St. Louis Shock Sweep Home Major League Pickleball Event To Go Top Of The Table
St. Louis' dynamic duo of Gabe Tardio (L) and Hayden Patriquin (R) led their team to an undefeated ... More weekend at home. There's no rest for the weary; just a few days after the exciting Mid-Season tournament in Grand Rapids finished up, a handful of Major League Pickleball (MLP)'s teams headed right to St. Louis for the eighth of ten regular season events. The St. Louis Shock played host to the weekend's festivities, which they held at the Chaifetz Arena on the grounds of St. Louis University. The arena is named for the Chaifetz family, who also happen to be the owners of the hosting St. Louis Shock team, and who personally guaranteed this event to be the 'biggest event of the season." One thing is for sure; the setup of the Arena made this look more like a full-on professional sporting event than the league has ever had before; even at our nicest facilities, most pickleball tournaments are held at Country Clubs or parks where temporary stands are built; in St. Louis the arena look and feel really showed what MLP's founders intended; a home-supported team event where tickets are sold and fans show up just to watch, and not also to play in the event. Key Links for tracking the event this weekend, which featured livestreams from the two primary courts at the facility on MLP's YouTube channel and on Transaction Recap See my separate story from earlier discussing the massive Ben Johns trade and its implications for the title race and the league in general. Premier League Recap Day 1 Observations Day 2 Observations Day 3 Observations Quite the entrance for ST. Louis' captain Anna Bright. Day 4 Observations CJ Klinger (L) teamed up with Columbus partner Andre Daescu (R) to help clinch 4th place, for now. Challenger League Recap Day 1 Observations Day 2 Observations Day 3 Observations Day 4 Observations Team Standings Update post Event Here's the teams who made moves up or down the Standings in this event. In Premier In ChallengerWhat did we learn this weekend? What were our top three Takeaways from the competition this weekend? Media Pick' Em Contest Update MLP Super-Fan Matty Pickles (aka Matt Klitch) runs a season-long Media MLP Pick'em Contest on Twitter, where all the pundits in the sport are participating. Here's how we did this week, and where we stand overall. Summary: I had my worst week predicting matches yet. I missed four matches outright, including both Dallas losses, and took a penalty point as well for missing my 'lock of the week' when Brooklyn shocked Columbus on Sunday afternoon. I maintain a very small lead over Jim Kloss, aka 'the smartest man in pickleball," for the season long competition. Next up on the Pickleball Calendar? According to my Master Pickleball Schedule, we're right back into Week 9 of MLP, this time heading to Dallas. The Dallas field is loaded. All three of the league's top teams are there (NJ, STL, Dallas) along with the dangerous Texas Ranchers. Lastly the LA Mad Drops and their new acquisition Johns will be in action for the first time, which should make for a super-interesting weekend. All match stats quoted in this article are courtesy of PickleWave. Visit for the premier source of Pro Pickleball data, including match replays, highlights, stats, and discussion. PickleWave has more than 22,000 matches in its database across all the pro tours. Also, a great thanks to The Dink's Erik Tice, who maintains a fantastic MLP detailed data breakdown and makes it publicly available at this Google XLS link. Tice's data has proved invaluable this year as MLP does not make match data available at this detailed level at present.

Why Baltimore Orioles' Adley Rutschman May Face an Uncertain Future with Team
The Baltimore Orioles selected catcher Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, envisioning that he would become a perennial All-Star selection. Now, questions are being raised about the star catcher's future in Baltimore. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently wrote about why Rutschman's future with Baltimore could now be in question. While sources close to the organization said the use of their top draft picks wasn't a reflection on any lack of confidence in Rutschman, there are still lingering doubts. 'Rutschman's long-term future in Baltimore is not as certain as it once appeared. He is under club control for only two more seasons. The Orioles' interest in signing him to an extension might be waning. Their top prospect, Samuel Basallo, also is a catcher. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal on Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman Related: 2025: .227/.319/.372, 8 home runs, 20 RBI, .691 OPS, 96 OPS+ in 242 at-bats In the 2025 MLB Draft, Baltimore used its first two picks on catchers. The Orioles selected Auburn's Ike Irish with the 19th overall pick, signing him for $4.418 million. A few selections later, the team took Coastal Carolina catcher Caden Bodine with the 30th overall pick, signing him for $3.113 million. However, there is some context required with the selection of Irish. While he was announced as a catcher, Baltimore believes he could transition to the corner outfield and first base. In his final season with the Auburn Tigers, he split time between right field, designated hitter, and catcher. Adley Rutschman contract (): $5.5 million salary (2025), arbitration eligible (2026), arbitration-eligible (2027), free agent after 2027 season Even with that caveat, the selections mean that three of the Orioles top prospects are now catchers. That includes Samuel Basallo, rated by MLB Pipeline as the ninth-best prospect in baseball. This season, Basallo has a .974 OPS with 19 home runs and 48 RBI in 208 at-bats with Triple-A Norfolk. Rutschman's offensive production has also dipped in recent years. After posting a .268/.369/.439 triple-slash line with an .808 OPS, 122 RBI, and a 187-157 K-BB ratio in his first two seasons (986 at-bats), he's delivered below-average run production ever since. In the last two years, Rutschman has a .244/.318/.385 line with a .703 OPS and a 148-90 K-BB ratio in 813 at-bats. Over that span, he ranks 14th in OPS (.703) among catchers with 600-plus plate appearances. The Orioles are certainly hopeful that Rutschman turns it around at the plate when he comes off the injured list, but the organization has already fallen well short of expectations this season. At the very least, there now seems to be some doubt around the league about Rutschman's future in Baltimore. 7 Baltimore Ravens on the roster bubble entering training camp
With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Ravens who are squarely on the roster bubble. The Ravens have a dominant roster, with ten players landing in the top ten rankings from ESPN's positional poll. Baltimore has few holes on the roster, and even less opportunity for an under-the-radar or veteran player to steal a job or cause a surprise cut. In five days, the entire team will return to the Under Armour Performance Center motivated after an offseason of slights and trash talk from looming opponents. With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Ravens who are squarely on the roster bubble. QB --Devin Leary Baltimore didn't select a quarterback in the NFL draft and signed no signal callers in the undrafted free agent class. The Ravens have an MVP as QB1 and a solid backup in Cooper Rush. Baltimore did select a quarterback in last year's NFL Draft, Devin Leary, out of Kentucky in the sixth round, but it didn't work out too well. Leary was cut in the preseason and then signed to the practice squad. If the Ravens carry two quarterbacks on the roster, Leary could be released and signed to the practice squad again. RB Rasheen Ali Baltimore didn't draft a running back and only has four players on the roster at the position. Henry is an All-Pro, Justice Hill is a solid No. 2 running back, and Keaton Mitchell provides a home run threat. Ali needs a strong training camp to warrant the Ravens carrying three running backs. WR Malik Cunningham Baltimore has ten wide receivers on the roster after selecting Colorado's LaJohntay Wester in Round 6. Cunningham is the only player in the position who is not a natural wide receiver but offers special-teams abilities. Cunningham needs an intense training camp to warrant a roster spot over Dayton Wade, Anthony Miller, and Keith Kirkwood. TE Zaire Mitchell-Paden Baltimore has a big three at the tight end position, and two of the top players in the league. Charlie Kolar is the clear No. 3, making things difficult for Mitchell-Paden. DT-C.J. Okoye Okoye, a Nigerian native, first joined the Chargers as part of the International Player Pathway Program. He had a sack in his first organized football game in the preseason. He'll compete in a position group that includes Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, John Jenkins, and Jayson Jones. OLB David Ojabo A former second-round pick entering the final year of his rookie deal, Ojabo will battle Adisa Isaac, Tavius Robinson, and rookie Mike Green for snaps. Things can only go up for Ojabo after he played in 13 games last season. He has four sacks in his first three seasons, and it's now or never for the former Michigan pass rusher. OL Ben Cleveland Cleveland saw action in all 17 regular-season games as a backup at left guard, plus both playoff contests. The 2021 third-round pick finished the final year of his rookie deal and had no major suitors on the open market. Baltimore added three players to the NFL draft and has solid depth in key positions. Cleveland could be the odd man out if Emery Jones, Carson Vinson, or Garrett Dellinger established themselves at the offensive guard position.
