Germany U21s accused of theft by ‘distraught' woman before England final
Germany's Under-21 side have had no issues on the pitch during this summer's issues but were faced with an unexpected confrontation after cruising into the final
Germany's Under-21 team are due to take on England in Saturday's European Championships final, but their preparations have been disturbed by accusations of stealing beer glasses. The players were confronted by a "distraught" woman over the alleged theft, it has been claimed.
The allegations relate to events after the team's semi-final against France in Kosice. Antonio Di Salvo's squad have denied theft, claiming instead that the glasses must have been removed without their knowledge.
According to Bild (via The Sun), the woman - understood to be a VIP host at the Kosicka Futbalova Arena - was in tears as she stormed Germany's team coach. She is reported to have ignored the attention of stewards and an armed security guard in order to approach the vehicle and attempt to take photos,
'It was all completely different. The woman had brought several beer mugs into the catacombs, presumably for the referees. Then later, empty mugs were there, which were suddenly gone," said the Germany Under-21 press officer, who happens to be named Markus Beer.
'Someone must have thrown them away. She obviously thought our players had simply taken them. But that was definitely not the case.'
Germany go into this year's final after winning every single one of their matches so far. They beat England 2-1 in the group stages, before needing extra-time to see off Italy in the quarter-finals.
They found things much easier in the semis, going 2-0 up against France inside the opening 15 minutes as Nelson Wieper and Nick Woltemade found the net. Brighton youngster Brajan Gruda rounded off the scoring in second half stoppage-time to complete a handsome victory.
England haven't found things quite as straightforward, but powered through despite only taking four points from their three group games. They beat Spain in the quarters in a repeat of the 2023 final, while a pair of Harvey Elliott goals were enough for a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the semis.
"You can speak as much as you want on the pitch, you can say whatever, but at the end of the day when the moment comes and you need to show up, and you need to, for example, in my situation, score a goal," Elliott said after his match-winning brace, pointing to big goals from his Liverpool colleagues Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk during the Reds' title win.
"It's about how you take that, and those opportunities are vital. Today I'm just so happy I was able to contribute and get the two goals to win us the game."

Now a £55million transfer agreement has been struck between Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, the 20-year-old winger will be tasked with replacing his compatriot and former team-mate at Stamford Bridge. Gittens, who flourished within boyhood club Reading's academy setup before later moving to Manchester City, has already verbally agreed a seven-year contract with the Blues. Ex-England U19 head coach Ian Foster is under no illusions that Enzo Maresca's Conference League winners would be acquiring an attacking gem, explaining: "It's no surprise to see that a club the size of Chelsea are in for Jamie. "He was a quiet boy but a joy to work with, really humble, open-minded and always up for the challenge. Jamie is a player that would never get disheartened if he wasn't getting success. "He's going to be up against some of the world's best full-backs in the Premier League next season and if he's having a tough time, he won't go missing. In fact, it will have the reverse effect, it will actually excite him. "I think he'd be a wonderful addition to the Premier League, he's got a vast amount of technical ability, skill plus the mindset to continue achieving great things." Gittens, who previously had a very brief spell with Chelsea's U9s, was part of Foster's young Three Lions side that won the U19 European Championships in 2022. The triumph did not come without struggle for the silky dribbler, however, in the view of Foster, the experience was living proof that fearless speedster Gittens possessed the tools to succeed at the highest level. He revealed: "I was aware of Jamie from a young age, he was a Reading boy before the big move to City. When he made the brave decision to join Dortmund, he almost looked to follow in the footsteps of Jadon and that showed what type of character he is. "It was clear he had huge self-belief, I went to Germany to watch Jamie as he wasn't part of the squad until the finals because he was a 2004-born player. "I still remember his first training session vividly, sometimes the best reaction you can get is from your peers. The lads were almost laughing at his ability to glide past defenders, his calmness in the final third and level-headedness in hectic situations. "But Jamie had issues with his shoulders, he suffered a dislocation in training and later came off the bench against Italy in the semi-finals as it popped out again following a strong tackle. "I was so desperate for him to play and thankfully, he could start the final before undergoing surgery which has now fixed the problem." Gittens, who became the youngest English goalscorer to net against Real Madrid last October in the Champions League, has played just 13 minutes at the Club World Cup as Chelsea hone in on a transfer. While there is an element of frustration that the big-spending Blues were unable to strike a deal before the start of the tournament, there was always confidence they would be able to fend off strong late interest from Bayern Munich. Foster insists it's a major shame that Gittens, who also snubbed Arsenal when leaving home for City in 2018, was unable to feature for England U21s at the European Championships as he would have undoubtedly had a key role to play on the pathway to glory in Slovakia. He concluded: "It would have been a great opportunity for Jamie but he's already got a wealth of experience in Germany and in the Champions League. Carsley reveals why England U21 celebrations were low key - 'Couple of shandies'

Marseille striker Jonathan Rowe came off the bench to head home an extra-time winner with his first touch as Carsley's boys became men against the old enemy. Carsley sank to his knees at the final whistle after emulating Dave Sexton, the coach who won back-to-back European titles in the early 1980s. Carsley said: 'All the credit goes to the players. I'm really proud of them and the commitment they have shown. They have so much belief. This squad believes that they can win. 'To be European champions for the second time is a great achievement, and the challenge is to do it again in two years. Any setback that we have had, the players have got together. 'I didn't think we played great tonight. We sat too deep and didn't have as much control as I wanted. But we won't remember that!' There have already been calls for Carsley to be knighted for the role he has played in helping to develop the country's top talent. Asked if there is a chance that he may return to the senior fold to assist Thomas Tuchel, he added: 'I'm not sure. I'm going to try to enjoy tonight. Gemma Collins left 'terrified' after being sent 'rat poison' to her Essex home
Gemma Collins was left terrified after a hate mail reportedly parcel containing rat poison was sent to her home recently - it comes just weeks after she called 999 after receiving hate letters Reality TV star Gemma Collins has reportedly upped security at her Essex home after a package containing "rat poision" was sent to her home. The 44-year-old, who lives with businessman fiancé Rami Hawash, is believed to have invested in 24-hour guard dog patrols and alerted Essex Police after the arrival of the package, which also contained a nasty letter. It comes just a couple of weeks after the Celebrity Big Brother icon was left 'shaken and very scared for her safety' after receiving a hateful letter from a man who wrote about his extreme dislike for her. It seems the escalation of hate mail, from a letter to "rat poision", has left Gemma "terrified" and fearful for her beloved pets who live with her in her stunning countryside home. A source close to Gemma told The Sun: 'The latest delivery was really scary for Gemma and she was genuinely terrified. It was delivered by the postman, but it had no postage stamp on it. "Gemma was worried because it contained rat poison, especially as she has animals at her home. She was already liaising with police over her earlier hate letter. "It was from a man who expressed his extreme dislike for her and used menacing language. The police have been fantastic and have some new leads. Gemma's trying not to let it get to her and is doing her best to focus on summer projects.' Sadly, it's not the first time the star has had a brush with the dark side of fame. She told a podcast in May that she has had several stalkers over the years, who had threatened her and sent 'terrifying' letters to her boutique in Brentwood. She said it 'played havoc on her mind' and was the reason she moved away from front-of-house work at the boutique. ' No one would believe the b****y crap I've had to deal with,' she confessed. 'I've had a woman stalker who wrote me a letter in white gloves and wanted to kill me. People would wish me dead. "I'd get all sorts at the shop. People are weird. And that's why I came away from my shop.' And, in 2019, it was revealed that Gemma had called the police after being targeted by a stalker – a man who she claimed had previously verbally abused her outside her home over six days. The experience was so traumatic that it made her question if she could stay in Essex. The Mirror has reached out to Gemma's representatives and Essex Police for comment.
