Mamata raises Durga Puja grant to Rs 1.10 lakh, BJP alleges move to woo clubs ahead of polls
Last year, the state government provided ₹85,000 as a grant to Puja committees. At the time, the Chief Minister had declared that this year a grant of ₹1 lakh would be given to each committee. However, she eventually announced an additional ₹10,000, which the opposition BJP has alleged is an attempt at 'buying favour' from thousands of local clubs ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal.
Addressing a coordination meeting of Puja committees at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Banerjee said, 'Durga Puja is not just a religious celebration. It is the lifeline of Bengal's cultural identity. Our praner utsab (festival of the heart). We are proud that UNESCO has recognised it as 'intangible heritage'.'

‘Disgusting': Congress lashes out at BJP-JD(S) coalition over verdict
Expelled JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna broke down in court on Friday after a Special court in Bengaluru convicted him in a rape case filed by a 48-year-old former domestic worker. The court is set to pronounce the sentence on Saturday. 'Disgusting': Congress lashes out at BJP-JD(S) coalition over verdict Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, was found guilty in one of the four rape cases registered against him. Reacting to the verdict, Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge targeted the BJP-JD(S) alliance over their continued silence on the matter. Calling the crime 'disgusting,' Kharge said the BJP had failed to live up to its own 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' slogan and accused the party of shielding its allies. He said that the party needed leaders like himself and (deputy chief minister) DK Shivakumar to distract people from matters like the case against Revanna. 'Let's talk about this again. Isn't the BJP their coalition partner? Isn't their relative a minister in the central government today? BJP leaders need Priyank and DK Shivakumar to cover up all this. Otherwise, their true colours will be revealed, won't they? Tell me, have they spoken about this even once? Did they say even once that what JD(S) did was wrong? What Prajwal did was are making excuses. Do they say what Munirathna did was wrong? All these are rape cases,'Kharge told reporters. He reiterated that Revanna's conviction should have prompted his retirement from public life. 'Definitely disgusting. BJP says 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', what do you say to this now?' he said. Despite the high-profile conviction, JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, Prajwal's grandfather, did not issue any reaction. The party's spokesperson also chose to remain silent. Gowda had recently issued a statement against US President Donald Trump's 'dead economy' remark but has not responded to the case involving his own family. Former deputy chief minister and BJP leader CN Ashwath Narayan said, 'The verdict on Prajwal Revanna has come. I don't have any information on that right now. The law will take its course. We'll see what legal options he pursues. Everyone should follow the rules. He has been convicted, and we'll see what can be done in the case. We will share more details after understanding it fully. No one should be sexually exploited.' Former Mandya MP Sumalatha, reacting to the court's decision, said, 'When there is a court order, no matter who it is, the order should be followed. The court has clearly told that he is guilty.' Revanna's conviction, which comes ahead of the court's sentencing on Saturday, has not only reignited debate over political accountability but also placed pressure on his party and allies in the NDA to respond publicly. (Photo: X) The initiative, part of the third phase of the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign, aims to sensitise over 8 lakh students from Classes 9 to 12 on the perils of drug addiction. The curriculum will be rolled out in 3,658 schools and includes 35-minute sessions held every fortnight over 27 weeks. These sessions will feature documentaries, quizzes, interactive activities and poster campaigns, focusing on busting drug-related myths, resisting peer pressure and promoting healthy choices. Experts and scientists will contribute to delivering this programme, which forms a core component of the state's preventive strategy. Kejriwal emphasised that Punjab's location along the international border had made it vulnerable to drug trafficking. He said the state government was adopting a zero-tolerance policy, having already arrested over 15,000 drug traffickers, seizing more than 1,000 kg heroin and demolishing properties amassed through the illegal drug trade. He criticised rival political parties for allegedly supporting known drug lords, accusing them of prioritising personal gains over the welfare of the state. Chief minister Mann said the transformation in government schools had restored public trust, with many students now shifting from private to public institutions. He blamed the previous governments for allowing drugs to proliferate for political and financial gain. He reiterated his government's commitment to justice, referencing the ongoing legal action against high-profile figures like Bikram Singh Majithia. Each village to get gyms, playgrounds: Mann To further isolate the youth from drug temptation, Mann announced the construction of gyms and playgrounds in every village. He also shared a dedicated WhatsApp number (9779-100-200) for citizens to confidentially report drug-related activities. The chief minister emphasised that rehabilitation of former addicts remained a priority to help them rejoin society with dignity. Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia praised Punjab for leading this educational reform and warned traffickers of strict action. Cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains credited the Akali-BJP regime for the drug crisis and hailed the current government's efforts to root out the menace through strong policy and education. Also present at the launch were Punjab education secretary Anindita Mitra and other senior officials. CM, Kejriwal meet family of slain trader in Abohar On Friday, chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal also visited slain businessman Sanjay Verma's family in Abohar to offer condolences and express solidarity. Sanjay, 54, was gunned down by three bike-borne assailants in a busy commercial area of Abohar in broad daylight on July 7. Nearly a month later, the shooters remain out of police grasp. Meeting Sanjay's brother Jagat Verma, Mann and Kejriwal praised the Verma family's contribution in uplifting Abohar's image through hard work and enterprise, assuring their full support during this difficult time. Reaffirming the state's commitment to justice, Mann informed the family that two gangsters involved in the murder had already been neutralised in a police encounter and assured that every accused will be brought to justice without exception. He further stressed that the safety of Punjabis remained the state's top priority and every measure was being taken to ensure it.

State ‘gravely insulted': CM Pinarayi Vijayan on National Film Awards for ‘The Kerala Story'
Kerala has been ' gravely insulted ' by the film The Kerala Story winning two National Film Awards, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday. Sudipto Sen was named best director and Prasantanu Mohapatra the best cinematographer for the film. The award winners for 2023 were announced by the Union information and broadcasting on Friday. The film, which released in May 2023, claims to depict how women from Kerala were converted to Islam and recruited by the Islamic State terror group. The filmmakers initially claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had joined the Islamic State, but when asked for evidence, they altered the trailer to state that the movie was a 'compilation of the true stories of three young girls'. On Friday, Vijayan said that by honouring a film that 'spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred', the jury had 'lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar'. The Sangh Parivar was a reference to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the parent organisation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, and its affiliate groups. 'Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision,' Vijayan said on social media. He added: 'It is not just Malayalis, but everyone who believes in democracy, must raise their voice in defence of truth and the constitutional values we hold dear.' Congress leader KC Venugopal said that The Kerala Story 'deserves to be in the dustbin '. 'It peddles a rotten agenda and maligns my beautiful state of Kerala,' said the Alappuzha MP. The film getting the National Awards is 'the most perfect example of how the BJP sponsors and promotes hate from the highest echelons of government', Venugopal said on social media. 'Kerala will never ever tolerate this insult it has received from the government of its own country,' he said, adding that the people 'will punish the BJP so hard that they will not even dream of gaining any acceptance for generations to come'.
