Yankees' Max Fried gives optimistic update on blister issue

Max Fried still hopes that he won't miss any time with the blister on his left index finger that he suffered in Saturday's start against the Cubs.
Since the left-hander isn't pitching in Tuesday's All-Star Game in Atlanta — a decision that was made before Fried suffered the injury in Saturday's loss at the Stadium — Fried and the Yankees get the benefit of the break, with their next game Friday against the Braves.
Fried said after Sunday's 4-1 loss to Chicago that it remained too early to tell how the blister would recover, but after a day, it was 'definitely going in the right direction.'
Still, manager Aaron Boone said they could push his start back depending on how it recovers over the next few days.

And even prior to Fried not being able to pitch in the Midsummer Classic, the former Brave reached out to Detroit's Tarik Skubal about potentially starting the game instead of Fried, since he's heard Skubal had expressed a desire to get the start and is in the midst of another potential Cy Young season.
'I feel like, from my end, if he wanted to start the game he deserved to do it,'' Fried said of why he called Skubal. 'He has my full support.'
After putting up a 1.92 ERA in his first 17 starts as a Yankee, he's allowed 10 earned runs in 14 innings over his past three starts (6.43 ERA).

While the Yankees hope Fried is back without needing an IL stint — something he needed due to blister issues in four seasons during his time with the Braves — they'll undoubtedly need more starting pitching in the second half, which is where Luis Gil figures to come in.
The right-hander, sidelined since the spring with a lat strain, impressed in his first minor league rehab start on Sunday with Double-A Somerset.
Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, threw his expected 50 pitches and was sharp, allowing just two hits — one homer — and a walk while striking out six in 3 ¹/₃ innings.
Prior to the outing, Boone said Gil would need 'a few' rehab starts before he's considered an option to rejoin the rotation in The Bronx.

Trent Grisham didn't play Sunday and appeared in just two of the final six games prior to the break while dealing with left hamstring tightness that's bothered him the past two weeks.
Boone said the injury limited Grisham in center field and on the basepaths, which led to his diminished playing time over the past week. The manager hopes getting five straight days off before the Yankees resume play in Atlanta on Friday will help Grisham return to full health.
With Grisham out, Cody Bellinger started in center and had his career-high 17-game hitting streak snapped, as he went hitless in three at-bats.
Gerrit Cole, out for the season following Tommy John surgery, said Sunday he's begun work with a plyo ball and is 'about a month away' from beginning to play catch.

Cameron Boozer called Duke 'overlooked,' and I can't wait to hate again
I'm going to share something in confidence this morning and all I ask in return is for it not to be thrown in my face at a later date: I was kinda rooting for Duke last season. I know, I know. It pains me to admit as much as it pains you to read, but hear me out. I wasn't directly rooting for the Blue Devils. Growing up a Terps fan, I hated them as much as anyone. The problem is I just really enjoyed watching Cooper Flagg play basketball. So, while I didn't actually care about the result of their games, my hope of seeing a great Flagg performance was, by extension, me rooting for Duke. I feel gross even typing that. It brings me immeasurable shame, only eased by the suspicion that my split interests weren't unique last college basketball season. A lot of us hate Duke. A lot of us also enjoy great players -- and Flagg was able to have one of the greatest freshman seasons ever without being that traditional Duke brand of dislikable. Those two things were hard to reconcile. Luckily, today, I have good news for those of us who want to restore the feeling: the Boozer twins are here. Specifically, I'm talking about Cameron Boozer, the five-star kid of Carlos who was named the Gatorade National Athlete of the Year last night at the ESPYs. He wasn't given time for a speech, and judging by a recent interview he gave ESPN, that was probably for the best. Because diving into that story this morning, I couldn't believe what I was reading. Boozer actually let these words come out of his mouth about Duke: "I think we're very overlooked right now, but once the season starts, that'll change for sure. ... I think just playing together, playing hard, defending, competing, we're going to be in a spot to get [to the Final Four] just like they did last year." Excuse me, what?? Duke... overlooked!? Next thing you know he'll be telling me about the uphill battle he faced to become a top prospect as the son of a former NBA All-Star. I know a Cowboys-Lakers-Yankees fan when I hear one. ESPYS: 16 fabulous photos from the red carpet This is nonsense of course. Nobody is overlooking Duke. The Blue Devils just played in the national championship game and they have the third-best odds (+1300) at BetMGM to win next year's title. Though the team is moving forward without Flagg and its other freshman standouts lost to the draft, Duke once again brought in the top recruiting class, which is simply the new normal down there in Durham. That class includes two other five-star players, Boozer's four-star twin Cayden, and the crowned jewel himself, Cameron -- a projected top-three pick in Bryan Kalbrosky's early 2026 NBA mock draft. At this point, we just expect Duke to be good every year. If Flagg said something similar last summer, forgive me for missing it. I would have reacted the same way. But thank you, Cameron Boozer, for bringing me to my senses. Comments like that are an easy way to make sure I never get caught slipping again. 2026 NBA Mock Draft While Cameron Boozer is a top-three pick in BK's new mock, he isn't the projected No. 1 pick. That distinction belongs to AJ Dybantsa of BYU (still weird to think about), who Bryan has landing in Utah, because of course: "The Jazz have an obvious plan as they enter this phase of their rebuild process after losing key rotation players like John Collins, Collin Sexton, and Jordan Clarkson. They're trying to get a high draft pick, and the connections to AJ Dybantsa are obvious. The 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup MVP transferred to prep school in Utah before committing to BYU, where Jazz governor Ryan Smith and CEO Danny Ainge are both alumni and donors. Dybantsa would pair well on the wing with talented Utah rookie Ace Bailey." BK is the best draft prognosticator in the game, so definitely check out his early mock to familiarize yourself with some of the top names to be on the lookout for. The NFL has a 2nd-round pick crisis NFL training camps are due to begin soon, but 30 of the 32 players selected in the second round of April's draft have yet to ink contracts with their respective teams. As FTW's Christian D'Andrea wrote, the reason might have to do with the guaranteed deals of the two players who did sign: "The answer may lie in Schwesinger and Higgins' contracts. The two signed fully guaranteed deals -- the first time that's happened under the NFL's most recent collective bargaining agreement (CBA) signed in 2020. Higgins received four years and $11.7 million. Schwesinger got four years and $11.8 million. While there's no one official reason for this rash of holdouts, the most likely culprit is that teams don't want to dole out all those guarantees." Red Sox Predicted to Cut Ties With Jarren Duran in Trade for 3-Time All-Star Closer
The Boston Red Sox have turned their season around after the postseason looked like a longshot. They have won 10 straight games and are in a position to add players at the trade deadline. The Red Sox bullpen has been a strength of the team. Their 3.44 bullpen ERA is the fifth-best in baseball, but that does not mean they should neglect adding to the group. Aroldis Chapman was an All-Star this season and has a 1.18 ERA with 17 saves. However, he will be a free agent after the season. The Red Sox could target a closer with club control to help them this season and beyond. Jarren Duran is under club control through 2028 and may be the odd man out in the outfield. CBS Sports' Mike Axisa predicted the Red Sox would use Duran to land Emmanuel Clase from the Cleveland Guardians. "Boston has more good outfielders than outfield spots and the Guardians can spare an end-of-game reliever," wrote Axisa. "I will not predict a one-for-one trade -- I'll say there will be more pieces involved to even things out -- but Clase for Duran will be the meat of it. The Red Sox get a late-inning dominator and clear the way for a Roman Anthony/Ceddanne Rafaela/Wilyer Abreu outfield. The Guardians get 3 ½ years of a power/speed threat who can play center field, which is exactly the kind of player they can never afford in free agency. Cleveland won't give Clase away. To trade him, they'll need to get multiple years of an all-around impact player, and that's Duran." There aren't many relievers who could remove Chapman from the closer's role this year. However, Clase is one who could make Chapman a setup man. Clase has been one of the most dominant relievers over the last few seasons. Since 2022, he has a 1.92 ERA and 153 saves. He led baseball in saves in 2022 and 2023. Last season, he had a 0.61 ERA and 47 saves. This year, he has a 2.91 ERA and 20 saves. However, since the start of May, he has a 1.20 ERA and 15 saves. He would be a luxury addition for the Red Sox this year. He and Chapman could essentially start putting the game away in the eighth inning. However, he is under club control through 2028 and would give the Guardians stability at closer beyond just this year. Meanwhile, Duran, who was an All-Star last season, has seen a slight decline. However, he is still slashing .258/.318/.431. He has been floated in trade rumors all year. Anthony is not going to be traded, Rafaela has already signed an extension and Abreu is younger than Duran with more club control, making Duran the likeliest from the group to be dealt.
