Erik ten Hag says Granit Xhaka ‘too important' for Bayer Leverkusen to ‘let go' amid Sunderland talks
The Athletic reported on Tuesday Xhaka, 32, was prioritising a move to Sunderland over other suitors, with an agreement in place between the Switzerland international and the newly-promoted Premier League club.

Xhaka's agent Jose Noguerra Rodriguez confirmed to German media on Tuesday that there was an agreement between Sunderland and his player, but in response Ten Hag emphasised his desire to keep the midfielder.
'His agent can say whatever he wants, but this club has already let three important players (Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Jonathan Tah) go, and we won't let any more go. Granit is a leader, he still has three years left on his contract here.' Ten Hag told reporters during Leverkusen's pre-season tour of Brazil, as quoted by Bild.
'It's clear – Granit is a key player, he signed here for five years and still has three years left on his contract. He's too important to us to let him go.'
Xhaka's Leverkusen contract runs until 2028 and the club's sporting managing director Simon Rolfes reiterated his importance to the club, but described any potential departure as a 'three-party' matter.
'I have repeatedly said that Granit is an important leader,' Rolfes said. 'The coach and I agree on that. We are in dialogue with all our players. In the end, it's always a three-party situation. Granit still has a three-year contract — and in principle, there can only be a change if all three sides agree to it.
'Topics like this always cause discussions and conversations. That's why it doesn't shock me.'
Xhaka has made 99 appearances for Leverkusen since joining from Arsenal in 2023, helping the club win their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24.
Ten Hag was appointed Leverkusen's new head coach earlier this summer, succeeding Xabi Alonso after his move to Real Madrid.

Jannik Sinner rehires the fitness coach he fired for playing a role in his doping case
ROME (AP) — Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has rehired Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach nearly a year after firing him for his role in the top-ranked player's doping case. The move comes after Sinner recently removed fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio from his team. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level,' a statement from Sinner's team said Wednesday. Last year, Sinner tested positive twice for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid in March; the case wasn't made public until August, shortly before the U.S. Open, which he ended up winning for the second of his four Grand Slam titles. He initially was completely cleared, based on the defense that he accidentally was exposed to the banned substance, Clostebol, via a massage from his then-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. Sinner said his fitness trainer at the time, Ferrara, purchased a product in Italy and gave it to Naldi for a cut on Naldi's finger. Naldi then treated Sinner while not wearing gloves. Sinner then fired Naldi and Ferrara, and Ferrara was hired briefly by Matteo Berrettini, another Italian player. The World Anti-Doping Agency appealed the exoneration, and Sinner agreed to serve a three-month ban that ended right before the Italian Open in May of this year. Sinner, who won Wimbledon this month, will return to action at the Cincinnati Open next month as he prepares to defend his U.S. Open title. ___ AP tennis: Andrew Dampf, The Associated Press

Ovi Ejaria on trial with La Liga club after not playing since 2022
Ovi Ejaria on trial with La Liga club after not playing since 2022 Without a club since January 2024 and having not played a match since 2022, Nigerian-born Ovi Ejaria is looking to revive his career. The former Liverpool prospect is currently on trial at Real Oviedo, backed by Veljko Paunovic, his former coach at Reading. Despite his long spell of inactivity, the Nigerian attacking midfielder is showing better fitness than expected and is impressing in training. His technical quality and dribbling skills remain undiminished. Ovi Ejaria (26) truly made his mark in the Championship with Reading before an injury stalled his progress. Now a free agent and potentially a low-cost signing, he could be an intriguing addition for Oviedo, who are seeking more attacking creativity on their return to La Liga. One to watch closely.

From ball girl to teenage super-sub: Who is England's Michelle Agyemang?
"Something special" was how England boss Sarina Wiegman described Michelle Agyemang after the Lionesses latest Women's Euros victory. It was the 19-year-old, yet again, who saved England from the brink of elimination. For the second time in two games the young forward scored a decisive goal, this time leaving it as late as to draw the Lionesses level with Italy and take the game to extra time, where England dug deep to avoid another nail-biting penalty shootout and go through 2-1 winners. The achievement is even more impressive when you consider it was only four years ago that Agyemang was a ball girl during England's World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland in 2021. Back then, it was her first time going to Wembley, and her first real encounter with England's senior national team. Fast-forward to 2025, and it is hard to imagine the without their youngest member. So who is Michelle Agyemang, and how has she risen so quickly through the football ranks? Regular Arsenal and Young Lioness goalscorer Born in South Ockendon, Essex, in 2006, Agyemang grew up as a fan of Arsenal and joined the north London team at the age of six. In 2022, aged 16, she made her debut for Arsenal in a 4-0 win over Leicester City in the Women's Super League. It was around this time that she also started as a Young Lioness, having first been called up to represent her country in the Women's Under-16s squad. She scored an impressive 10 goals in 12 appearances for the WU17s before making the step-up to the WU19s. The call-up from Wiegman In April this year Agyemang was called up to England women's senior squad for the first time. Earlier the same week, she had helped the WU19s qualify for the European Women's Under-19 Championship in Poland. She got her debut in the Lionesses' UEFA Women's Nations League clash against Belgium in Leuven, scoring a stunning goal after just 41 seconds on the pitch. Despite her best efforts, the team lost 3-2, but it was undoubtedly her stand-out performance that secured her a place in Weigman's 23-player squad for Euro 2025 in Switzerland. First senior tournament Agyemang's success on the pitch has continued into Euro 2025. Despite a loss to France in England's first match in the tournament, the team's campaign got into gear with wins over the Netherlands and Wales, which sent them through to the knock-out stages. It was during England's quarter-final showdown against Sweden that Agyemang truly proved her worth, coming off the bench and levelling the game in the 81st minute, England's second goal in three minutes to draw level with the Swedes. And she was at it again in the semi-final. In the 96th minute, with England's hopes fading in the face of fierce Italian resistance, the ball fell to super-sub Agyemang in the box and she sent it flying into the back of the net. And if that wasn't enough, Agyemang almost won the game herself in extra time, hitting the bar with an audacious lob in the 116th minute. Read more: It was Chloe Kelly who won the game in the end, slotting in her follow-up after the Italy keeper Laura Giuliani saved her initial penalty. But in the final, all eyes will be on the youngster Agyemang. "She has something special," Wiegman said of Agyemang. "She's only 19-years-old, she's very mature, she knows exactly what she has to do. "When you talk about little things that she picks up straight away, because she's not only in the 18-yard box very dangerous but when we have to go to her as a target player, she keeps the ball really well too. "Even when you saw her shot hit the crossbar, that was not just a shot, she was aiming for it. If she continues like this she has a very bright future."
