New Rumor About the MCU's Next THOR Project Could Mean a Shift Away From Chris Hemsworth's Reign — GeekTyrant

New Rumor About the MCU's Next THOR Project Could Mean a Shift Away From Chris Hemsworth's Reign — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyranta day ago

Aside from Chris Hemsworth's casting in Avengers: Doomsday , Marvel has been pretty quiet about the future of Thor. There has been some talk about a fifth Thor film, but nothing official has been announced, and if this new rumor is true, it makes sense as to why.
Industry insider Daniel Richtman revealed (via CB) that Marvel Studios is developing a project known as Thor Quest , a title from a 2023 children's book centered on a young Thor's first quest to find Mjolnir.
There's no information pointing toward whether the Marvel Studios project is a movie or a TV show, but potentially shifting the focus to a young version of Thor could mean Hemworth's God of Thunder might indeed be retiring the character after the next Avengers crossover.
This, like all rumors, is just that for now, but it could point to a reason behind Hemsworth's farewell-esque tribute video that he shared last month. As usual, we will just have to wait and see how it all pans out.

Marvel's ‘Thunderbolts*' Arrives On Streaming This Week

Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan in ... More "Thunderbolts*." Thunderbolts*, Marvel's latest adventure starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and David Harbour, is coming to digital streaming this week. Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts*, aka The New Avengers, opened in theaters on May 2. The official summary for the film reads, 'Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova (Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Stan), Red Guardian (Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). 'After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it's too late?' Rated PG-13, Thunderbolts* also stars Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Pierce. Disney-Marvel announced in a YouTube trailer on June 18 that Thunderbolts* would be arriving on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, July 1. Thunderbolts* will be available to purchase for $29.99 on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. In addition, Thunderbolts* will be available to rent for $24.99 for a 48-hour period that begins once the viewer begins watching the film. Jake Schreier Pitched His Ideas About 'Thunderbolts' While Working On Netflix Hit 'Beef' In an interview with The Wrap published on Thunderbolts* opening day in theaters on May 2, director Jake Schreier told the trade publication that he began pitching his ideas for the Marvel antihero film while directing episodes for acclaimed 2022 Netflix dark comedy series Beef, starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. During the long process of laying out his game plan for Thunderbolts* for Marvel Studios, Schreier told The Wrap that he even brought Beef creator Lee Sung Jin to work on some drafts of the script. 'It was about bringing a lot of that tone that we explored in Beef and feeling like that could work on an even larger scale,' Schreier told The Wrap. 'He really believed in this idea that you could explore darker, internal issues and that these ideas are not niche anymore, that those are really universal things that everyone experienced.' Thunderbolts* to date has earned $187,6 million domestically and $191.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office gross of $381.5 million against a $180 million production budget before prints and advertising, according to The Numbers. In addition, the film earned an 88% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 350 reviews and a 93% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score based on 10,000-plus verified user ratings. Rated PG-13, Thunderbolts* will be released on digital streaming on July 1.

Ironheart Premiere Sparks Familiar Backlash Pattern

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 23: Dominique Thorne attends the Ironheart fan event at El Capitan ... More Theatre on June 23, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor Disney) On June 24, 2025, Disney released Ironheart, its newest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), on Disney+. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics for its first three episodes, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a fresh score of 72%, fans have given the show lower scores on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, with Ironheart debuting with a rotten fan score of 32%. However, there is one caveat that needs to be addressed: the negative fan score was posted before the show was even released. Disney is no Stranger to Backlash Disney's latest properties, particularly those with inclusive content and castings, are no stranger to targeted negative ratings and disparaging commentary, with much of the content on platforms like YouTube aimed directly at the actors. When analyzing recent Marvel and Disney releases, a pattern of review-bombing and targeted criticism emerges. In 2022, Ms. Marvel faced early negative reviews on IMDb, with several one-star ratings appearing before the series premiere had finished rolling out. Similarly, Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, also airing in 2022, sparked controversy, with actress Moses Ingram becoming the target of coordinated attacks, prompting public support from Disney and Ewan McGregor, who played the titular character. More recently, in 2023, the release of The Little Mermaid featuring Halle Bailey, a Black woman, as Ariel was also the subject of review bombing, leading IMDb to filter out non-genuine reviews and issue a formal statement on the matter. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 23: Shea Couleé attends the Ironheart fan event at El Capitan Theatre ... More on June 23, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for Disney) Shea Couleé, of RuPaul's Drag Race fame, joins the cast of Ironheart as Slug, a bold drag queen and hacker. Couleé, who is no stranger to how passionate and sometimes misguided fandom can be from her own experience on reality TV, has faced online attacks centered around anti-drag and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments. Some people have said 'no one asked for this' about a prominent drag performer appearing on the show, despite Marvel Comics creating a character partly based on Couleé and several other drag queens back in 2019. What Happens Next? It's no secret that review bombing has become the go-to tactic for online actors to attack projects with female, non-white, and queer leads and cast members. While those making these criticisms may claim that they are allowed to dislike shows like Ironheart, and they are right, they are free not to enjoy an IP just because its story and cast are diverse. However, they go far beyond simply disliking the show. Saying that the show is bad based on the trailer, hearsay, or internal biases that exist outside of the show, before it's even aired, isn't just disliking it; that's discomfort with the mere existence of inclusion. Now that Ironheart has officially made its debut, a more nuanced depiction of its reception is available. The previous 32% fan score has been updated to an average score of 60%, indicating that it still falls on the lower side for Disney+ and MCU content. However, it still presents an overall solid and favorable view in comparison to its score before its debut. While the review bombed scores still weigh down the newer one, it highlights that even when a diverse cast is exceptional or even just 'good enough,' they must still contend with viewpoints and opinions that have already been formed, even before their proverbial stage has been set.
