EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Is godfather of hospitality MasterChef's next judge?

Daily Mail2 days ago
While sacked MasterChef judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode are due to appear in a new series filmed last year, a colourful character is being lined up as a successor.
I hear that restaurateur and hotelier Robert Walton, often called the 'godfather of hospitality', has held talks about joining the crisis-hit BBC cookery series.
Restaurant critic Grace Dent was named as Wallace's successor last December after the former greengrocer stepped down following several historical allegations of inappropriate behaviour made about him.
'Robert is in talks for being appointed the MasterChef judge position with Dent,' a source tells me. 'He is a wild card but the most qualified for the job.
'They like the idea of Robert and Grace together. They are playing around with pairs, and they are looking for credibility. It would make a refreshing change to have someone who is an authority on food and hospitality, who is highly decorated and respected, judging for MasterChef.'
Walton, 69, who is married to Australian fashion designer Donna Ida Thornton, has already received the royal seal of approval, having been awarded an MBE in 2007 by then Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace for services to hospitality.
This week, Walton was honoured again at the House of Lords, where he won the British Icon of Hospitality Award at the Arabreneurs Gala Dinner.
'I'm upset with what's happened to MasterChef and the way everything has come out,' he tells me. 'It's an institution, and it needs to carry on. If someone wants me to do it, I'm super-happy to put my name forward and can get the job done.'
Previously touted to replace Torode were Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt and Andi Oliver, who hosts Great British Menu.
Princess Anne's woes with Wills
Holidays can wait for hard-working Princess Anne, who held yet another investiture on behalf of her brother, King Charles, at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. Around 30 are held each year, at which people who've been awarded an honour receive their gong from the King, 76, Anne, who turns 75 next month, or Prince William, 43, who lives at Windsor.
A 'source close to Anne' was quoted in The Sunday Times as saying: 'She's still doing most of the investitures [at Windsor] even though William lives there. It annoys her.'
Her nephew is currently on holiday abroad with his family.
Pick up after your own pooches, says Lucrezia
SHE is known for her calmness when delivering bulletins, but ITV News presenter Lucrezia Millarini is a pugnacious type off screen.
The Celebrity Mastermind winner, 49, reveals that she confronts fellow dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.
'I have done this a few times,' she tells me at the premiere of the documentary Dogspiracy.
'Cleaning up after your dog is the right and proper thing to do.'
Lucrezia, who has a lhasa apso named Milo, pictured above, says owners who let their dogs leave a mess are 'often aggressive'. She adds: 'It's generally men, they often come back at you with a four-letter word.'
Ozzy Osbourne died at home on Tuesday at the age of 76, 'with his family and surrounded by love'. The Black Sabbath star's daughter, Kelly, told me earlier this month he was happy being back in his native Britain but frustrated to be separated from his animals. 'He loves the house, but he's just waiting for the dogs to get here,' she said. Fortunately, I hear his beloved dogs did arrive before his death. They played a big part in Ozzy's TV series The Osbournes. The star once shared a video of his late pomeranian Rocky 'headbanging' to his song Crazy Train.
Apinall's ex is expecting miracle baby
When I disclosed in 2022 that casino and wildlife park heir Damian Aspinall had separated from his second wife, Victoria, pictured left, friends pointed out that she had always made it clear that she wanted children with him.
Now, she has revealed that it was her struggle to conceive that ended their marriage. And she is pregnant with a 'miracle baby' by an unnamed man.
'I was utterly shocked when I found out I was pregnant earlier this year,' admits the former Burberry executive, 39. 'For seven years, my husband and I fought for this dream: multiple rounds of IVF, miscarriages, and an endless hope that slowly eroded.
'It cost me everything I once loved: my marriage, my home, my career, my sense of self. It took two and a half years to grieve, to rebuild, to finally accept that motherhood might never be part of my story.'
Victoria does not seem to be in a relationship with the father, saying: 'Everything I had dreamed of sharing with someone was no longer my reality. Deciding to keep this baby has been the bravest choice of my life.'
ITV has made much of the danger faced by participants in its much-hyped series, Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters, in which stars including Countdown's Rachel Riley and Call The Midwife actress Helen George swim with the fearsome predators. One of the stars, Sir Lenny Henry, appears, however, to have revealed the truth about the 'reality' programme. 'We survived,' says the actor and comedian, 66. 'I was aware that ITV don't want anybody of a celebrity nature to be eaten on television.'

Tipton singer encourages emerging artists to follow dreams at festival

A singer has encouraged emerging artists to never give up on their dreams, after performing at a Birmingham festival. Czafari, also known as Czarena Brown, started writing music about nine years ago so she could share her love for storytelling with the world. The 26-year-old from Tipton performed at Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival in July, which was a milestone she "couldn't believe" after DJing at the event in 2021."I remember soaking up the vibes four years ago and thinking, 'I need to be on one of those stages'," she said. Reminiscing about the festival, Czafari said performing on the second stage made her feel "absolutely incredible" and glad that she "kept going" as an independent artist."There's been so many times where I felt like I wanted to give up because it was really slow, I wasn't getting many gig opportunities, and I didn't have the confidence to release music," she said. "I'm really grateful to have this experience and I haven't quit, I'm still going." Czafari said she has had a love for music since she was very young, when she competed in talent competitions and sang at her grandparent's gospel choir."I was probably one of the youngest in the choir but I had a voice so I had to sing," she artist described the performances as "very daunting at the time" but singing has "always been in her bones" and has given her the confidence she has now."Singing has always filled me with joy and as I've got older I've noticed when I sing, my endorphin levels increase and I am happy and more connected to myself," she said. Looking at pictures over the years, it's clear to see that Czafari was not afraid to put on a performance - even at the age of a pink tiara, she sang to her family on Christmas Day with the new guitar, microphone and amp she had received that morning."My parents basically affirmed my passion for music, it made me feel really seen," she said. Czafari released her first EP at the age of 17 and performed at her first event at The Night Owl in Digbeth, Birmingham. Since then, she has produced a second EP and her songs have featured on BBC Glastonbury Festival isn't returning until 2027, performing at Worthy Farm is a milestone she wants to tick off her bucket list. "I watch the performances back and I need to be there. To have that aspiration may sound really big but it's something I want to do, so I'm going to do it," she said. ‘That cliffhanger was evil!' 7 amazing shows fans vow were cancelled too early

TV shows being cancelled left, right, and centre feels like an all-too regular occurrence nowadays. However, just because an exhilarating thriller or a world-bending sci-fi series might have been axed before it could have a satisfying ending, that doesn't mean we can't still appreciate them years later. Metro readers have shared their favourite shows that they feel should have had at least one more season – and their answers are bursting with passion. From a beloved Netflix zombie comedy to a BBC historical drama, these are programmes that not only were cherished by their audiences but have also stood the test of time. Of course, we at Metro also shared our favourite TV picks that ended way too early below, which we can't help but still be extremely sour about. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. If you want to join the discussion, you can do so on our Facebook page – otherwise, read on to discover the seven shows chosen by our readers that deserved better. When TV fans discuss shows that were ended abruptly but deserved to be on air for longer, Firefly is frequently mentioned. 'Firefly deserved 10 more seasons,' Metro reader Nazni Ali remarked. The space Western drama starring Nathan Fillion as Serenity captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds originally premiered in 2002, and only aired for one season. Yet its legacy has lived on for over two decades. One fan called Lee Luntley said that while they'd 'love' to see more Firefly in future, 'if it doesn't capture the same magic as before then it's a bad move'. Firefly is available to stream on Disney Plus. The passion for Santa Clarita Diet cannot be overstated. Starring Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore, the show follows a couple whose lives are turned upside down when it emerges that Sheila (Drew) is showing signs of becoming a zombie, and therefore develops a bloodthirsty appetite. The show – which has been described as 'brilliant', 'weird' and 'genius' in equal measure – abruptly ended after just three seasons, and fans are still bitter about it. 'At least Firefly got a film as an ending, Santa Clarita Diet deserves the same,' Metro reader Paul Ingra quipped, while Heather Louise McDonald added: 'Santa Clarita Diet deserves more than it got.' Santa Clarita Diet is available to stream on Netflix. 'Save the cheerleader, save the world.' Those six simple words captured audiences around the world when Heroes premiered almost 20 years ago, in 2006. The first season boasted an average of 14 million viewers, and it's still regarded as top-tier television. There have been attempts to revive Heroes following its initial 2010 cancellation. In 2015, a spin-off series called Heroes Reborn was released, and it's been claimed that another titled Heroes: Eclipsed is in development. Nonetheless, fans, including Jimi O'Doherty, wish there had been at least one more season of the original series. 'Wish they did volume 5 Brave New World,' they wrote. Heroes is available to buy on Prime Video. Metro's TV Editor Sabrina Barr shares the shows that she's personally gutted were axed before their time. Agent Carter It's been almost a decade, and I'm still heartbroken that Agent Carter was brushed to one side after just two seasons. As a Marvel superfan, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) instantly became one of my favourite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she made her debut in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. Following the presumed death of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Peggy is heartbroken, but jumps into action – and that's where Agent Carter picks up. It was a brilliant continuation of her story, and it's gutting that it was cut short. Agent Carter is available to stream on Disney Plus. 1899 I still haven't had a chance to watch Netflix's thriller series Dark yet. However, I did manage to catch 1899, a drama made by the same creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, and it blew my mind to smithereens. At first, it seemed as though it was just going to be a chilling period drama set on an eerie ship. But there is so much more to it than that… and I'm wary of revealing too much for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. All I'll say is – if you enjoy a psychological thriller, period dramas, sci-fis, a brilliant ensemble cast where characters from different countries who might have never met cross paths, then you're in for a treat. 1899 is available to stream on Netflix. Glow I'm a sucker for stories set in the 80s, and I love a fantastic female-led ensemble cast. So the minute I saw a glimpse of Glow, I knew that it'd be right up my street. I'll profess – I didn't know much about wrestling beforehand, and I'm still nowhere near an expert. But learning about the 'Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling' gave me a stronger appreciation for the sport, and made me want to find out more. It's such a shame that Glow was cancelled due to Covid, and that it couldn't be resuscitated. I will continue to hold it hope that even six years later, it could have legs in the future. Glow is available to stream on Netflix. Shadow and Bone As a devout fantasy fan, Shadow and Bone mesmerised every ounce of me. I haven't read the books (they're on my To Be Read list), but I had every faith in the show, and I wasn't left disappointed. The disappointment did come, however, when Netflix confirmed that season two would be its last, despite ending on a huge cliffhanger. What's more, this meant that the previously announced spin-off Six of Crows was also no longer going forward. If you've ever stumbled upon a Netflix post on Instagram and wondered why so many people are urging the streaming site to save Shadow and Bone, give it a watch and discover for yourself. Shadow and Bone is available to stream on Netflix. The Last Kingdom is an exception on this list, as the story did conclude in a feature-length film titled The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which was released on Netflix in 2023. However, for some fans, that didn't suffice. 'Would have preferred another series rather than Seven Kings Must Die,' Metro reader Michael Webb quipped about the show. The historical drama originally premiered on BBC Two in 2015, before moving to Netflix for its final three seasons. The Last Kingdom is available to stream on Netflix. Lockwood and Co. had a lot of promise. So much so that one of the lead actors, Ruby Stokes, stepped away from her role on Bridgerton to commit to the project. Despite the acclaim it received from critics and fans alike, the supernatural detective series was cancelled after just one season. 'Netflix couldn't even explain their decision with any conviction 'It was one of our top-rated shows ever, but the decision was made to not greenlight season two and concentrate on making new quality content',' Kirsty Sparkman fumed while speculating over the thought process behind the decision.. Macy Macleod added that they've 'never forgiven' those who decided Lockwood and Co. would be axed. Lockwood and Co. is available to stream on Netflix. Pushing Daisies is another TV show that fans will often bring up as an example of a series that not only was cancelled too soon, but also deserves a comeback. Starring Lee Pace, Anna Friel and Kristin Chenoweth among the stacked cast, the comedy-drama is about a pie-maker called Ned (Lee) who has the ability to bring dead things back to life, and uses the unusual skill to solve murder cases. The ending of the show was altered when the creators knew that it was being cancelled, to try and provide fans with a satisfying ending. But several people admitted that they felt as though it was rushed. 'Pushing Daisies, that cliffhanger was evil!' Vicky Cosgrove wrote in frustration. Pushing Daisies is available to buy on Prime Video. There are a plethora of sci-fi shows to choose from when you're looking for a new programme to binge on streaming, but one that stands out among fans is Dark Matter. More Trending Not to be mixed up with the series of the same name that premiered on Apple TV Plus last year, the 2015 space-based drama Dark Matter lasted for three seasons. 'Dark Matter deserved season four on Syfy. Syfy cancelled it after three seasons, even though season three was the build-up for season four. Stupid,' a Metro reader going by the name SaveHolbycity David stated. Dee Lever-Johns listed Dark Matter among a list of other sci-fi and fantasy shows that have had premature ends, including Killjoys, Shadow and Bone, Warrior Nun and Lockwood and Co., adding: 'Yet they keep some total rubbish on TV.' 'People come to Shropshire petal field with outfit changes'

Stretching across a large field in Newport with bees and butterflies zipping through the air, Shropshire Petal Fields boasts rows and rows of delphiniums, cornflowers, sunflowers and is open a week earlier due to an unusually dry spring, and is hoping to welcome more than 16,000 people across the 10 days it is vibrant colours, abundance of wildlife and the installation of photo opportunities - including a claw-foot bathtub - means people flock to the site to take pictures for social media."You see people come with three outfit changes and the kids are bribed with ice cream all the way round to get the family pictures," said Beth Heath from Shropshire Festivals. "We've had a lot of people taking professional pictures, we've had a few proposals."We're all about memories… this makes loads of people smile, and also take a moment." The flowers remain picture perfect because their maintenance does not involve much human interaction - all the planting and weeding is done by a Heath said people travelled to visit the site, drawing in a lot of people particularly from near Wolverhampton who did not get to experience the countryside as often."There is something very special about standing amongst those colours, that smell and being completely immersed in nature," she said. "We loved walking around the flowers and all the props that you could stop and take photos at," said Emily from Shrewsbury, who had visited with her family."We're entertaining the children… we're getting great shots of everybody and the flowers so it will definitely be going on social media later."It's quite a big factor because you're collecting lovely memories, but it's quite tricky getting them to smile on cue," she site offers events catered towards different people - there are dog-friendly days and sunset evenings, as well as picnic opportunities, all of which have Insta-worthy photo opportunities. "It's lovely and the photos are just stunning that you're able to take," said Louise, who lives two miles away."It's nice to come and see so many little ones here, and there's so much wildlife to see on the flowers, all the bees and the butterflies."Meanwhile, Brian and Diane Richards told the BBC they could not believe the location was so close to home."The first time we'd seen pictures but couldn't think where it could be," said Ms Richards."It's hard to believe that's all going to be petals for somebody's wedding at some point," Mr Richards added.
