Five fights Dana White can make for Ilia Topuria after epic UFC 317 KO, including Paddy Pimblett grudge match

ILIA TOPURIA is the new king of the UFC's lightweight division. The Georgian-born Spaniard became only the TENTH fighter in the history of MMA's premier promotion to hold titles in two weight classes last weekend in the main event of UFC 317 in Las Vegas . 8 Ilia Topuria knocked out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 to claim the vacant lightweight title Credit: REUTERS 8 The Georgian-born Spaniard became a two-weight world champion with victory over Oliveira Credit: REUTERS 8 The world is Topuria's oyster following his historic victory Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 'El Matador' claimed the vacant lightweight title with a blistering first-round KO of former champion Attention has already turned to who the 28-year-old will fight in his maiden defence of the 155lbs throne, which he'll no doubt be hoping will take place in his adopted homeland of Spain. And SunSport is on hand with five fighters the new fan favourite could face in his next outing. Paddy Pimblett Given their long-standing beef, which stemmed from social media comments Pimblett made about Georgians, this fight is an absolute no-brainer. The pair are currently the two biggest names in the stacked division, so pitting them together, especially when they're both in red-hot form, makes sense. The build-up to this one would be box office, especially after their UFC supremo Dana White has, however, already revealed he's not keen on pitting the pair against one another next . But the demand for this fight, the biggest the promotion can make at the moment in time, is white hot. Islam Makhachev Watch jacked Ilia Topuria complete epic UFC 317 body transformation after ditching crash diet to lose over 40lbs Topuria, of course, moved up from featherweight in February to pursue a champion-versus-champion with pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev. Makhchev, as we all know, ended up begrudgingly vacating the 155lbs belt to pursue welterweight gold once former training partner Belal Muhammad lost the belt to Jack Della Maddalena. The Dagestani destroyer is understood to harbour ambitions of reclaiming the belt he won in October 2022. It would make for a fantastic storyline if Makhachev were to win gold at 170lbs and drop back down to 155lbs to try to reclaim what was once his in a super-fight fans are still pining for. 8 Arman Tsarukyan The Armenian, of course, was set to challenge Makhachev for the belt in January before a freak back injury less than 48 hours before fight night scuppered the bout. Tsarukyan, who is on a four-fight win streak, weighed in as the backup fighter for the main event. So it would make sense for him to be in the running to be Topuria's first opponent for his reign as king of the lightweights. 8 Arman Tsarukyan weighed in as the backup fighter for UFC 317's main event so is in the title mix Credit: GETTY Justin Gaethje He may only be riding a one-fight win streak, and just over a year removed from a brutal KO at the hands of Max Holloway, but there is a case for Gaethje getting the title shot. He did the UFC brass a favour by agreeing to defend the BMF belt against Holloway at UFC 300 following back-to-back wins of Rafael Fiziev and The promotion threw a boatload of cash at Gaethje in order to jazz up their tri-centennial card and his decision to take the fight cost him dearly. Doing him a solid and giving him a third crack at undisputed lightweight gold at Topuria is the least the UFC could do. 8 Justin Gaethje is holding out for a tite shot and will retire if he doesn't get one Credit: GETTY Max Holloway Although Topuria became the first man to crack Holloway's chin in his first and final featherweight title defence, there is still some interest in a rematch between the pair. Holloway cut a drained figure in their fight as he was returning to the weight class having filled out his frame to face Gaethje in their BMF bout at UFC 300. Read more on the Irish Sun The weight cut could've played a role in his chin finally giving out, although Topuria does carry insane power in both hands. Either way, should Holloway win his trilogy fight with Poirier next month in emphatic fashion, the appetite for a rematch will likely be there. 8 A rematch with Max Holloway could potentially happen down the line for Ilia Topuria Credit: GETTY

Lions team named as big injury blow confirmed and Irish pair make first start

Andy Farrell admits Tomos Williams will be sorely missed by the British and Irish Lions after being ruled out of the tour of Australia due to a severe hamstring injury. Williams, one of just two Welshmen selected by the Lions, is set to journey back home on Monday following Farrell's announcement that the injury sustained while nailing his second try against Western Force on Saturday will keep him off the pitch for the "medium to long term". In light of Williams' departure, Ben White has been called up from the Scotland squad in New Zealand to step in, with his arrival scheduled for Monday, alongside Blair Kinghorn who's now freed up after contributing to Toulouse's triumph in the Top 14 final. The situation marks a twist of fate for Williams, whose performances thus far had earned him a glowing reputation and placed him in the running for a spot against the Wallabies; he leaves behind a tour where he shone significantly, rendering him the previous season's Gallagher Premiership player par excellence. "It's shocking news for us all. We're not just going to miss an outstanding player – he played unbelievably well and it was some try that he was actually injured by," lamented Farrell. "We're also going to miss the bloke. We have only been together for a few weeks now but his character is everything you want to have in your group on a Lions tour. He's very popular and that makes it a little bit tougher. "Ben will be devastated for Tomos, like we all are. But at the same time, he's super excited. "He obviously had ambition to get into the squad – as did many others who didn't get selected – so now he gets his chance." Williams' absence is somewhat mitigated by Jamison Gibson-Park's comeback from a glute issue, which will see him make his Lions debut against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Wednesday. Gibson-Park will join forces with Finn Russell at half-back – a duo that was tipped to be first-choice to face the Wallabies prior to the tour. Full-back Hugo Keenan and substitute lock James Ryan are slated for their inaugural outings for the touring party after overcoming their calf and quad injuries respectively. Lions skipper Maro Itoje is back in the second row for the clash, following a rest during the 54-7 thrashing of the Force, teaming up with Ollie Chessum in the engine room. The match against the Reds marks the start of a frenzied schedule of four matches in 11 days before the initial Test against the Wallabies, also held in Brisbane, on 19 July. "Here we go now. This is proper touring. Games are coming thick and fast, so this is the exciting part of the tour for us," Farrell commented. "We've been outlining to the lads what the weeks are going to look like – not much training, actually, just out there on the field and plenty of mental preparation. "But if you ask any player, what would they rather do? Be involved in big games, playing for the Lions, or training every day? I know which I'd rather do. "We see it as a great opportunity for ourselves to be fast-tracking our ambition, our potential as a team." Lions: Hugo Keenan, Tommy Freeman, Huw Jones, Bundee Aki, Duhan van der Merwe, Finn Russell, Jamison Gibson-Park, Jack Conan, Jac Morgan, Tom Curry, Ollie Chessum, Maro Itoje (captain), Will Stuart, Ronan Kelleher, Andrew Porter. Replacements: Luke Cowan-Dickie, Ellis Genge, Finlay Bealham, James Ryan, Ben Earl, Alex Mitchell, Fin Smith, Garry Ringrose.

Lions tour: Keenan, Gibson-Park to get first starts against Queensland Reds

Ireland's fullback Hugo Keenan and scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park will get their first taste of action on the Lions tour in Wednesday's match against the Queensland Reds. Lions coach Andy Farrell again rung the changes in his team for the second tour match in Australia against the Reds at Brisbane's Lang Park. The Irish pair, who were both struggling with injury niggles, feature in a backline that will again be steered by flyhalf Finn Russell. Keenan, who had been carrying a calf injury in recent weeks, said the plan was always for him to return for the Reds game. READ MORE 'It's been pretty smooth sailing ... and now just excited to get stuck in and get out there with the lads,' the 29-year-old told reporters. Bundee Aki, Jack Conan, Ronan Kelleher and Andrew Porter are also named in the starting line-up, with Finlay Bealham, James Ryan and Garry Ringrose named among the replacements. Conan, the only specialist number eight in the squad, replaces young Englishman Henry Pollock in a back row completed by Welsh openside Jac Morgan and blindside Tom Curry. Skipper Maro Itoje, who led the Lions in their loss to Argentina in Dublin on June 20th, returns to the second row in partnership with Ollie Chessum at the heart of the new-look pack after hooker Dan Sheehan captained the side against the Force. However, the Lions have confirmed Welsh scrumhalf Tomos Williams suffered a tour-ending hamstring injury last weekend. Williams sustained the injury scoring his second try in the 54-7 victory over Western Force in Perth last Saturday and will be replaced in the squad by Scotland's Ben White. Farrell said the loss of the Gloucester player robbed the group of an outstanding player. 'We've only been together for a few weeks now but his character is everything for a Lions tour you want to have in your group,' Farrell told a press conference on Monday. 'He's very popular amongst the group so that makes it a little bit tougher for all.' Farrell said Williams's replacement White and fullback Blair Kinghorn would join the camp later on Monday. In Kinghorn's case, his celebrations with Toulouse had been cut short to join the Lions, days after helping the French team win the Top 14 title.
