Can the appointment of Nurul Izzah, Saifuddin Nasution help PKR win GE16?

Sinar Daily5 days ago

SHAH ALAM - The appointment of Nurul Izzah Anwar and Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) joint election directors marks a significant strategic move by the party as it gears up for the next general election.
The pairing of the party's deputy president and its former secretary-general simultaneously reflects an effort to unite experience, idealism and tactical approaches in preparing for the challenges of the next general election (GE), particularly in strengthening PKR's position within the unity government.
Additionally, this new arrangement seemed to aim at balancing narrative strength and electoral machinery, especially as GE16 is expected to take place amidst intense competition between the government and opposition blocs.
As such, the effectiveness of the election machinery is considered crucial and the combination of two prominent PKR figures offers potential synergy between micro and macro-political strategies.
Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) senior political science lecturer Dr Ariff Aizuddin Azlan said the dynamic duo could generate fresh momentum for the election, provided they were not overshadowed by toxic or misinformed perceptions that could hinder their capabilities.
Based on their comparable political experience, whether when PKR was in the opposition or in government, he noted that party mobilisation would be more efficient and easier with each of them contributing a unique narrative.
'However, it must be remembered that political cosmetics like this are no guarantee the public will be easily swayed because, ultimately, the true determinant is the government's performance,' he told Sinar on Monday.
Previously, PKR's communications director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that the appointment was decided during the Political Bureau and Central Leadership Council (MPP) meetings.
He added that the decision could offer an advantage to the party led by President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the coming elections.
Meanwhile, Ariff Aizuddin opined that the selection of the two individuals did not indicate or open the way for any party to dominate seat negotiations for the GE, as each party has key figures that could be put forward.
Moreover, he noted that PKR was a multiracial party that operated within a coalition framework and must consider the views of its allies.
'It is still too early to assume that this appointment is part of an introductory process.
'There are still many in PKR who could be highlighted, but for now, other political players can be seen as a relevant reserve bench to replace Anwar in the future,' he added. UiTM senior political science lecturer Dr Ariff Aizuddin Azlan (left), PKR veteran Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (right)
Alternatively, PKR veteran Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid said that the pairing of PKR's deputy president and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) secretary allowed the party's components to work as a strong and united team under the party's guidance and framework.
The former Kapar MP said it was also part of the strategy to win and maintain the current government after GE16.
'The capabilities of both sides (PKR and PH) are crucial as the party's internal machinery is led by Nurul Izzah while PH's machinery is under Saifuddin Nasution,' he said.

Next GE is a question of life and death for UMNO in Pahang: Paya Besar MP

PAYA Besar UMNO Division Chief Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah has described the upcoming GE16 as a life-and-death battle for UMNO, crucial to ensuring the future of the next generations in Pahang. Speaking at the 30th Paya Besar UMNO Division Meeting at Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Kuantan on Saturday, he said GE16 is not just about electing representatives but about shaping the state's future direction. 'For us, GE16 is a life-and-death battlefield. It's not just about electing representatives but about determining the future of our children and grandchildren in Pahang,' he said. The Paya Besar MP emphasized that UMNO cannot afford to be negligent, as it would significantly affect the future of the party and the state. 'If we are careless or negligent, we will not only lose power but also the right to determine the fate of our people, our state, and the party we love. 'We protect UMNO today, and UMNO will protect our children tomorrow. If we defend our power today, tomorrow the people will continue to enjoy a just and caring government,' he added. Despite past electoral setbacks, Mohd Shahar said UMNO remains hopeful, noting that in the previous election, out of 24 District Voting Centres (PDM) in the division, UMNO won only six at the state assembly level and 13 at the parliamentary level. He said the division is implementing a 3R strategy—retain, reclaim, and reduce—to strengthen its grassroots, recapture lost strongholds, and ensure victory in GE16. —June 29, 2025 Main image: South China Morning Post

Rafizi's criticisms dragging PKR backwards, says report

Rafizi Ramli had resigned from the Cabinet after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the post of PKR deputy president. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The accusations levelled by former economy minister Rafizi Ramli at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim are dragging PKR backward, says Berita Harian group editor Zulkifli Jalil. In a recent opinion piece, Zulkifli said that Rafizi, since resigning from the Cabinet, had seemed to be 'burning the mosquito net to kill the mosquito', using a Malay idiom to describe how the former minister's criticisms will harm the party's image. 'On Friday (June 20), Rafizi started his first podcast, 'Yang Berhenti Menteri', after his exit from the Cabinet. 'He is still making accusations. He likes to make his own conclusions and point fingers at the prime minister,' he said. Zulkifli criticised Rafizi for publicly going against PKR, pointing out that the party took 25 years to reach where it is today. 'Why burn the mosquito net to kill a mosquito? Rafizi's actions seem to be dragging PKR backward,' he said. Rafizi had resigned from the Cabinet after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the post of PKR deputy president. In his podcast, he said it was better for him to resign than to become a 'lame duck' minister or a 'yes man'. Rafizi claimed it was clear he had lost the prime minister's confidence, making it impossible to carry out reforms effectively. However, Zulkifli said Rafizi had been rash to resign, as he still had the support of the public despite losing party support. He pointed out that Rafizi had not been asked or pressured to resign, and the prime minister himself had asked him to stay. Zulkifli said there was no need for a minister to hold a party post, and that Rafizi had a good track record as economy minister with initiatives such as the People's Income Initiative, Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and the 13th Malaysia Plan. He added that Rafizi should have calmed down and asked himself if resigning would have benefited the party. Zulkifli said winning and losing is common in politics. 'Politics is very dynamic. One cannot be petty in politics. A politician must resist criticism. He cannot be thin-skinned (telinga nipis),' he added.

‘Sik dengar bedok': Fazzrudin clarifies Sarawak's NCR efforts in response to Nurul Izzah

Fazzrudin says Nurul Izzah's remarks seemed to suggest concern for Sarawak but overlooked the extensive efforts already undertaken by the state government. KUCHING (June 28): PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar would have had a better understanding of the Native Customary Rights (NCR) land issue in Sarawak if she had paid closer attention, instead of merely 'melepas batuk di tangga' (saying half-heartedly), said Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier. In a Facebook post today, Fazzrudin said Nurul Izzah appeared disconnected from the realities on the ground, referencing a local expression 'sik dengar bedok' (not aware of what's happening). 'But thanks to her for seemingly showing concern. Probably she thinks the Sarawak state election is near,' he added. Fazzrudin was responding to Nurul Izzah's recent statement calling for faster action on land surveys and ownership approvals for NCR land in Sarawak, and a halt to the issuance of new licences on disputed land. He said Nurul Izzah's remarks seemed to suggest concern for Sarawak but overlooked the extensive efforts already undertaken by the state government. Fazzrudin explained that since October 2010, the Sarawak government, in collaboration with the federal government and with additional funds, has implemented the NCR Land Survey Programme to improve recognition of NCR land rights. Between the 1960s and 2010, a total of 260,000 hectares of NCR land were surveyed and titles issued. Since the implementation of the new initiative in 2010, the progress has been significant. 'From October 2010 to May 2025, a total of 1,203,003 hectares of NCR land have been measured perimeter-wise. Once it has been measured and gazetted as NCR under section 6 of the Sarawak Land Code, the rights of the landowners are guaranteed,' he said. Fazzrudin explained that the next phase — dividing the land into individual lots — is more complex and time-consuming due to overlapping claims and the requirement for landowners to be present during boundary verification. 'In addition, there are also overlapping claims that need to be resolved. Sometimes the process takes time,' he said. Despite these challenges, he said the state government has successfully continued to measure and issue individual titles, and remains fully committed to the programme 'We even went a step further by amending our land code, namely, apart from NCR land areas, land occupied by communities can be legally recognised through NTD (Native Territorial Domain). 'In addition, we have stopped applications for government land for large-scale plantation purposes since March 2015. 'But if there is more detailed information about the NCR location that he mentioned, we can investigate and solve it together,' Fazzrudin added. fazzrudin abdul rahman Land Survey ncr land nurul izzah
