This offhand remark appears to be the first public confirmation of Google's long-rumored initiative. According to prior reporting, including a November story we covered here , Google is not building an entirely new operating system from scratch. Instead, the company is planning to migrate Chrome OS features and functionality directly into Android.That means Android is expected to take the lead as the core system, with Chrome OS components integrated into it over time. This approach allows Google to unify its efforts without forcing a complete reinvention, while also aligning with Android's recent push toward improving its large-screen experience.In fact, Android has already started evolving in this direction. Google has introduced a range of updates specifically aimed at enhancing productivity on tablets and laptops. These include a proper desktop mode, windowed multitasking, better support for external displays, and improved app behavior on large screens.Samat's interest in how users engage with laptops today suggests the project is still in development, with user feedback likely playing a role in shaping the final result. iPhone 17 now rumored to feature Apple A19 chip
A while back, we saw a rumor that claimed the upcoming iPhone 17 would be equipped with the same Apple A18 chip as its predecessor. Well, it turns out that GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu is now backtracking from his previous claim and expects the iPhone 17 to feature the all-new Apple A19 chip, which will also power the iPhone 17 Air. iPhone 17 renders in Green and Purple If you were also hoping for more RAM on the baseline iPhone 17, that's apparently not going to happen. The latest report from Pu suggests the device will once again feature 8GB LPDDR5 RAM. Meanwhile, the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will receive faster LPDDR5X RAM. iPhone 17 family dummy units The entire iPhone 17 series is also rumored to bring Apple's self-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip. The vanilla model is expected to offer a larger 6.3-inch OLED, which may finally get a 120Hz refresh rate though it won't be of the LTPO variety (ProMotion in Apple lingo) like on the Pro series. Google and Samsung are making me more and more excited about the Pixel 10 series
For a lot of mobile tech enthusiasts (and especially hardcore Android fans) out there, the most exciting product announcements of 2025 might already be in the rearview mirror. If you had asked me at the very beginning of the year, I'd have probably expected to be in a similar position by now, as I was also mainly looking forward to Samsung's two big 2025 Unpacked events. But with the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition 7 globally unveiled at last, my excitement... for a totally different device (or four) is unexpectedly growing. That's right, I am now looking forward with (cautious) delight to Google's Pixel 10 series launch next month for a couple of key reasons. While a little optimism never hurt anyone (or anything), too much of it can definitely set unrealistic expectations for an unannounced family of high-end handsets and thus substantially reduce the chances of said handsets ever achieving commercial success. So, yes, I may have hoped for a few seconds a couple of months ago that at least one member of the Pixel 10 lineup would be cheaper than its Pixel 9 series counterpart, but realistically, the best case scenario was always one with unchanged price points across the board. The Pixel 10 Pro is likely to come with a familiar design and a familiar price point. The "vanilla" Pixel 10 ? If it retains the Pixel 9 's base $799 pricing (as has been rumored for several months now), its value proposition might prove unrivaled hard to rival, especially when Samsung is likely to come dangerously close to that mark with a potentially underwhelming Galaxy S25 FE soon. It's as if Samsung is intentionally trying to make Google look good, which brings me to quite possibly the search giant's biggest mobile hardware achievement this year. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold may look repetitive at first glance, but these images don't tell the full story. Of course, then you've got the likes of the Honor Magic V5, which packs a truly ginormous (by any standards) 6,100mAh battery in China, but obviously, that's a different (regional) story. In the (inexplicable) absence of a OnePlus Open 2, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold could well become a US battery life champion, which I know is something we've all wished for at least once in the last couple of years. And mind you, while this bad boy certainly doesn't look as thin and as stylish as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in those leaked renders from a while back, its design and overall thickness seem very close to what the Pixel 9 Pro Fold currently offers. That means Google might be able to considerably boost the battery size and slightly expand the cover screen real estate without adding much bulk, which sounds like an amazing engineering feat. Maybe even more amazing (at least in my book) than Samsung making the Z Fold 7 4.2mm thin in unfolded form. Oh, and let's not forget that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has also been expected for a little while to offer IP68 water and dust resistance, thus beating the (theoretical) durability of all its key US rivals. That's yet another major detail that's practically etched in stone after the latest report on this device, as well as another big reason why I'm more excited than ever for Google's August product launch event. iPhone Fold's crease-free folding screen to be made by Samsung Display
Once again, a new rumor claims Apple's first foldable iPhone will use a crease-free folding screen made by Samsung Display. In fact, Apple had no input into the panel's design, it's all Samsung on this one - and this is notable because of how rarely it happens, as Apple generally likes to customize every single part it uses in its devices. Not this time, though, and the reason is allegedly to "ensure stable mass production" of the foldable iPhone, planned to arrive in the second half of next year. A custom display solution may not have achieved the same yields as what Samsung Display can offer with its own design. Apple's decision to go all-in with Samsung Display's crease-free solution will benefit the latter's suppliers, including Fine M-Tec, a key provider of internal hinges, which has emerged as the leading beneficiary according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned source of Apple-related information from the supply chains. According to him, Fine M-Tec will have an 80% share (or more) of the supply of this part. The internal hinge is a key part of a crease-free folding screen, as this metal plate helps distribute and control bending stress, preventing the display material from exceeding its elastic limit. And that's how the likelihood of creasing is minimized, Kuo explains. For all of this to work, the metal plate must be highly integrated with the display design, and that's exactly what Samsung Display and Fine M-Tec have achieved. For Apple's folding iPhone, laser drilling will be used to create microstructures that better guide stress distribution and enhance crease resistance. Fine M-Tec should start shipping display metal plates for the foldable iPhone in the first quarter of next year, with unit prices apparently being in the $30-35 range. Shipments are reportedly expected to reach 13-15 million units in 2026, but those aren't the projected sales numbers for the iPhone Fold - they will be lower, more such plates need to be produced than actual iPhone Folds shipped due to yield losses and repair stock requirements.
