Samridhi@Kochi diversifies operations with canteen vertical
The inauguration of its canteen at the Greater Cochin Development Authority office here on Monday was the first step in that direction. Samridhi@Kochi has already been offering catering services, including at fairs and functions organised by the State government.
'The idea is to introduce the canteen model, and going forward, we expect to get more inquiries in this vertical,' said P.A. Ajith, District Programme Manager, Kudumbashree (Micro Enterprises). Kochi, being a commercial hub and home to numerous offices, Kudumbashree remains confident that the brand Samridhi will be able to make quick strides. Having a central kitchen at the Samridhi@Kochi budget hotel near the North railway station also helps.
The introduction of the canteen vertical is expected to add another 20 to 25 jobs to Samridhi's 110-strong current workforce. Women associated with Samridhi get a minimum monthly pay of ₹20,000, which touches the ₹40,000- ₹45,000 range based on various grades and allowances.
Samridhi's diversification is not restricted to the canteen service alone. 'We are in talks with the Railway to sell Samridhi-branded food inside the South and North railway stations and trains, besides putting up kiosks outside these stations. We are also exploring the scope of accepting online-based orders and even door delivery of food,' said Mr. Ajith.
When Samridhi@Kochi started in 2021, it offered meals for ₹10 with the State government offering another ₹10 as a subsidy. Though the government stopped that subsidy in August 2023, meals continue to be effectively sold for ₹20, notwithstanding the surge in the prices of essential items since then. This has been made possible by including more items in the menu at reasonable prices and thus facilitating cross-subsidy.
Samridhi@Kochi sells 2,500 to 3,000 meals a day and is now open around the clock. The basic principle is to offer quality food at reasonable prices while generating jobs with decent income.

SEZ rent disputes won't come under Rent Control Act, rules Kerala High Court
KOCHI: In a significant ruling, the Kerala High Court has held that rent-related disputes involving units operating within Special Economic Zones (SEZs) cannot be brought before regular rent control courts. It quashed proceedings initiated by the developer of SmartCity-Kochi before the Munsiff Court, Ernakulam (Rent Control), ruling that such matters must be dealt with under the SEZ Act, 2005. A division bench of Justices A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and P M Manoj allowed a petition filed by Musthafa & Almana International Consultants, a firm functioning in SmartCity-Kochi, challenging the maintainability of the rent control case filed by the developer, SmartCity (Kochi) Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, promoted by Dubai Holding. The lower court had accepted the developer's petition under the Kerala Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1965, alleging non-payment of over Rs 61 lakh in sub-lease rent and charges. But the High Court observed that the lease agreement between the parties was an outcome of the petitioner's SEZ approval and could not be treated as a regular landlord-tenant relationship. 'The remedy chosen by the developer was not one that was available to it in law,' the court said, adding that the issue was integral to the broader question of whether the petitioner continued to qualify as an 'entrepreneur' under the SEZ Act. If the unit has violated lease terms, the court noted, the developer must approach the SEZ Development Commissioner for cancellation of approval. Only then can eviction proceedings be initiated under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act. The judgment comes at a time when Dubai Holding, one of the main promoters of SmartCity-Kochi, has announced plans to exit the project, and the Kerala government is exploring a takeover of the venture in Kakkanad. 'We've argued from the start that this isn't a Rent Control case,' said Musthafa Zafeer O V, founder of the petitioner firm. 'The High Court agreed and dismissed the proceedings initiated before the Munsiff Court, Ernakulam,' he said.

Italy Fines Armani For 'Misleading Ethical' Statements
Italy's competition watchdog said Friday it fined luxury goods giant Giorgio Armani 3.5 million euros ($4 million) for misleading consumers over dangerous conditions for workers making its bags and accessories. The watchdog sanctioned the Milan-based fashion group for "misleading ethical and social responsibility statements that were at odds with the actual working conditions found at suppliers and subcontractors". "The companies made untruthful ethical and social responsibility statements that were not presented in a clear, specific, accurate, and unambiguous manner," it added in a statement. It said Armani outsourced a "large part" of its leather bag and accessory production to suppliers who relied on subcontractors. The watchdog cited cases in which "safety devices had been removed from the machinery to increase production capacity, thereby posing a serious risk to the safety and health of workers." "Hygiene and sanitary conditions were inadequate, while workers were often employed totally or partially 'off the books'." The watchdog judged that "respect for workers' rights and health did not correspond to the ethical and social responsibility statements" issued by the company. It said the brand was aware of the situation, "which seriously harmed the workers who produced Armani-branded leather bags and accessories". The watchdog did not say where the workers were based. Giorgio Armani slammed the ruling, expressing "disappointment and bitterness" in a statement. It said it would appeal the decision and vowed that it has "always operated with the utmost fairness and transparency towards consumers".

Kudumbashree will launch special gift hampers for Onam
Kudumbashree will launch special gift hampers on the occasion of Onam which can be ordered through its e-commerce platform Pocketmart. A total of 5,000 gift hampers consisting of nine essential products for Onam will be available at a cost of ₹799 each. Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh said that 50,000 Onam kits with same products will be made available in the open market. Speaking after inaugurating a media workshop on Kudumbashree in the capital on Thursday, the Minister said that Kudumbashree will also be running Onam trade melas in all district centres as well as at the panchayat-level as part of its market intervention efforts during the Onam season. Training for women He said that skill training will be provided to three lakh women as part steps towards increasing women's participation in the labour force from 20% to 50%. Having almost achieved its founding aim of poverty alleviation, the focus of the Kudumbashree now will be on raising the income of women.
