Fauja Singh statue to be installed at Moga
Fauja Singh passed away at the age of 114 years on July 14, 2025 at his native Jalandhar village in Beas Pind when a motor vehicle ran into him.
Singh, a global running legend had several age group level records to his name. He started his running career at the ripe age of 89.
At 100, he became the first centenarian to complete a marathon, when he finished the 2011 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
Well known statue artists Manjeet Singh Gill and his brother Surjit Singh Gill are constructing the statue.
"We will be making two statues of Fauja saab, one will be installed at the Mahan Desh Bhagat park in Moga, while the other will be given to Fauja Singh's family in Jalandhar" said well known sculpture MS Gill in an exclusive chat with UNI.
The popular 'Mahan Desh Bhagat park' is situated at Ghall Kalan village in this district.
Gill informed that the statue will be made of mixed metal and fibre glass and would be six and a half feet in height.
Gill explained that he and his brother decided to create Fauja Singh' s statue because the athlete brought glory to the nation and was an inspiration to the people.
"We artists can only pay the tribute through our art, we create sculptures of those people who contribute something to society, what Singh did was unparalleled. He brought a great deal of pride to the country, he gave a message to youngsters to stay away from drugs, and he showed the elderly that health was a matter of lifestyle," Gill said.
The Mahan Desh Bhagat Park started and maintained by the Gill brothers has several statues of freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Chandrashekhar Azad, Madan Lal Dhingra, Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Apart from patriotic personalities statues of poets like Bulleh Shah, Ustad Najmi scientists like Albert Einstein and Narendra Singh Kapany are also there.
Statues of religious figures like the Sikh Gurus and Indian Army's martyrs further raise the sanctity of the park.

'This Cap I Give To Very Few People': Shubman Gill Receives Heartwarming Gift From Sunil Gavaskar
India captain Shubman Gill received a special gift from 'Little Master' Sunil Gavaskar after he came close but stood too far from breaking his record for most runs by an Indian in a Test series. Shubman agonisingly fell 20 runs short of breaking Gavaskar's tally of 774 as he concluded the series with 754 runs to his name. With his robust technique, he looked poised for an extended stay on the case but was undone by a sharply nipping delivery from Gus Atkinson, punching his return ticket on 11(9). At the end of a throbbing contest on Day 3 of the fifth Test, Gavaskar met Gill, gifted a shirt with the SG initials and a special cap that he doesn't give to too many people. He hopes that after missing out on the elusive milestone by a whisker, he will strive for it in future assignments. "I have got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (me). At least you got something to aim for in the next series. It is just a little gift. It is a shirt with SG initials, someone made it for me, I am giving this to you, but I don't know if it will fit you. This is a cap which I give to very few people with my signature. All the best," Gavaskar said after meeting Gill in a video posted by Sony Sports on X. India played a double bluff by setting up the field for a 'sweet chin music', but Siraj bowled a searing, angling yorker to rattle Zak Crawley's timber. Impressed by the brilliant piece of gambit, Gavaskar promised to wear his lucky jacket, hoping it would turn India's fortune. "That last over was fantastic. Sending a fielder over there, but then bowling the yorker. Tomorrow I am going to wear my lucky jacket, which I wore in Australia, the white one during the Gabba Test, on the last day," he concluded. In pursuit of a 374-run target, England opener Crawley and Ben Duckett raised a 50-run opening stand before the former departed on 14(36). As things stand, India is eight wickets shy of victory, while England needs 324 runs with two days left for play.

'I was a baby, Gill is a leader' – Sunil Gavaskar declares Shubman's 754 vs England more valuable than his own 774 vs West Indies in 1971
Sunil Gavaskar gifted Shubman Gill a shirt and a cap with SG initials. (Screengrabs) Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said Shubman Gill 's 754 runs are far better than what he achieved way back in 1971. Gill finished with 754 runs, just 20 short of Gavaskar's record of 774, during the fifth Test against England in London on August 3. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I think in anticipation of him going past my record, I got something for him. But well, I mean, this is all in God's hands. But 754 runs, it's fantastic," he said on Sony Sports. "The difference is that 754 came with the additional responsibility of being captain. I was the baby of the team. You know, it wouldn't have mattered if I had failed. "Nobody would have given a hoot if I had failed. But to be the captain and score 750-plus runs—750-plus runs where he's making a difference to his side's fortunes. Don't go by those 20 runs, but just see what that 754 has done for Indian cricket." Following the day's play, Gavaskar presented Gill with a personalized shirt bearing his initials "SG" and a special autographed cap. "I have got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (me). At least you've got something to aim for in the next series. It is just a little gift.
