10 more SANDF officials arrested over murder and kidnapping of Hawks officer Frans Mathipa
Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Christopher Singo said the 10 suspects handed themselves over to the Hawks serious organised crime investigation unit in Johannesburg.
'They are all SANDF members and face similar charges,' he said.
The 10 suspects are expected to join the two soldiers who were arrested on Sunday at the Randburg magistrate's court on Monday.
All the suspects face charges of murder and kidnapping.
Mathipa was fatally shot while driving on the N1 near Hammanskraal in August 2023 when the assassins pulled up next to him and opened fire.
The Sunday Times reported he had been investigating the abduction of alleged Isis leader Abdella Abadiga from the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg and was looking into suspicions that South African military special forces were involved.

Kubayi noted that she had recently briefed Members of Parliament on the security measures in place for prosecutors but stressed that these need to be reviewed and strengthened in collaboration with other stakeholders in the justice and security cluster. Shop fined R600,000 over cigarettes must donate 504 desks to schools
A Mpumalanga store found guilty of selling illicit cigarettes has been fined R600,000 and ordered to buy 504 durable, high-quality double-seater desks for local schools. Initially, the shopkeeper and two directors of the business were charged but charges were withdrawn against the individuals after the company directors entered a plea bargain with the state, and only the company was charged. According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Col Magoseni Nkosi, more than 4,000 packets of illicit cigarettes valued at R107,700 were seized during a raid in September 2024. The shopkeeper, Riaz Moolla, 42, was arrested by the Hawks Secunda-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. The two company directors, Fatima Moolla, 62, and Suliman Ismail Moolla, 67, were also charged. The provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Maj-Gen Nico Gerber commended the investigation team, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the judiciary for their hard work on the case. 'It is an interesting sentence. Criminals are again out of pocket due to their crimes. The community is benefiting from this sentence, and it will definitely help the next generation in their education,' Gerber said. The company was sentenced for contravention of the Tobacco Products Act, contravention of the Customs and Excise Act and contravention of the VAT Act. Police probe extortionists demanding R1,000 teacher 'protection fees'
Eastern Cape police are taking seriously threats by extortionists targeting teachers at a secondary school in Ngqeleni. The organised crime unit is investigating who is behind a threatening note discovered last weekend at Dalibhunga Senior Secondary School. 'The note, allegedly from an extortionist group, demands a monthly 'protection fee' of R1,000 from each teacher,' said police spokesperson Brig Nobuntu Gantana. 'Due to the serious and organised nature of the threat the case has been assigned to the provincial organised crime unit for investigation. 'SAPS urges school staff, learners and the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the provincial extortion hotline on 082-387-1561 or Crime Stop at 08600-10111. No arrests have yet been made.' Acting provincial police commissioner Maj-Gen Thandiswa Kupiso said: 'We are treating this threat with urgency.
