moment the hooded perpetrator whipped out the blade in Gladstone Park, north London, on Monday. The weapon was inches from slashing the terrified victim, as she backed away while others fled. A man filming the attack can be heard screaming, 'She backed out a shank, are you mad?' meaning she brought out a knife. Police officers descended on the scene just after 10pm after the video went viral on social media, but they could not locate the alleged knife-wielder or weapon, the force told Metro. There were no reported injuries and arrests have been made. Metro revealed that almost half of all murders in the UK over the last two years have been due to stabbings or violent incidents with a blade. Figures show that out of the 898 recorded murders in the UK over the last three years, 443 of these murders were committed using a knife, stabbing, or a sharp instrument. Data gathered from Freedom of Information Requests (FOI) from 38 police forces across the UK between 2022-2024 highlighted the worrying rise. Labour says it will bring 3,000 police officers back on the streets alongside a five-step plan to 'tackle the issue 'take back our streets'. This includes the banning of ninja swords this summer. The sword – which has become a weapon of choice for street killers in the UK – will be banned from August 1. More Trending The move follows tireless campaigning from the family of Ronan Kanda, who was killed on a Wolverhampton street in a case of mistaken identity in 2022. A spokesperson for the Met Police told Metro of the Gladstone Park incident: 'On Monday at 10.30pm, police attended Gladstone Park, Brent, having been made aware of a video on social media of a woman with a knife. 'Officers saw no one who matched the description of the woman in the video. 'No one was injured, no weapons were found and no arrests were made. Enquiries continue.' Russian boxer sparks anger after giving orangutan her vape to puff
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A Russian boxer has sparked anger after she gave her vape to an orangutan at a safari park. Anastasia Luchkina, a 24-year-old who has represented Russia at international level before turning professional last month, filmed herself giving her e-cigarette to Dana, a 10-year-old female orangutan who lives at Taigan safari park in Crimea. In the video, Luchkina can be seen puffing on a pink vape and blowing out vapor before holding it to Dana's lips through one of the holes in the enclosure. The orangutan puffed on the vape before blowing out a plume of vapor. Luchkina then repeated this on multiple occasions before Dana could be seen swallowing the tip of the vape. The safari park's veterinarian, Vasily Piskovoy, has since revealed that Dana has become ill from the vape. 'While smoking, Dana took the cap off the vape and put it in her mouth,' Piskovoy said. 'I'm worried that Dana might swallow the cap, because this plastic can cause intestinal blockage and vomiting. 'Today, she's already eating poorly, feeling unwell, and sleeping all day. 'If there is an intestinal blockage, then all responsibility will fall on the shoulders of this girl. Danochka is like a child. She will put everything in her mouth, and God forbid, she might swallow it. 'This is very dangerous. It is not so dangerous that she smoked, although this is also very bad, as it is dangerous if she swallowed this cap, then, God forbid, Dana will have to be operated on.' The safari park's press secretary, Tatyana Aleksagina, revealed that Dana lives alone in her enclosure. 'This is clearly intentional cruelty to an animal. She knew exactly what she was doing and definitely harmed the animal. This is a crime,' Aleksagina said. 'Moreover, there are only a few orangutans in Russia now. Because of the sanctions, no one can bring them, and they practically do not reproduce in captivity, unlike chimpanzees. Orangutans live alone. 'Rarely in a zoo, except perhaps in Moscow, is there both a male and a female. We have been looking for a mate for Dana for five years now.' Luchinka's coach, Vladimir Akatov, told TASS that she is now facing 'expulsion' from the sport over the incident. 'She doesn't smoke, and this is such a foolish thing,' Akatov said. More Trending 'An adult, 24 years old, a member of the national team. It's clear that we will discuss this episode.' A statement from the Russian Boxing Federation read: 'The Russian Boxing Federation is against smoking and calls for careful treatment of animals. This incident will be taken under control of the disciplinary and ethical commission, which will apply sanctions provided for by the code of ethics. 'By committing such acts, an athlete not only desecrates their own honor, but also undermines the authority of other athletes, the coaching staff and everyone who puts their efforts into the champion's path every day. 'Being an athlete is not only about medals and honors, but also about decent behavior in any life situations and being an example to follow.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Two EastEnders exits in early BBC release as characters flee Walford for good
This article contains spoilers for tonight's episodes of EastEnders, which air on BBC Two at 7pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) and Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison) have called time on their life in Albert Square. It's been a dramatic week, and it's only Tuesday! As viewers of the soap have learnt, Bernie has been stealing thousands of pounds from the Panesar family's business accounts after being made a trustee by twisted patriarch Nish (Navin Chowdhry). He'd took the blame for her brother Keanu's (Danny Walters) murder, but she knew that it was actually six of our favourite East End leading ladies. Fearing that her fraudulent behaviour was about to be exposed, she made a last ditch attempt by pinning the blame on Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), who had been acting as accountant. To make matters worse for Vicki, she had actually wanted in on the scam, demanding half of the money in exchange for her silence. In the first of today's two episodes, she was furious to see that she still hadn't received her share from Bernie. What she didn't realise was that Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) was plotting his revenge, and he wasn't going to let her off lightly. He lured her partner's son Joel Marshall (Max Murray) into his restaurant, before locking him in the walk-in freezer. Using Joel's phone, Ravi then instructed Vicki to head over to Walford East. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video She pleaded for the Panesars to believe her innocence, and Suki (Balvinder Sopal) gave her the benefit of the doubt. She told Ravi to set Joel free – but Vicki still had 24 hours to confess. Bernie watched on with a smug face, unaware that Ravi had actually clocked onto her devious ways and was actually just buying time to find concrete evidence of her wrongdoings. She booked flights for her and Felix to move to Spain, and then produced her laptop to further incriminate Vicki. Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) then dropped a washing up bowl full of water over the device, so that Ravi could take it 'for repair' – actually getting brother Vinny (Shiv Jalota) to install spyware onto it. The drama continued in the second instalment, as Bernie began to pack her bags and say her goodbyes. She urged Felix to join her, telling him that she'd seen his boyfriend Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) cosying up with Callum Highway (Tony Clay). Felix told her that he wanted to be able to make his own decisions, and she should go without him. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? However, matters quickly escalated when he caught the men kissing, and he made a split second decision to head to Spain. Felix also couldn't get over the fact that Johnny was well aware of Keanu's murder. Having transferred a final £25k payment into her account, Bernie booked a taxi. But Suki was blocking her path. More Trending Bernie pleaded with her, Denise Fox (Diane Parish), Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth) and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), asking them to allow her to start afresh. They'd all had an opportunity to return to normality following Keanu's death, but she couldn't. Suki remained adamant that Bernie wasn't going anywhere – but when the other women began to pity her, she stepped to one side. Bernie and Felix boarded a taxi and drove off into the distance, as a frantic Ravi tried to stop them. A delay on the spyware meant he'd only just seen her transfer the cash.
