AI-based CCTV cameras, traffic restriction: High security at Puri Rath Yatra
The Puri district administration has deployed AI-based CCTV cameras to monitor the festivities and ensure security, surveillance, including traffic management during the Ratha Yatra 2025, All rituals related to the Rath Yatra are being conducted as per schedule amid heightened security arrangements.(PTI)
Speaking on the matter, Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Dayal Gangwar, highlighted the significance of this technology in maintaining order and safety of devotees coming from cities, including Bhubaneswar and Konark. Gangwar informed that the AI-powered CCTV cameras are playing a crucial role in assisting with surveillance and security.
"Yesterday, devotees followed the traffic restrictions and traffic regulation plan, and the same will remain in place today. We request everyone to cooperate with us in this... The arrangements made yesterday for devotees coming from Bhubaneswar and Konark will remain the same today... We request everyone to adhere to our restrictions... The AI system is greatly assisting us.", ADG Traffic Dayal Gangwar told ANI on Saturday.
A sea of devotees gathered in Puri on Friday to witness the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, as Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, embarked on the ceremonial journey from the Shri Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. All rituals related to the Rath Yatra are being conducted as per schedule amid heightened security arrangements, with coordinated efforts from multiple security forces and district authorities.
Speaking to ANI about the arrangements, Puri District Magistrate Siddharth Swain said, '...The yatra route is full of devotees. All rituals related to the Rath Yatra will be conducted on time. Police have been deployed since last night. This time, NDRF has also been deployed... Yesterday, we removed illegal 6-7 drones. Flying of drones over Shri Jagannath Temple and the Gundicha temple is not allowed.' A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Puri as a precautionary measure due to the high footfall and scale of the event.
NDRF Deputy Commandant Naveen Rana said, "Our personnel are trained to handle all situations, including any medical emergency, structure collapse or any other. We had conducted four mock drills along with the District Administration here."
The yatra drew lakhs of devotees, many of whom had travelled from different parts of the country and abroad to to witness the grand chariots of the three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra, at the Gundicha temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to Jagannath temple.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended a heartfelt welcome to devotees on the occasion of the annual Rath Yatra, urging them to participate with utmost faith and devotion.In his message, CM Majhi said, 'Join the Rath Yatra with faith and devotion, witness the divine glimpse of Mahaprabhu atop the chariot, and receive His blessings.'

Skeletal remains found from Lohit riverbank suspected to be of Assam dentist
Itanagar: The skeletal remains discovered along the Lohit riverbank in Arunachal Pradesh's Lohit district is suspected to be of Guwahati-based dentist Dr. Debanjib Kumar Sharma, who had gone missing from a riverside resort nearly a month ago. Police said they have collected DNA samples from Dr Sharma's mother and daughter and it will be sent to laboratories in either Guwahati or Kolkata for forensic analysis, sparking hopes of closure for the family. The remains were found on June 23 by local fishermen near Panbari, about 15-20 km from Parshuram Kund. Kumar had disappeared under mysterious circumstances on May 31 after checking into Tulow Resort, situated near the river. 'We've collected DNA samples from Dr Sharma's mother and daughter. They will be sent to laboratories in either Guwahati or Kolkata for forensic analysis,' said Lohit superintendent of police (SP) Thutan Jamba. 'It may take two to three months, but we are pushing for quicker results.' According to police, Sharma was last seen by resort staff around 8 am on the day of his disappearance, reportedly shifting rooms due to landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall. His belongings, including his motorcycle, were found intact—fueling confusion over his sudden disappearance. Rescue teams comprising police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately pressed into service, but no trace was found until last week's grim discovery. Medical experts believe the skeletal remains could be about a month old, which matches the timeline of Sharma's disappearance. Yet, police are keeping all possibilities open. 'Preliminary inputs suggest accidental drowning due to high river levels,' Jamba said. 'However, we are not ruling out foul play.' 'We will continue the investigation based on forensic findings,' the SP added.

"Want security for women": BJP MLA as protests erupt across Kolkata over gangrape case

A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday. Earlier, the police had arrested three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the ACJM of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case. Srinagar Police attaches Rs 50 Lakhs worth property of notorious drug peddler under NDPS Act
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 28 (ANI): In yet another decisive action against the menace of drugs in society and to dismantle the infrastructure supporting illegal narcotics network, Srinagar Police attached a residential property--comprising a two-storeyed house along with land--worth approximately Rs 50 lakhs belonging to a notorious drug peddler namely Bilal Ahmad Wani, under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS ) Act, as per a release. The accused person is involved in the case FIR No. 05/2025 under sections 8/20, 29 of the NDPS Act, registered at Police Station Shaheed Gunj. The said property has been established as having been acquired through the proceeds of illicit drug trafficking. Acting under Sections 68-E and 68-F of the NDPS Act, the immovable property has been formally seized and attached. The said property has been attached as per proper procedure under law. Furthermore, the said property shall not be sold, transferred, or otherwise dealt with without prior permission from the competent authority. The accused person has a history of drug peddling and was actively involved in supplying narcotics, especially targeting the local youth, thereby posing a serious threat to public health and safety. This action is part of the Jammu and Kashmir Police's continued crackdown on drug trafficking networks. By targeting and dismantling the financial infrastructure of such networks, Police aim to curb the spread of narcotics and safeguard the community. Srinagar Police reiterates its unwavering commitment to eradicating drug abuse and appeals to the public for continued support. In another development, the Srinagar Police removed graffiti resembling a foreign flag painted on the road outside the Imambara Zadibal on June 24 and identified three local teenage girls as being involved in the act, according to an official statement. Acting promptly, a police team arrived at the scene and ensured the immediate removal of the Israeli flag to uphold communal harmony and maintain public order. A preliminary enquiry revealed the involvement of three local teenage girls (names withheld due to their age), all students and residents of the area. Given their age and the sensitivity of the incident, their parents were called to the police station, and the minors were counselled in their presence. As per the statement, the girls were made aware of the implications of such actions and were sensitised to the importance of upholding communal harmony and responsible civic behaviour. Legal action will follow, strictly in accordance with the juvenile justice framework. (ANI)
