‘If we want to laugh we laugh; if we want to cry we cry': Arne Slot's heartfelt speech before Liverpool's pre-season match after Diogo Jota tragedy

Liverpool start their pre-season friendlies with a match against English second-tier side Preston North End on Sunday, 10 days after the death of forward Diogo Jota. Manager Arne Slot told the club's in-house media that he struggled to find the right words to tell the players before what will be the first match they play since the shock passing of their teammate.
Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain on July 3. 'What I've said to the players, it's very difficult to find the right words because we constantly debate what is appropriate,' said Slot in an emotional interview.
'What is appropriate in our actions? What is appropriate (for) what we have to say? Can we train again? Can we laugh again? Can we be angry if there's a wrong decision?
'And I've said to them, maybe the best thing for us to do is handle this situation like Jota was. And what I meant with that is that Jota was always himself, it didn't matter if he was talking to me, to his teammates, to the staff, he was always himself.
'So let us try to be ourselves as well. So, if we want to laugh we laugh; if we want to cry we're going to cry,' he said.
Liverpool had delayed the return of their players for pre-season training as most of them had attended Jota's funeral in Portugal last week. Slot said that the Portuguese forward was someone he used to turn to whenever he needed 'something special' during games. 'I always looked at him and said, 'now we need something special from you',' Slot said. 'And he delivered so many times. I can come up with all of these moments.
'So we are in a very difficult time, so let's try to do what Diogo did so many times. If it's so difficult then try a little bit harder or just keep on going and try to make it work.'

Ravindra Jadeja-Led Courageous Fight Goes In Vain As India Lose At Lord's, Go 2-1 Down To England

Ravindra Jadeja's heroic effort went in vain as England edged out India by 22 runs on the fifth and final day of a wildly fluctuating third Test with skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer playing pivotal roles here on Monday. England thus go 2-1 up in the five-match series. The day started with India requiring 135 runs and England having to pick six wickets after setting the visitors a 193-run target. The hosts got four Indian batters out before lunch but were made to work hard for the remaining two wickets in the last two sessions. India were finally all out for 170. Archer (3/55) and Stokes (3/48) were the chief architects of the English victory, even as Jadeja battled hard for India with a gritty unbeaten 61. India lost the big wickets of Rishabh Pant (9), KL Rahul (39), Washington Sundar (0), and Nitish Reddy (13) in the first session to hand England the advantage. Lead pacer Archer sent Pant's off stump for a walk with a jaffa that straightened after landing on the perfect length. Skipper Stokes rose to the occasion as he trapped KL Rahul in front of the wicket, giving the momentum back to England. The on-field umpire was not convinced by the England team's loud appeal for an lbw, prompting Stokes to go upstairs and the decision came in his favour. Jofra was on the money consistently this morning and pulled off a brilliant catch off his own bowling to send back Sundar and Chris Wokes, and then had Washinton Sundar edge one to the keeper. Their efforts paved the way for England victory. Brief Scores: England: 387 and 192. India: 387 and 170 all out in 74.5 overs (KL Rahul 39, Ravindra Jadeja 61 not out; Jofra Archer 3/55, Ben Stokes 3/48).

Lord's Test: Jadeja's gallant fifty goes in vain as India slump to 22-run defeat

LONDON: The sellout Lord's crowd thundered and bellowed every ball defended by the Indian tail and every single Ravindra Jadeja took. A riveting session of Test cricket was on. The first session belonged to England. Four wickets fell and India were reeling at 112 for eight. In came Jasprit Bumrah, known for his bowling exploits. India's hopes were almost shattered. Then the rearguard action began. Jadeja was batting to steer India over that elusive victory target of 193 set by England on Sunday. No one would have thought the match would stretch beyond tea. But it did. In the end, Bumrah played 54 balls for five runs and later Mohammed Siraj played 30 balls and bridged the gap to just 22 runs. And just when hopes glistened and danced in the distance in the afternoon sun, Siraj got out. The two along with Jadeja batted for more than two-and-a-half hours. Lord's, the home of cricket, couldn't have asked for more. Test cricket is all about winning sessions. One cannot stop striving for more until the match is over. A team cannot afford to lose the grip over a contest, no matter how dominant they have been, as one slip-up can cost them the match. That reality must have hit the England camp hard on Monday even if they had finally won the match to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Ben Stokes and Co on the fifth and final day of the third Test at the Lord's Cricket Ground did exceedingly well to floor India in the morning session. Reeling at 112/8 and with two more sessions remaining, India was all but out of the match. They still needed 81 to cross the line with Ravindra Jadeja the only recognised batter at the crease. The Saurashtra all-rounder, however, had different plans as he along with tail-enders Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj came up with stiff resistance to take the game to the last session. An unfortunate dismissal of Siraj ended the resistance as India fell short by 23 runs but Jadeja's heroics with valuable support from Siraj and Bumrah made sure they didn't go down without a fight. The morning session was always going to be crucial when the India batters KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant took the field. With India still needing 135 to win, the most successful Indian pair on English soil in the longest format of the game had to see off the incisive spells from captain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, who replaced Brydon Carse, the home team's most successful bowler on the penultimate day, from the Pavilion End to join his captain.
