Teeing off a new era: Dubai's Jumeirah Golf Estates embarks on ‘The Next Chapter'

Khaleej Times3 days ago
Dubai continues to raise the stakes in the world of golf with the unveiling of a new championship course at Jumeirah Golf Estates (JGE), signaling the city's commitment to innovation in sport, luxury, and sustainable urban development.
The latest addition, aptly named The Next Chapter, represents a significant expansion to the iconic JGE, joining the existing Earth and Fire championship courses. This new 18-hole layout is designed not only to elevate Dubai's status as a premier golf destination but also to reflect the city's forward-thinking vision for lifestyle and community planning.
This ambitious project is part of a broader 4.68 million square metre masterplan spearheaded by Wasl Properties, the government-backed real estate developer. The development aims to position Dubai as a global hub for golf enthusiasts, from seasoned professionals to everyday players, while complementing the emirate's rapid urban growth.
'We're thrilled to introduce 'The Next Chapter' at Jumeirah Golf Estates, building on a strong legacy of world-class golfing experiences,' said Chris May, CEO of Dubai Golf, in an interview with Golf Digest.
Distinct Experience, Inclusive Design
He emphasized that this course will offer a different playing experience from the existing Earth and Fire layouts, balancing championship-level design with accessibility for golfers of all abilities.
May added, 'The course is intended to be highly enjoyable and playable for a broad range of golfers, providing something fresh and unique to the JGE portfolio.'
Reflecting Dubai's sustained momentum in golf, May also noted that several new courses are in the pipeline, including public-access venues to meet the rising demand among both residents and visitors, as reported earlier this month by Khaleej Times.
Luxury Meets Golf Lifestyle
One of the standout features of the new course is the integration of a luxury hotel directly within the golf environment, one of the first in the UAE. This innovative design allows guests to move effortlessly between playing on the course, relaxing in panoramic suites, and dining in the proposed on-site restaurants.
'This hotel integration transforms the golf experience, making the estate a green oasis for both golfers and non-golfers alike,' May highlighted.
Supporting facilities such as a driving range, a coaching academy, and a grass nursery will ensure that the course maintains tournament-grade conditions year-round while nurturing future talent.
Golf Driving Urban Vision
While golf remains the heart of the project, the expansion of JGE aligns with Dubai's broader urban strategy, particularly its development around Dubai South and the Al Maktoum International Airport. This connection underscores the estate's role not only as a sporting venue but as a vital part of the city's evolving community fabric.
Hesham Abdullah Al Qassim, Group CEO of Wasl, commented, 'The Next Chapter marks a key milestone for Wasl and embodies the future of urban development in Dubai. Through visionary planning and sustainable design, we are committed to enhancing the quality of life in the communities we build.'
With over 30 golf courses across the UAE, including renowned venues like Emirates Golf Club and Yas Links Abu Dhabi, this new project further cements Dubai's reputation as a destination where golf is more than a sport, it's a lifestyle.
Dubai's Visionary Golf Future
The Next Chapter is more than a name; it's a bold statement of Dubai's ongoing commitment to sporting excellence and visionary urban growth, ensuring that Jumeirah Golf Estates remains at the forefront of the city's dynamic evolution.

Shanghai braces for twin threats of tropical cyclone, tsunami

Shanghai relocated more than 280,000 people, halted hundreds of flights and ferry services and imposed speed limits on roads and railways on Wednesday as a tropical storm whipped eastern China with gales and heavy rain. Co-May's landfall in the port city of Zhoushan in Zhejiang province in the early hours of Wednesday was soon followed by warnings of a tsunami set off by a powerful earthquake off Russia's far east, raising concerns of larger-than-expected storm surges along the Chinese coast. While the winds from Co-May were weaker than those generated by typhoons, the Chinese financial hub and other cities in the Yangtze River delta have taken no chances. At least 640 flights could be cancelled at Shanghai's two main airports on Wednesday, including 410 at Pudong and 230 at Hongqiao, authorities said. All ferry services in Shanghai had been cancelled since Wednesday morning, and drivers were told to drive under 60 kph (37 mph) on highways, local media reported. Shanghai's Disneyland and Legoland remained open. But some rides and performances would be suspended at Legoland due to weather conditions, the park said. Airports at nearby cities Ningbo, Wenzhou and Hangzhou also saw flight cancellations and diversions. As of Wednesday morning, more than 75% of Wednesday's flights at Zhoushan had been cancelled. Some train services in the region were temporarily suspended with others operated under restricted speeds, state media said. Shanghai is rarely subject to direct hits from strong typhoons that generally make landfall further south in China. The most significant typhoon in recent years that landed directly in Shanghai was Bebinca last year, the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit China's financial capital since 1949. Co-May made landfall in Zhoushan in the early hours of Wednesday with maximum sustained wind speeds near its centre of 23 metres per second (83kmph). Forecasters expect Co-May to make another landfall closer to Shanghai later on Wednesday. The storm coincided with a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, about 4,000 km (2,500 miles) from Shanghai. China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said the tsunami was expected to have a "disastrous impact" on some parts of China's coast, including Shanghai and Zhoushan. The natural resources ministry also issued tsunami warnings for the two cities, which could be hit by waves of up to 1 metre in height in the early evening. Warnings of waves of up to 3 metres have been declared along Japan's Pacific coast due to the tsunami. Tsunamis generated by earthquakes are capable of travelling thousands of kilometres across vast oceans without loss of power.

22 million reasons why Topgolf Dubai is driving golf's major shift in the UAE

Dubai's golf scene is experiencing a record-breaking surge, and nothing captures this momentum better than the runaway success of Topgolf. According to Chris May, CEO of Dubai Golf, the entertainment-led venue at Emirates Golf Club saw more than 650,000 guests in the past year, hitting an eye-popping 22.6 million balls. That's an average of over 60,000 golf balls struck daily, many by first-timers. 'It's been phenomenal,' says May. 'A lot of people pick up a club for the first time there, and many have gone on to join local golf clubs. It's fun, engaging, and packed every night of the year.' Topgolf Dubai's numbers are a powerful sign of how the sport is evolving in the UAE, moving beyond traditional country club boundaries and finding new fans through innovation and accessibility. Dubai Golf, which operates flagship venues like Emirates Golf Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates, is now overseeing expansion projects to meet soaring demand. 'We've reached a stage where the existing infrastructure, world-class as it is, is operating at near capacity, especially during peak season,' May notes. Presently, the UAE boasts 26 golf courses, with Dubai leading the charge with 13. Several new courses are set to open this year, including a third layout at Jumeirah Golf Estates and a high-profile course at Dubai South, part of an Emaar mega-development. 'We had limited growth over the past 10 years,' says May. 'But now, the level of demand, both locally and internationally, has hit a tipping point.' The rise of Topgolf adds a new layer to this boom. While the UAE hosts elite tournaments like the DP World Tour Championship and Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Topgolf introduces golf in a laid-back, social setting, expanding the sport's reach across ages and skill levels. May's vision goes beyond luxury. 'I'd love to see more mid-range and affordable options, courses that are accessible and encourage new players to pick up the game,' he says. As the UAE grows its global golfing footprint, it's venues like Topgolf that are driving the next wave of players from casual fans to future champions.
