Elite 5-star PF Ashlyn Koupal provides recruiting update, lists Spartans as a finalist

USA Today15 hours ago
Michigan State women's basketball has been named one of five finalists for an elite power forward prospect in the 2026 class.
Ashlyn Koupal of Wagner, S.D. has reportedly named her five finalists and Michigan State is in the mix, according to Dushawn London of 247Sports. The Spartans are joined by Nebraska, TCU, Kansas and Duke as finalists for the elite power forward prospect.
Koupal is listed as a five-star power forward, with a recruiting rating of 99.56 in 247Sports' composite rating system. She is ranked as the No. 3 power forward and No. 9 overall prospect in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. She is also ranked as the top player from South Dakota in the class.
Koupal has previously named her top five schools -- which included each of these same schools mentioned as finalists. But another notable update from London's recent reporting is that it sounds like she is nearing a decision.
'Each school has done their best to show me what it's going to be like and how I'll fit, so now it's about how I feel about all of them," Koupal told London.
There is no scheduled commitment date at this time for Koupal so we will just need to continue to monitor her recruitment in anticipation of a big decision coming. Michigan State women's basketball has had a resurgence over the past two seasons under new head coach Robyn Fralick, and landing a commitment of Koupal's nature would truly push them into the upper tier of the Big Ten. This could be a massive recruitment for the Spartans and the quickly evolving program under Fralick.

Top 10 NHL pick Porter Martone reportedly picks Michigan State

We should get confirmation later today, but there is word that Porter Martone — taken 6th overall by the Flyers — will be going to Michigan State It appears Michigan State hockey is close to adding a major prospect to next year's team. Hockey insider at Sportsnet Elliotte Friedman is reporting that star prospect winger Porter Martone will heading to Michigan State. Martone is one of the top remaining prospects and would be a massive addition to the Spartans' already loaded 2026-27 roster. Martone spent the last three seasons in the OHL where he became a top-tier NHL prospect. The Philadelphia Flyers selected Martone with the No. 6 overall pick in this year's entry draft last month. Michigan State hockey came up short in the battle for fellow star prospect Gavin McKenna so landing Martone is great news. Friendman is expecting an official announcement to come out on Monday, but this is a massive win for the Spartans should it become official as Friedman is reporting. Nebraska baseball alum Mason McConnaughey signs with Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers signed former Nebraska baseball pitcher Mason McConnaughey to a signing bonus of $495,825 over the weekend. This was reported by Evan Bland of the Omaha World-Herald. McConnaughey missed the entirety of 2024 after suffering an injury at the beginning of the season. With that being said, that doesn't diminish what he was able to do while with the Huskers. All told, he recorded a record of 10-4 while in Lincoln, tallying 110 strikeouts in 86.1 innings pitched. Now, he will look to join a Rangers ballclub that has several young arms on the staff. This could be a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Rangers, as McConnaughey can produce in a big way when healthy. It will certainly be interesting to see how he fares over the course of his career. He was one of the top pitchers on Nebraska's staff before his injuries, and he certainly has productive stuff.
