On the first day of the Monsoon Session, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day amid noisy protests by the Opposition, which demanded a discussion on Operation Sindoor and other issues. This was the fourth adjournment on the first day of the month-long Monsoon session.
The Opposition raised slogans in the House over its demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, under which Indian armed forces carried out attacks on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said he was ready to allow the members to raise all issues, including Operation Sindoor, after Question Hour - the first hour of the day when members raise questions related to different ministries and departments.
The government has allocated 16 hours for a debate on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha and nine hours in the Rajya Sabha. The Income Tax Amendment Bill will be discussed for 12 hours in the Lok Sabha.
Meanwhile, impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma were set in motion after 152 MPs submitted a signed memorandum to Speaker Birla on Monday. The High Court judge is facing removal over allegations of misconduct following the discovery of unaccounted cash at his residence.
The motion, filed under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution, garnered support from lawmakers across party lines, including the BJP, Congress, TDP, JDU, CPM, and others. Signatories include MPs Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Supriya Sule, KC Venugopal, and PP Chaudhary.
In the Upper House, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said he received a motion seeking Justice Varma's removal, signed by over 50 Rajya Sabha MPs. Since 152 Lok Sabha MPs submitted a similar notice, he directed the secretary-general to take necessary steps to move the impeachment process forward.
The Constitution mandates that the removal of a Supreme Court or High Court judge must follow a Presidential order, preceded by a motion signed by at least 100 Lok Sabha or 50 Rajya Sabha MPs. The Speaker or Chairman decides whether to admit the motion.
Allegations of misconduct against Justice Varma arose after a large number of charred currency notes were recovered from his official residence in Delhi following a fire on March 15. With the submission of the impeachment motion, Parliament will now investigate the matter.
The judge has denied any wrongdoing. However, a Supreme Court-appointed three-member inquiry panel found that he and his family had active control over the storeroom where the burnt currency was discovered. The panel concluded that the misconduct was grave enough to warrant his removal.

Indonesia condemns Israeli motion to annex the occupied West Bank
Jakarta, Jul 24 (AP) Indonesia has strongly condemned the Israeli Parliament's symbolic motion to annex the occupied West Bank. In a statement Thursday by Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, reiterated that Israel has no legitimate sovereignty over occupied Palestinian territory and that such actions do not alter the legal status of the territory. 'This move constitutes an act of annexation, violating the fundamental principle of non-acquisition of territory by force," the statement said. 'We reaffirm our support for the establishment and sovereign State of Palestine within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Two-State Solution." The declarative motion, passed Wednesday by the Israeli Parliament, or Knesset, has no direct legal implications, although it could place the issue of annexation on the agenda of future debates. The Southeast Asian nation urged the United Nations Security Council and the international community to take concrete measures to halt what it termed Israel's illegal actions, saying it aims to make its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory permanent. Justice Yashwant Varma impeachment: Speaker Om Birla to announce inquiry panel to probe charges, says report
High court judge Yashwant Varma (File Photo) NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is expected to announce the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to examine charges against Allahabad high court Judge Yashwant Varma, news agency PTI reported on Thursday quoting official sources. The move follows the submission of a notice signed by 152 Members of Parliament on July 21, calling for a probe into the grounds for Justice Varma's potential removal. The notice, now deemed the "property of the House," has triggered formal consultations to establish a three-member inquiry panel. According to the Judges (Inquiry) Act, such a committee must include either the Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court judge, a Chief Justice of a high court, and a distinguished jurist. Sources confirmed that consultations are already underway, with Speaker Birla expected to write to the Chief Justice of India to recommend two of the committee members. The choice of the jurist, however, will rest solely with the Speaker. The Rajya Sabha is also involved in the process, as a similar notice signed by 63 opposition MPs was submitted to the Upper House on the same day. Consequently, coordination between both Houses has become crucial to the next steps. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canada is Open for Professionals Seeking Relocation PR Canadiense Sign Up Undo Since the submission of the notices, senior leaders including home minister Amit Shah, Rajya Sabha leader of the house JP Nadda, Speaker Birla, and deputy Chairman Harivansh, who is currently presiding over the Upper House following Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation, have been in intense deliberations over the path ahead. Dhankhar, who had invoked the Judges (Inquiry) Act in the Rajya Sabha on Monday to clarify procedure, later resigned in a surprise move, citing health concerns. However, political observers believe his resignation followed discontent within the government over his decision to acknowledge the opposition-backed notice despite a bipartisan one already before the Lok Sabha. With Harivansh now temporarily in charge, the fate of the Rajya Sabha notice remains uncertain. 'We have not been told anything so far,' said an opposition MP who signed the notice. As per the Act, the three-member committee will examine the grounds for seeking the judge's removal and determine whether the charges warrant further action.

Sarvarkar Defamation Case: Rahul Gandhi Granted Bail, Pleads Not Guilty
Mumbai: A court in Maharashtra's Nashik city on Thursday granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed against him for remarks about Hindutva ideologue and freedom fighter V D Savarkar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022. Appearing through video link before additional chief judicial magistrate R C Narwadia, RahulGandhi, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, pleaded 'not guilty'. Nashik-resident Devendra Bhutada, through his lawyer Manoj Pingle, has filed the criminal defamation case under sections 500 (defamation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code. After RahulGandhi pleaded not guilty, his lawyers sought bail. The court allowed the plea on a bond of Rs 15,000, said advocate Pingle. The complainant, director of an NGO, alleged that Gandhi, at a press conference in Hingoli and in a speech during his yatra in November 2022, made statements that harmed Savarkar's reputation. "The speech of the accused along with press statements try to ruin the reputation of the complainant's idol Swatantryaveer Savarkar and his contribution to the society along with his noble work in the pre-independence period," the complaint said. Gandhi said that "Savarkar prayed for release with folded hands and later on promised to work for the British government", it alleged. Gandhi is also facing a defamation case in Pune, filed by Savarkar's grandnephew, over his statements about the late Hindutva ideologue.
