Residents relieved as Panthalkudi STP is reactivated after one year

Madurai: The Panthalkudi sewage treatment plant (STP) on the northern bank of the Vaigai river is back in operation after lying idle for more than a year, providing relief to residents concerned about untreated water entering the Vaigai river ahead of the monsoon.

The two-million-litre-per-day (MLD) facility, built at a cost of 3 crore in 2021, was dismantled a year ago when work on the 1.3km main arm of the Goripalayam flyover sliced through its site. With the flyover's deck-slab work now underway, Madurai corporation has reconstructed the plant a few metres downstream on land identified in consultation with the state highways (SH) department, which bore the relocation cost of roughly 1 crore.
The restart comes barely a week after chief minister M K Stalin inspected the heavily silted Panthalkudi channel during his city visit. Civic officials hope the revived STP will prevent raw sewage from flowing directly into the Vaigai, especially when lakhs of devotees converge on the riverbank for Chithirai festivals.
A senior corporation official said the plant was commissioned last week after trial runs showed "satisfactory treatment efficiency."
"We re-laid the inlet mains, repaired the clarifier, and installed new disinfection lamps. All parameters are within permissible limits," the official told TOI.
Civic activists, however, have criticised the relocation as a symptom of poor planning. "How could the corporation miss the flyover alignment when it set up an STP just three years ago? Now we're spending another 1 crore—public money wasted," said M Rajan, president of Vaigai Nathi Makkal Iyakkam.

Calling the present capacity "woefully inadequate," he pointed out that roughly 8 MLD of sewage flows through the channel on peak days. "At the very least, they should have doubled the capacity while shifting the plant," he argued, adding that the facility remained shut throughout the recent Chithirai festival, when demand is highest.

Priests conducting tarpana puja in S'patna to get ID cards

Mandya: The priests at the four ghats in Srirangapatna town, which are renowned for immersing the ashes of deceased persons and conducting post-funeral rituals, will soon be issued ID cards. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A rate chart will be prepared to protect the interests of the devotees. Meanwhile, the Srirangapatna Town Municipal Council earned Rs 95 lakh from auctioning the cleanliness works on these ghats. The four ghats of Srirangapatna, i.e., Paschima Vahini, Dodda Gosai Ghat, Sangama, and Srirangaswamy Temple, have been identified for the rituals where Rs 100 will be collected as cleanliness charges. Thousands of devotees from across South India visit these ghats to immerse the ashes of deceased persons and perform various rituals. "This amount is not new. Earlier, too, we were collecting (money). But we incurred around Rs 7 lakh loss as the collection amount was less than the expenses. Now, in the auction, we got a good response," explained municipal council in-charge president L Dinesh to TOI. Meanwhile, the council decided to issue ID cards for the priests to perform the rituals, besides publishing a rate chart. "The priests who perform the rituals are directed to enrol with the council, and ID cards will be issued to them. This will help the devotees," said municipal council in-charge chief officer Rajanna M. According to authorities, based on the directions of the Karnataka high court following the filing of Public Interest Litigation, the district administration and the council have taken up initiatives to save the Cauvery River water from pollution in these four ghats, which are known for ash immersion and post-death rituals. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Two companies came forward to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on proposals to keep the River Cauvery clean in these ghats," explained officials. Meanwhile, the priests welcomed the council's decision. Priest Bhanu Prakash Sharma said the council's decision to issue ID cards for the priests will protect the devotees from all kinds of cheating. "Many times, I receive complaints that in the name of rituals, devotees are cheated. If the ID cards are made mandatory, it is possible to streamline the entire system," he said. He also welcomed the rate chart, saying many times devotees are asked to pay Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 for the rituals, which can be performed for just Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000. Corp's spl squad to monitor waste dumping near airport

T'puram: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the city corporation has formed three four-member squads dedicated to curb illegal waste dumping in the vicinity of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The move is part of a broader effort to reduce bird strikes near the airport, a recurring safety hazard linked to the accumulation of food and poultry waste in nearby open areas. The squad, which will operate 24/7, will be equipped with two vehicles — one designated for patrolling the area and the other for immediate waste removal. Health and enforcement officers will jointly oversee the operations. In the event of any violations, the squad will hand over the offenders to the local police for registering an FIR. Corporation secretary Jahamgeer S told TOI that bird strike incidents already saw a decline due to improved waste management. "With the formation of these special squads, we are aiming to bring the number of bird strikes down to zero," he said. According to the corporation officials, the primary reason for congregation of birds near the airport is dumping of biodegradable and poultry waste, which attracts scavenging birds. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Bird activity near the runway poses a critical threat to aircraft during takeoff and landing. The new squad's mandate includes stringent surveillance of key hotspots, awareness creation among locals and strict legal action against repeat offenders. The squad will operate in three shifts every day — 6am to 2pm, 2pm to 8pm and 8pm to 6am, ensuring continuous monitoring. A rotating schedule of staff members, drawn from various departments, including sanitation, health and enforcement, has been created to support the squads' operations. Contact details of the responsible personnel for each shift have also been shared with departments concerned to ensure coordination and accountability. To further support this initiative, the corporation has partnered with local ward-level committees and residents' associations. A WhatsApp number will be released for citizens to report incidents of waste dumping or public nuisance near the airport. Quick-response teams will verify complaints and initiate action. This initiative is part of a larger project under the 'Airport Clean Zone' concept, which includes identification and cleanup of illegal dump sites, deployment of camera surveillance in vulnerable zones and improved coordination between municipal and airport authorities.
