In Bahraich, Adityanath slams 'glorification' of Salar Masood

Time of India10-06-2025
Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
on Tuesday opposed the glorification of
Salar Masood
, revered as a warrior-saint from 11th century, saying the punishment given to the "foreign invader" after being captured "guaranteed him a place in hell according to Islam".
He was speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of a statue of
Maharaja Suheldev
and the launching of 384
development projects
worth Rs 1,243 crore in
Bahraich
.
Maharaja Suheldev, an icon of the Rajbhar community, had defeated and killed Ghaznavid general Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masood in a battle on the banks of the Chittora Lake in Bahraich in 1033 AD.
"I had said on the soil of Bahraich that glorification of
foreign invaders
should be stopped and that the national heroes must be honoured. And 1,000 years ago, such a tale of courage and bravery was written by Maharaja Suheldev on this very soil of Bahraich," he said.
Adityanath said that it was Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
's instruction that national heroes should be honoured.
Live Events
"History may have done injustice to him (Maharaja Suheldev), but this double-engine government will not allow it," he said.
Referring to the battle in Chittora, Adityanath said, "To stop the barbaric foreign invader who moved from Ghazni along with his 3-lakh-strong army to loot India, Maharaja Suheldev led the resistance from Mathura to Bahraich... By the time the invader reached (here), half of his army had already perished."
"When he (Masood) reached Chittora, Maharaja Suheldev had 20,000 to 25,000 bravehearts while there were 1.5 lakh warriors with Salar Masood.
"But, these 20,000 to 25,000 bravehearts killed them ruthlessly. Evil Salar Masood was caught alive and he was given such punishment that it guaranteed him a place in hell according to Islam ('Dusht Salar Masood yehaan zindaa pakra liya gayaa, aur ussko sazaa bhi aisee hui ki jo Islam ke anusaar jahannum mein jaane kee guarantee deta hai')."
The remarks come in the backdrop of the controversy over the Bahraich district administration denying permission for the annual 'Jeth Mela', which was traditionally held at the dargah of Salar Masood from May 15 to June 15 and drew lakhs of pilgrims.
In an official statement, the administration on May 3 cited the prevailing atmosphere of public anger following incidents like the Pahalgam attack and Sambhal violence and concerns surrounding the amended Waqf Act as the reasons.
The Allahabad High Court had on May 17 declined to grant permission for organising the annual fair at the dargah. However, in its order, the court's Lucknow bench allowed rituals and other related routine activities at the dargah.
"There should be no events in the name of foreign invaders... If the main event of Bahraich is organised, it will be in the name of Maharaja Suheldev ji, it will be in the name of Balark Rishi, it will be in the name of Adishakti Maa Pateshwari Devi," Adityanath said on Tuesday.
Attacking the previous governments led by the Samajwadi Party and others, the chief minister questioned why Suheldev was "not honoured" after independence.
"They were afraid to anger their Muslim vote bank and were worried that their appeasement politics would fail. That is why they did not speak a word against the foreign invaders," Adityanath said.

'Come, let us unite': MK Stalin hails Thackeray brothers' anti-Hindi powerplay; vows to 'teach BJP a lesson'

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Saturday welcomed the thaw in ties between Thackeray brothers against the "imposition of Hindi" in Maharashtra " by the Bharatiya Janata Party. A critique of the three-language policy under NEP himself, Stalin slammed the Centre for "withholding Rs 2, 152 crore in funds under Samgara Shiksa Abhiyan" and asked what languages are being taught as a third language in Hindi belt schools. "Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the people of Tamil Nadu, who have been waging a generational battle for linguistic rights to defeat Hindi imposition, have now transcended state boundaries, stirring a storm of protest in Maharashtra. BJP , which acts unlawfully and anarchically by declaring that funds will only be allocated if Hindi is taught as a third language in Tamil Nadu's schools, has been forced to retreat for the second time in Maharashtra, where it governs, out of fear of the people's uprising. The enthusiasm and oratory of the victory rally held in Mumbai today, led by brother Uddhav Thackeray, against Hindi imposition, is truly exhilarating," Stalin wrote on X. — mkstalin (@mkstalin) "I am well aware that the Union government, which prioritises the promotion of Hindi and Sanskrit full-time, has no answers to the questions raised by Mr. Raj Thackeray: 'What is the third language taught in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan?' and 'Hindi-speaking states are lagging behind—why impose Hindi on the people of progressive non-Hindi-speaking states?' Will the Union government change its vindictive stance of withholding ₹2,152 crore in funds under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan for Tamil Nadu unless it accepts the new education policy that imposes Hindi and Sanskrit under the guise of a three-language policy? Will it immediately release the funds legally due for the education of Tamil Nadu's schoolchildren?" he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Grupo Energía Bogotá CFD: Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo solo $100 Actualidad Empieza ahora Undo Tamil Nadu chief minister also vowed to teach BJP and its allies "a lesson they will never forget!" "Come, let us unite! Tamil Nadu will fight! Tamil Nadu will win!" Stalin said. This comes after Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chiefs came together at the "Awaz Marathicha" rally to celebrate the rollback on what they called the government's bid to "impose" Hindi over Maharashtra. The Fadnavis government had issued a Government Resolution (GR) on April 16, making Hindi a compulsory third language for students in Classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools. Since the announcement, both parties had opposed its implementation. Sena (UBT) and MNS called the policy an indirect imposition of Hindi. Uddhav said that the decision was similar to the Emergency, while Raj urged schools not to follow the government order, calling the imposition of Hindi an "anti-Maharashtra activity." The fierce opposition eventually compelled the government to retreat from its decision on June 29. The government also announced the formation of a committee under educationist Dr. Narendra Jadhav to suggest the way forward and oversee the implementation of the language policy. The panel has been given three months to study the issue and prepare a report.

Telangana: KTR accepts Revanth Reddy's challenge for public debate on farmer welfare

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 5 (ANI): Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President KT Rama Rao (KTR) has formally accepted Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's public challenge to debate on what each government has done for Telangana's farmers. In a sharp rebuttal delivered at Telangana Bhavan, KTR invited Revanth to fix the date, time, and place of the discussion, declaring his readiness to face the debate 'anywhere, anytime.' KTR, however, took a jibe at the Chief Minister's preparedness, stating, 'Revanth Reddy doesn't even have basic knowledge on agriculture. I am generously giving him 72 hours to prepare. Otherwise, he'll show up and talk about 'basins' and 'okra', making a mockery of himself and the office he holds.' He said even a bull next to a farmer could explain how agriculture thrived under the leadership of KCR. Accusing Revanth Reddy of acting as a covert ally of Chandrababu Naidu, KTR said Telangana's water resources were being diverted to Andhra Pradesh under the guise of projects like Banakacharla. 'Revanth is looting Telangana's water and funds, all to please his political mentor. This is not public governance, this is covert rule,' KTR charged. Drawing a sharp contrast between the BRS and the Congress administrations, KTR said that while BRS ushered in 'Raithu Rajyam' (Farmer's Rule), the Congress has brought back a version of 'Emergency Rule' reminiscent of Indira Gandhi's regime. 'From punishing farmers to pushing them into endless queues for fertilisers, Congress has only brought suffering,' he added. Highlighting the achievements of the BRS government under former Chief Minister KCR, KTR recounted landmark farmer welfare initiatives: the successful implementation of Rythu Bandhu with over Rs 73,000 crore directly deposited into farmers' accounts, free 24/7 electricity for agriculture, revival of over 46,000 tanks under Mission Kakatiya, and India's highest increase in paddy production. 'KCR turned farming into a celebration. Telangana today is the number one state in inland fisheries, generating Rs 30,000 crore in value. All this is the result of vision, not slogans,' KT Rama Rao stated. Taking direct aim at Congress, KTR stated that the Revanth Reddy government had failed to fulfil its major promises. 'Not a single woman is receiving the Rs 2,500 monthly promised by the Congress. Scooters, jobs, and unemployment allowance all turned out to be lies. Telangana's daughters and sons are waiting for answers,' the BRS Working President said. He further alleged that Congress has cheated farmers by reducing the promised Rs 50,000 crore farm loan waiver to just Rs 12,000 crore. 'The Revanth government owes every farmer Rs 19,000 under Rythu Bharosa. They have not paid even the crop insurance premiums for three months,' he said. KTR also ridiculed the Congress party's attempts to claim credit for schemes and appointments made during the BRS regime. 'Revanth is boasting about issuing appointment letters for jobs already filled during our tenure. Would he dare say the same in Ashok Nagar?' he challenged. In a scathing remark, KTR added, 'Congress talking about farmer welfare is like demons reciting the Vedas. And Revanth claiming Indiramma's legacy is laughable when all that's visible under his rule are dried-up borewells, burnt transformers, and endless queues for urea.' KTR extended an open invitation for the debate: 'You can choose the Assembly, Ambedkar statue, Kondareddypalle, Chintamadaka, or Kondangal. If none of these suit you, I'll be at Somajiguda Press Club at 11 AM on July 8, ready to expose the truth before the media.' He concluded with a strong message: 'During our rule, we never made noise even after transferring Rs 73,000 crore to farmers. Revanth celebrates after giving just one crop's worth of support. Tell the people, how much did you promise, and how much did you deliver? Farmers will ask. Telangana will ask.' (ANI)

Kerala: Youth Congress workers stage protest over Kottayam building collapse

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 5 (ANI): A group of Youth Congress workers staged a protest march outside the official residence of Kerala Health Minister Veena George in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, demanding her resignation over the building collapse at the Kottayam Medical College. Police used water cannons to disperse the workers of the Youth Congress and detained them. This comes after a building block collapsed at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam, claiming an individual's life and injuring two others on July 3. Earlier on Friday, a group of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) youth wing workers also staged a protest march outside the Kerala Health Minister's residence in Thiruvananthapuram. BJP workers also held a protest on Friday, demanding Minister George's resignation over the issue. Minister for Ports, Cooperation, and Devaswoms, VN Vasavan, described the Kottayam Medical College building collapse as an 'unfortunate' incident and announced that the Kerala government would provide immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the affected family. He said, 'CM visited the spot yesterday itself. Rs 50,000 will be given as immediate help to the family. The State Cabinet will discuss and decide on financial help for the family. Kottayam Medical College is one of the best-performing hospitals in India. The incident is unfortunate.' He further clarified that there was no lapse from the government side and added, 'Did not ask to stop rescue operation, it was for making way to let the Hitachi excavator enter. The rescue was only possible with the help of a machine.' 'The health minister said yesterday that nobody was stuck there because the hospital superintendent told the minister that the building was not in use,' he further said. Shifting the blame on the previous government of the United Democratic Front (UDF), he said, 'In 2013, the PWD (Public Works Department) submitted a report about the condition of the building. Then the UDF government did not act on it.' (ANI)
