[UPDATED] GRS wants to continue PH ties, but insists on leading role for Sabah polls
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the continuity in the cooperation is in line with the strong support from Sabah PH when GRS was facing an attempt to topple the state government, known as the Kinabalu Move, in January 2023.
"Since then, the strong GRS-PH cooperation, which has clearly brought stability and progress to the state, will continue to be maintained as a genuine partnership, one that is believed to bring many benefits and positive outcomes to the people in Sabah.
"Thank you to the Sabah PH leaders from all of us in GRS," the GRS chairman said in his closing speech for the Parti Gagasan Rakyat (Gagasan Rakyat) annual general assembly at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
Present were GRS' party component presidents, including Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee of Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), LDP's Datuk Chin Su Phin, United Sabah National Organisation's (USNO) Tan Sri Pandikar Amin, and PCS's Tan Sri Anifah Aman.
Sabah PH leaders were Datuk Ewon Benedick (Sabah PH chief and Upko president), Datuk Mustapha Sakmud (Parti Keadilan Rakyat's chairman), Datuk Phoong Jin Tze (Democratic Action Party's chairman), and Lahirul Latigu (Sabah Amanah chairman).
Former chief minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan also attended the event.
Hajiji, who is also Gagasan Rakyat president, also stressed the importance of GRS as a strong coalition of local parties in fulfilling the aspirations of Sabahans who want to see local parties dominate state politics.
"When I attended the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS)-Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) event, I felt a burning spirit among party members. Both parties have their strengths and contribute greatly to GRS.
"It is no exaggeration to say that PBS and STAR are the backbone of GRS. They are comrades-in-arms, always standing by our side, offering support and wise counsel in their roles as GRS members.
"SAPP, USNO, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Party Cinta Sabah (PCS), all these parties play a role in uniting and strengthening us.
"Let us continue to strengthen our unity so that local parties may stand as one. Truly, the strength within GRS is the key to winning big in the upcoming election," he said.

Statements from 60 witnesses, including teachers and students, have been recorded. State leaders: Fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride

KOTA KINABALU: The peace and harmony enjoyed by the people of Sabah need to be treated as the most valuable legacy for future generations, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. In urging all citizens to continue preserving this harmony, he said the unity among the diverse races and religions in the state is key to its strength and prosperity. 'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said at the launch of the state-level National Month 2025 as well as Sabah Day, which also falls on Aug 31. Hajiji said every individual is responsible in making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms an avenue to strengthen understanding, rather than sow division. 'Today's launch (of the fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign) is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence, which is not just freedom from colonisation, but also from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of their forefathers' struggle in defending the dignity of the nation, said Hajiji. In GEORGE TOWN, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described Penang as a true reflection of the Malaysia Madani spirit, with its rich diversity of cultures, races and religions living harmoniously in an atmosphere of mutual respect. 'Unity is our strength. It is the foundation of Penang's continued progress, in alignment with the aspirations of the Penang2030 Vision. 'The National Month celebration is a manifestation of our love and affection for our beloved country. It is also a tribute to the sacrifices of past generations who gave everything for the freedom we enjoy today,' he said after launching the state-level National Month celebration and the 'Fly the Jalur Gemilang' campaign. He said Malaysians should reflect on the true significance of the Jalur Gemilang, a symbol of sovereignty, unity and national dignity. New villages welcome news on 13MP incentives
Chinese new villagers want better basic infrastructure, job opportunities and more community spaces as the Government pledges support under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said the socio‑economic level of Chinese new villages would be strengthened through the Kampung Baru Development Master Plan, which would provide financing for entrepreneurial activities, including the preparation and upgrading of hawker sites. Lim says the Prime Minister's announcement on 13MP is encouraging. At Selangor's Seri Berjuntai New Village in Bestari Jaya, which has about 2,500 residents, village chief Chiang Yoke Leong said employment prospects were limited. 'There are more job opportunities in other towns like Ijok,' he said. On infrastructure, Chiang said that while some drainage upgrades have been carried out, those projects were 'few and far between'. He also highlighted the lack of a waste collection facility, adding that tourism had yet to take off in the village. 'Most people bypass our village, but with funding and new proposals we hope to build up some kind of cottage industry or tourist sites,' he said. Kampung Cempaka New Village chief Theresa Lim said Anwar's announcement was encouraging. 'It is good news for new villages,' she said. Lim said that while most residents in the Petaling Jaya village were senior citizens, a younger community still remained. 'There is potential for them to get some kind of funding to start a business in the village. 'As for infrastructure, the situation can be improved with better roads and proper drainage,' she said. Lim also hoped for more green spaces for the village's elderly folk.
