Recycling project expands to Subang Jaya, Sepang
A NEW door-to-door recyclable waste collection programme has been launched for households in Subang Jaya and Sepang.
KDEB Waste Management has teamed up with a food-and-beverage manufacturer for the Selangor Recycling (SelKitar) Programme, launched at Shah Alam Convention Centre.
The programme is expected to begin next month in several areas under Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang), covering 17,000 households.
It is an extension of the Door-to-Door Collection and Recycling Programme introduced by Nestle in 2020, as part of its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy, in which the company collaborates with local councils such as Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and waste management companies.
So far, the project, which was recently extended to Penang, had reached 200,000 households in Peninsular Malaysia and has prevented 33,000 tonnes of waste, including 20,000 tonnes of plastic, from going into landfills or the ocean, Nestle Malaysia chief executive officer Juan Aranols said.
State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said Selangor, the most developed and populous state in the country, generated more than 7,000 tonnes of domestic waste daily.
'Much of the waste still ends up in landfills. This is not a trajectory we can afford.
'Our landfill capacity is not infinite. Recognising this, the state government has made sustainable waste management a cornerstone of our environmental strategy by prioritising separation at source, advancing circular economy practices and strengthening the role of local authorities in driving long-term changes.
'Through First Selangor Plan (RS-1), we are transitioning from a 'collect-and-dump' model to one focusing on recycling, based in resource efficiency, circularity and citizen responsibility.'
She said waste must not be seen as something to be disposed but to be managed, with systems that restore value to used materials.
According to Jamaliah, under the SelKitar programme, two additional lorries would be mobilised in Subang Jaya and Sepang, to recover recyclables six days a week.
'This phase serves as an important stepping stone as we scale up recycling efforts across all 12 local councils.
'It lays the foundation for a more comprehensive and coordinated approach, positioning the state to significantly improve its recycling rate and move closer to our long-term sustainability goals,' said Jamaliah.
KDEB Waste Management managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said the SelKitar programme marked a strategic shift in how waste was managed, especially plastic and packaging.
'It focuses not just on disposal but on recovery, recycling and rethinking our consumption patterns.
'Through this programme, we aim to create a sustainable loop that engages producers, consumers and waste managers in a meaningful way,' said Ramli.
Also present at the launch were Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim.

Landmark deal boosts Malaysia's semiconductor hub dream
Historic partnership: Zafrul, Syed Alwi, Anwar, Sim and Jaffri at the MoU Exchange Ceremony. PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's ambition to emerge as a global semiconductor hub received a boost as Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (Crest) and the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to launch the Engineering Talent for Semiconductor Industry (ETSI) Programme. Held in conjunction with the Asean Semiconductor Summit 2025 and marking the first anniversary of the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), the MOU was signed by Crest chief executive officer Jaffri Ibrahim and HRD Corp chief executive officer Dr Syed Alwi Mohamed Sultan. The exchange was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. ETSI aims to upskill and reskill 15,000 tertiary students, graduates, workers and researchers to meet the growing demand of Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem. Led by Crest, the programme aligns with the NSS and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 by focusing on talent development across the semiconductor value chain. 'This is not just a partnership, but a national strategy in motion. 'By developing globally competitive engineers, Malaysia and Asean will be better positioned to capitalise on a sector projected to be worth US$2 trillion (RM8.46 trillion) by 2030,' said Tengku Zafrul. The ETSI programme forms part of a larger effort under the NSS, which targets training 60,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030. It also supports Malaysia's leadership in the Asean Framework for Integrated Semiconductor Supply Chain (AFISS), an initiative to empower SMEs and the workforce with the skills, tools and financing needed to succeed in the high-value semiconductor sector. Sim said talent remains the driving force behind economic transformation. 'Through HRD Corp, we are implementing industry-driven, outcome-oriented training models. The race in semiconductors will be defined by the calibre of talent we nurture, not just infrastructure or investment,' he said. Sim noted that HRD Corp's training schemes, including claimable courses and employer-led initiatives, reduce the financial burden on companies. 'It's about building a sustainable talent pipeline where employers play a central role,' he added. The ETSI programme adopts a multi-pronged approach by enhancing employability through early technical exposure and curriculum alignment, boosting workforce skills and strengthening postgraduate R&D capacity. It is designed to create a resilient, innovation-ready workforce with technical depth and global outlook. 'Talent is the heartbeat of Malaysia's semiconductor ambition. Through ETSI and our Semiconductor Centre of Excellence, we are equipping engineers and researchers with cutting-edge tools and future-critical skills. 'We're building not just talent, but innovators and changemakers,' said Jaffri. The Semiconductor CoE, spearheaded by Crest, offers advanced training infrastructure to facilitate knowledge transfer and technology development, further cementing Malaysia's position in the global semiconductor value chain. Echoing the sentiment, Syed Alwi described the partnership as a strategic leap forward. 'Every technological advancement must be met with a talent leap. With initiatives like ETSI and the Industrial Skills Framework for Semiconductors, we are preparing Malaysia's workforce to lead in design, innovation and IP creation,' he said. ETSI exemplifies a whole-of- nation approach by uniting government, industry, academia and training institutions to build long-term competitiveness in semiconductors, deep tech and advanced manufacturing. As global demand surges, the Crest–HRD Corp collaboration is poised to help Malaysia deliver not only a future-ready workforce, but also homegrown innovation that will shape the next chapter of the global semiconductor industry.

Father of Black Thorn durian recognised with Datukship
Big contribution: Leow showing the World Durian Championship Trophy at Dewan Sri Pinang. — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star GEORGE TOWN: The prized bittersweet Black Thorn durian, known as Orh Chi in Hokkien, originated in a modest orchard in Lima Kongsi near Sungai Jawi nearly four decades ago. It was there that Datuk Leow Cheok Kiang, 65, grafted a hybrid between a local durian tree and an unidentified Thai variety on his father's land – an innovation that earned him a datukship yesterday. 'It took almost 30 years for the trees to produce quality fruits,' he said. In 2011, Leow submitted his Black Thorn durian to Penang's Annual Fruit Competition, in which it secured second place. The following three years, it won first prize, gaining international recognition and was eventually registered as D200 with the Agriculture Department in 2014. Today, Black Thorn rivals Musang King in prestige, with demand growing in China, Indonesia and other export markets. In recognition of his contribution to agriculture, Leow was awarded the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri, which carries the title Datuk, during the 84th birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib at Dewan Sri Pinang yesterday. Leow, who now manages orchards in Sungai Baung, Junjung and Relau in Seberang Perai, was joined by his family at the ceremony. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and former Jawi assemblyman Soon Lip Chee praised him as a symbol of innovation and perseverance in farming. The ceremony also saw Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz receiving the Darjah Panglima Pangkuan Negeri, which carries the Datuk Seri title. Tengku Zafrul thanked Penang for the honour and gave his assurance that the ministry would continue working to position the state as an investment and commercial hub. 'I'm thankful to the Penang government for this award and am glad to have brought pride to Penang,' he said. This year, 1,530 people received state honours, medals and awards. From that group, 150 were presented state titles while 1,380 were conferred the Stars and Medals of Honour.
