Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey Unveils 'Bitchat' Bluetooth-Based Messaging App

Taarek Refaat Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter (now X), has launched a new decentralized messaging app called Bitchat, which allows users to communicate via Bluetooth without requiring internet or cellular networks. The app leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and mesh networking technology to create device-to-device encrypted communication, enabling messages to hop between nearby users even in the absence of central infrastructure. 'Bitchat addresses the need for private, resilient communication that doesn't depend on centralized systems,' Dorsey wrote in a post on GitHub, where the open-source foundation of the project is being hosted. Unlike traditional messaging apps, Bitchat requires no user accounts, no phone numbers, and no cloud servers. It is designed for offline peer-to-peer messaging within a 300-meter range, significantly more than similar apps like Bridgefy, which typically max out at around 100 meters. Using mesh networking, Bitchat allows messages to be relayed through multiple devices, extending communication far beyond the typical Bluetooth range. It also offers advanced privacy features, including: The app is currently available in beta testing via Apple's TestFlight platform, but the testing limit of 10,000 users has already been reached. Dorsey noted that the app is undergoing review in preparation for a broader public release. The launch comes amid increasing global interest in decentralized communication tools, especially in regions facing internet shutdowns, surveillance, or censorship. Similar tools like Bridgefy and Briar have gained popularity among protest movements and users seeking secure, anonymous messaging. Bitchat builds on these concepts but aims to provide greater range, improved reliability, and no compromise on privacy. Future updates may include support for Wi-Fi Direct, allowing for even faster and longer-range communication without central infrastructure. Dorsey has long advocated for open protocols and decentralization. His new app aligns with that philosophy, offering users a way to communicate completely outside the control of governments, corporations, or internet providers. 'This is not just about messaging. It's about digital sovereignty,' Dorsey said in his GitHub post. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Electricity Min. Turns to Cash Payments After Ramses Telecom Fire Disrupts Prepaid Meters

Taarek Refaat In the wake of the Ramses Central Telecommunications Center fire, Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has announced emergency measures to ensure continued access to prepaid electricity meter services, which were partially disrupted due to the outage of internet and telecom systems. According to senior ministry officials, the fire caused a temporary shutdown of backend systems linked to telecom providers, affecting electronic recharging and online payment capabilities for electricity meters across several regions. Emergency Protocols Activated In response, the Ministry has begun encouraging customers to use cash payments at authorized points of sale and has coordinated with "Fawry", a leading e-payment platform, to extend working hours and enhance service availability for prepaid meter users. 'The disruption was not widespread, but it did impact a number of customers who rely on mobile apps or online platforms for meter top-ups,' a ministry source said. 'We have deployed technical teams to receive complaints and offer immediate solutions where possible.' Ministry Deploys Response Teams The Ministry confirmed that emergency response teams have been dispatched across governorates to handle customer complaints and ensure the continuity of services. Additional staff have been placed on call, and operating hours have been extended at several electricity distribution branches. Meanwhile, electricity supply across the country remains stable, with no reported outages resulting from the telecom incident. Digital Dependency Exposed The fire at the Ramses Central exchange has exposed a critical dependency on digital infrastructure, especially for sectors like utilities that have increasingly adopted smart systems and e-payments. Analysts warn that redundant systems and offline backup solutions are necessary to avoid paralyzing public services during unexpected digital failures. Looking Ahead The Ministry of Electricity is currently working with telecom providers to restore full digital functionality and is reviewing its digital resilience plans in light of the incident. Customers are advised to use in-person or cash-based recharging options temporarily until full services are restored. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Egypt's Mobile Operators Reroute Network Traffic After Ramses Central Office Fire

Taarek Refaat Egypt's three major mobile network operators — Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and Etisalat by e& Egypt — have begun rerouting their network traffic to alternative switching centers across the country following a fire that broke out early Wednesday at the Ramses Central Office in downtown Cairo. The fire, which disrupted core telecommunications infrastructure, prompted an immediate emergency response from telecom providers to safeguard service continuity. Key alternative hubs currently handling redirected traffic include El Obour and El Hosary switching centers, among others. Rapid Network Reconfiguration Sources within the telecom sector confirmed to The Journal that the operators activated contingency plans designed for critical outages. These measures involve the technical redistribution of voice call routing and data services (network traffic) to backup facilities to prevent widespread service degradation. 'The network load has been successfully distributed across other central exchanges with minimal impact on end users,' said a senior telecom engineer involved in the process, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak publicly. 'The goal is to maintain stability while the damaged facility is being assessed and repaired.' Fire Contained, Investigations Underway Civil defense teams were able to contain the fire without reported injuries. Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, but a formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause. While full damage assessments are ongoing, officials from Telecom Egypt, which owns and operates the national fixed-line infrastructure including the Ramses exchange, are cooperating with mobile operators to restore full capacity. Service Impact and User Experience Although no official service outage was announced, some users across Greater Cairo reported temporary disruptions in call quality and slower data speeds during the morning hours. Operators have since reassured customers that services are being restored to normal through their contingency infrastructure. Industry analysts say the incident highlights the importance of resilient digital infrastructure and the role of redundancy planning in telecom networks. 'This fire could have had a much more significant impact if not for the quick response and routing flexibility built into Egypt's telecom backbone,' one analyst noted. Looking Ahead Authorities are expected to issue a formal report on the incident in the coming days. Meanwhile, restoration efforts at the Ramses Central Office are underway, with full repairs likely to take several weeks depending on the extent of the damage. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean
