White Sox acquire INF Gage Workman from Cubs
April 26 - The Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Gage Workman from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon for cash considerations.
The 25-year-old rookie posted three hits in 14 at-bats this season before the Cubs designated him for assignment Wednesday. To make room on the active roster, the White Sox designated veteran infielder Nick Maton for assignment.
The Cubs picked up the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Workman during MLB's Rule 5 draft in December. They were enticed by Workman's .280 batting average, 18 homers and 89 RBIs in 126 games last season at Double-A for the Detroit Tigers.
Workman collected one double and two RBIs in nine games for the Cubs. He appeared at third base seven times and shortstop twice.
The 28-year-old Maton played in 23 of the White Sox's 26 games this season and produced a .173/.295/.327 slash line that featured home runs on March 30 and April 1. He was on a three-game hitting streak.
The trade was the second between the White Sox and Cubs in the last five months. The Cubs sent catcher Matt Thaiss to the White Sox in December for cash.

June 29 - Kyle Teel went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and the Chicago White Sox took the three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants with a 5-2 win on Sunday. White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon, out since June 3 because of a back strain, gave up one run on three hits, walked three and struck out four in three innings in his return. Justin Verlander was effective through six frames, with one run on five hits and two walks. He fanned three for the Giants, who have dropped five of six. Down by one in the seventh inning, Chicago took advantage of Verlander's exit to take a 5-2 lead. Mike Tauchman and Chase Meidroth each singled off reliever Erik Miller (4-1), with Austin Slater pinch-running for Tauchman. After the pair advanced on a groundout, the Giants swapped Miller for Ryan Walker, who walked Miguel Vargas to load the bases. Teel's double scored Slater and Meidroth to make it 3-2. Then, with Lenyn Sosa at the plate, a balk by Walker allowed Vargas to come in for a 4-2 advantage, and Sosa singled to drive in Teel. San Francisco threatened in the top of the eighth against reliever Tyler Gilbert (2-1) when they had the bases loaded with one out, but Heliot Ramos grounded into a double play to end the inning. The visitors broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth off reliever Jordan Leasure. Rafael Devers and Wilmer Flores each walked, and Mike Yastrzemski singled to load the bases. Leasure gave up another walk to Willy Adames, pushing Devers in to make it 2-1. The White Sox took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Tauchman led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on Andrew Benintendi's sacrifice fly. June 29 - While the Cubs' seven-run fourth inning laid the foundation for an easy 12-3 road victory over the host Houston Astros on Saturday, how Chicago was able to set up its bullpen for the series rubber match on Sunday was tied to the opener. Veteran right-hander Chris Flexen worked four shutout innings of relief after the Cubs fell into a seven-run deficit on Friday and his performance enabled Chicago to preserve their bullpen for the final two games of the series. The blowout victory on Saturday, combined with what Flexen produced in the opener, leaves the Cubs with their high-leverage relievers available for the finale. "In your bullpen, the guys are connected to each other," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. "Chris made somebody else more effective (Saturday and Sunday), and I think that's a big deal. "There's no statistic for that, there's no metric, there's no analytics for that. He made our team better (Saturday), he made a particular player better, and that's in addition to throwing four scoreless innings." Right-hander Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.47 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Cubs on Sunday. Taillon has dropped back-to-back starts after winning five consecutive outings through mid-June, recording a 14.63 ERA and .379 opponent batting average in those outings. He allowed a season-high eight runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over a season-low-tying four innings in an 8-7 road loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Taillon is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in five career starts against his hometown Astros. Left-hander Framber Valdez (8-4, 2.88) has the starting assignment for the Astros in the rubber match. Despite tossing seven scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, Valdez had his streak of six consecutive starts with a winning decision snapped when he did not factor into the decision of a 1-0 home victory. However, Valdez remains unbeaten over his last nine starts (7-0 with a 1.89 ERA) with 65 strikeouts over 62 innings. The Astros are 9-0 in those games. Valdez has faced the Cubs once previously. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in four innings but did not factor into the decision of a 6-4 win on May 15, 2023. Given their spate of injuries to starting pitchers, the Astros sorely need veteran right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. to serve as a reliable member of the rotation for the second half of the season. McCullers returned from a 15-day stint on the injured list and allowed eight runs on seven hits and four walks while recording one strikeout and only 10 outs. He threw 79 pitches. It marked the eighth start of the season for McCullers, who missed the previous two seasons with injuries. With right-hander Hunter Brown and Valdez the only experienced options currently in the rotation, the Astros are hopeful that McCullers can stay healthy and return to past form. Kyle Tucker slugs Cubs over Astros
June 29 - Kyle Tucker drilled a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning, the third homer slugged by the Chicago Cubs in that frame en route to a 12-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game interleague series. Tucker finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs in his second game against his former club. He spent seven seasons with the Astros before his offseason trade to the Cubs, and he made his presence felt as Chicago set up a series rubber match with a dominant performance. A half-inning after Astros rookie Cam Smith, acquired as part of the package that landed Tucker in Chicago, smacked his second home run of the series, the Cubs responded resoundingly to the 2-1 deficit Smith created with his two-run shot off Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (5-3). Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (1-3) appeared to have steadied the ship following a rocky top of the first when he walked in a run and threw 27 pitches, including 18 for balls. McCullers threw 12 consecutive balls during one stretch in the first inning but retired the Cubs in order in the second and third, and returned for the fourth with a one-run lead in his possession. That lead was short-lived. Michael Busch and Nico Hoerner clubbed back-to-back homers off McCullers to push the Cubs to a 3-2 lead. McCullers, who retired eight consecutive batters after his bases-loaded walk to Busch resulted in a 1-0 deficit, did not escape the fourth. McCullers departed after Seiya Suzuki tripled to left-center, and allowed eight runs on seven hits and four walks with one strikeout over 3 1/3 innings. Suzuki (2-for-5) added his 22nd home run in the top of the eighth. Dansby Swanson went 3-for-4 with a walk. Busch finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
