Chappell Roan's New Single Instantly Hits No. 1

Chappell Roan's New Single Instantly Hits No. 1

Forbes2 days ago
Chappell Roan has a history of performing songs and teasing them to her massive fanbase for months, if not years, before they are properly released. It's a strategy that has worked for her in the past, and she's stuck with it. To promote her brand new cut 'The Subway,' she leaned into this approach once again, much to the delight of her diehard followers.
Fans of the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter are already familiar with the tune, but the rest of the world is just now waking up to the latest single from the current holder of the Best New Artist Grammy. Anticipation was clearly extremely high, as 'The Subway' is already a bestselling smash.
'The Subway' Leads New Releases on iTunes
Friday (August 1) marks the beginning of a new tracking week in the music industry, and 'The Subway' is the most exciting release this frame. Roan dominates iTunes rankings in a number of countries, including the United States, where 'The Subway' rides the rails all the way to No. 1.
Demi Lovato, Forrest Frank and Zach Top
At the time of writing, Roan scores one of only two new arrivals inside the top 10 on the iTunes Top Songs chart in the U.S. 'Chevy Silverado' by Bailey Zimmerman opens at No. 4, while new cuts from musicians like Zach Top, Forrest Frank, Russell Dickerson, and Demi Lovato sit just a few spaces beneath the highest tier. Any, or all, of those songs could climb into the top 10 in the coming hours or days.
A Fan Favorite Finally Gets Released
Roan has been performing 'The Subway' for more than a year now, and she played it at several high-profile events, including the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City. Many fans had demanded a studio version of the tune, and Roan eventually acquiesced. According to more than one interview, the singer felt that 'The Subway' actually works better live, so she had some hesitation when it came to sharing it as a proper single.
What Comes Next for Chappell Roan?
'The Subway' marks Roan's second new single of 2025. Back in March, she delivered 'The Giver,' another track she'd performed live well before officially releasing it. That tune brought Roan back to the top 10 on the Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 5.
'The Subway' joins both 'The Giver' and 'Good Luck, Babe!' as standalone tunes, as none of them have been formally connected to an upcoming full-length. There is a good chance all three will be featured on Roan's highly-anticipated sophomore album, though there's no date for such a project just yet.

Review: Doechii delivers a hip hop master class at Lollapalooza

No one is having a better year than Doechii. The Florida rapper, 'The Swamp Rula,' released her critically-acclaimed mixtape 'Alligator Bites Never Heal' in August 2024 and hasn't hit the brakes since, taking home the Grammy for best rap album — only the second woman to do so— as well as gracing runways in New York and Paris and putting on some of the most dynamic live performances on and off screen. Bringing us to her Saturday night Lollapalooza set on the T-Mobile stage. With respect to Rüfüs Du Sol, Doechii should've headlined. Welcoming thousands to Doechii's School of Hip Hop, complete with a giant, funhouse-style boombox center stage, she rapped, writhed, and twerked circles around a troupe of dancers (delivering choreography that would make the great, ballroom pioneer Willi Ninja proud) and delivered lessons in bars, flow, genre, scratching and word play for just under an hour. Teasing her own headlining 'Live From the Swamp Tour' by the end, she left everyone wanting more. Doechii is one of a kind. With a looming, unbodied voice ringing out to encourage her ascent throughout her performance, Doechii, grounded by DJ Miss Milan, wielded the power of mania, tension, drama, and queer joy like a spear, piercing any posturing or pretension to free herself and her onstage classmates/dancers from the tyranny of self-doubt and limitations. One of the most versatile vocalists in today's mainstream, she oscillated seamlessly from growled, ruthless rhyme ('Nissan Altima,' 'Nosebleeds,' 'Catfish') and full-throated screams to smooth melodies and big crescendos, like on 'Anxiety.' For the house-flecked 'Alter Ego' — during which she referenced her infamous Met Gala 'umbrella incident' during her outfit change — she welcomed former City Girl member JT to the stage after hinting at a special guest in the days leading up to her Lolla debut. Both women were beaming from the big screens and the fields of the south end of Grant Park were awash in flailing hands and fans snapping in the air. Black girl magic, indeed. With her signature extra-long braids and head-to-toe DSquared2 custom outfits, Doechii covered every inch of that stage bathed in adulation. Classic hip hop and pop samples were woven into interludes throughout her set, including 'Pull Over' by Trina, Doug E. Fresh's 'La Di Da Di' and Beyonce's 'America Has a Problem.' Before delivering her megahit 'Denial is a River,' the unbodied voice — taking a kinder tone— spoke about how every master of something starts as a student. That the importance and interconnection of studying and honoring what you're choosing to dedicate yourself to is just as important as the final result. Then she appeared again. An icon born — the self-proclaimed 'hip hop Madonna,' 'trap Grace Jones,' making all the hard work look effortless, and so damn fun.

Nintendo raises the Switch 1 price from $299 to $339

The original Nintendo Switch, which has cost $299.99 in the US since its release in 2017, is now priced at $339.99 on Nintendo's online store. Other first-gen Switch models are now more expensive, too, with the Switch OLED going from $349.99 to $399.99, and the Switch Lite increasing from $199.99 to $229.99. Nintendo said on Friday that its decision to raise the price was 'based on market conditions,' just after implementing a similar new set of prices in Canada on August 1st. The US announcement came just one day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that will impose new 'reciprocal' tariffs on a range of countries. Trump's growing list of tariffs now includes a 20 percent levy on products imported from Vietnam, where Nintendo has transferred most of its production. Nintendo also issued $10 price increases for the Alarmo and Switch 1 Joy-Cons, which now cost $109.99 and $89.99, respectively. Prices aren't changing for the Switch 2 console, as well as Switch and Switch 2 games, whether physical or digital. With the price increase, the Switch OLED is now only slightly less expensive than the $449.99 Switch 2 (which doesn't have an OLED display). The Switch 2 has been a massive hit so far, selling over 6 million units since launch despite Nintendo struggling to keep up with demand. The Boy and The Beast Returns to Theaters — GeekTyrant

Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment want to give anime film fans a treat. For one day only, on August 18, fans will be able to watch Mamoru Hosoda's The Boy and The Beast in select theaters in the United States. It will be the subtitled version (Japanese audio, English subtitles) and it sounds like fun. I missed it when the film originally debuted in 2015/2016, but the trailer looks quite good. A must-watch film from the acclaimed creator of Summer Wars, Wolf Children, Belle, and the upcoming film Scarlet, Mamoru Hosoda's The Boy and The Beast follows Kyuta, a young orphan living on the streets of Shibuya, who stumbles into a fantastic world of beasts, and taken in by Kumatetsu, a gruff, rough-around-the-edges warrior beast who's been searching for the perfect apprentice. Did you catch The Boy and The Beast the first time it came to theaters or will you be crossing it off your backlog this August? Tickets are on sale now via Fandango.
