The New York Yankees dropped their series against the first-place Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday and the need for some upgrades at the trade deadline is glaring.
The team is focused on returning to the World Series this season but faces potential shortages in starting pitching depth, the bullpen and the infield. And as the front office seeks some veteran talent to bring in, any number of prospects could be on the move.
Ultimately, that might include Cam Schlittler, the team's third-ranked prospect who has raised his potential trade value with a pair of strong starts in the big leagues this season.
"He's dominant, man," Yankees' infielder Jazz Chilsholm Jr. said of Schlittler after his latest start, according to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.

With an intense demeanor and a high-octane fastball, Schlittler could be an answer for the Yankees' rotation the rest of the way. Or he could be flipped to bring in some help for another area.
As the trade deadline approaches, Schlittler spoke out about potentially being dealt and whether that has impacted his approach on the mound.
"Obviously, you know, it's there, but at the end of the day, I'm still a Yankee and trying to be a Yankee," Schlittler told Phillips. "It's not something I can worry about right now. So I just gotta block it out and keep trying to do my job day-to-day."
So far, Schlittler has been able to do that, with a 4.35 ERA in two starts. As the Yankees remain without Luis Gil, he could stick in the rotation for the time being. But among the Yankees' starters, Schlittler seems like the odd man out when Gil does return or in a potential trade.

Dodgers Predicted To Bring Top AL Central Fireballer To Los Angeles

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been awfully quiet so far ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. Granted, the same can be said of a lot of teams. Major League Baseball's expanded playoff format has pushed most of the trade action right back until the deadline. The Dodgers know they're buying, but they have to figure out who's selling. One team still up in the air is the Minnesota Twins, who entered Monday with a record of 50-55. It would seem they're trending toward selling, and that could be a huge win for the Dodgers. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - APRIL 09: A view of a Los Angeles Dodgers hat in the eighth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on April 09, 2024 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Dodgers defeated the Twins 6-3. MoreFireballing Twins closer Jhoan Durán could be the bullpen prize of the trade deadline if he's dealt. And the Dodgers could use another option to close out games, so Durán would be extremely appealing. On Sunday, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicted that the Dodgers would bring Durán to Los Angeles by 6 p.m. ET on Thursday. "The Los Angeles Dodgers anticipated having one of the best bullpens in MLB this season. Unfortunately for Dave Roberts and Co., injuries have decimated the relief corps. It puts Los Angeles in a dire position, requiring an aggressive move," wrote Johnson. "The Minnesota Twins want a premium return for closer Jhoan Duran (1.90 ERA and .537 OPS allowed) and for good reason, since he's arbitration-eligible through 2027. Ultimately, the Dodgers will be willing to win the bidding war to provide stability in the 9th inning for an October run." Not only is Durán potentially the best relief arm available, but the National League is full of teams that need high-leverage relievers. The Philadelphia Phillies don't have a clear-cut closer, and the New York Mets have a pretty thin bullpen as well. If the Dodgers bring in Durán, they'll reassert themselves as top World Series contenders, as the bullpen is one of the few things dragging them down these days. Phillies Surprisingly Named No. 1 Suitor for Top Trade Deadline Slugger

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Philadelphia Phillies are still waiting to get in on the action. In a high-pressure season, the Phillies have mostly played good baseball. But you'd be hard pressed to call them the favorites in the National League right now, and several other contenders have already made moves. The top needs many have identified for the Phillies throughout the summer have been center field and bullpen. But with Alec Bohm on the injured list, third base has emerged late in the game as a sneaky spot to upgrade. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates with third base coach Shaun Larkin #88 after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreThere's only one third baseman worth pursuing for the Phillies: Arizona Diamondbacks impending free agent slugger Eugenio Suárez. Competition will be stiff, though, if the Phillies want in on the action. However, on Sunday, Thomas Harrigan of labeled the Phillies as the No. 1 prospective suitor for Suárez, purely in terms of need. "Why are the Phillies atop this list? Because when you look at the way this roster is constructed, arguably no team is under more pressure to win now than Philadelphia," wrote Harrigan. "The Phillies got close with a World Series appearance in 2022, but they've taken a step back since then. Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos and Aaron Nola are all signed beyond 2025, but each is 32 or older. So are Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, both of whom are in the final year of their contracts." Harrigan listed six other teams as fits: in descending order, the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. With only four days to go before the Thursday deadline, we'll soon know if the Phillies want Suárez as badly as many now seem to think they should. MLB trade deadline: Live updates, news, transactions, rumors as Royals reportedly extend Seth Lugo, Yankees add Rosario, McMahon

The 2025 MLB trade deadline is just around the corner, and some teams are already making major moves. The Arizona Diamondbacks unofficially kicked things off last week by trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, and several teams added their hats to the ring over the weekend. The Yankees made two acquisitions in Ryan McMahon and Ahmed Rosario, while the Mets traded for Gregory Soto. The action should continue in the coming days as MLB's contenders scramble to add talent with the playoffs two months away. There aren't any superstars expected to be on the move in this deadline, but every contender has a hole to fill. No team is running away from the field in the standings, which means some of teams will likely need to do something to stand out. The deadline officially hits on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET. After that, the only way teams can add a player to their roster is calling up minor leaguers or signing free agents, and any player who isn't in the organization by the end of August is ineligible for the postseason.
