Vivo launches affordable new Y-Series smartphones
As South Africans continue to look for more affordable smartphones that rival flagship models, Vivo has introduced its latest Y Series lineup: the Y29, Y19s Pro, and Y04.
In February, Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi took steps to accelerate access to more affordable smart devices and smartphones.
Competition
The entry-level and midrange smartphone market has become fiercely competitive as tech companies pack innovative features, including artificial intelligence enhancement, into phones that are affordable.
Huawei, Samsung, Oppo, Honour and Xiaomi are operating in a saturated market with all wanting the largest piece of the South African consumer market pie.
With its latest series of devices, Vivo claims an industry-first seven-star quality promise, designed to give users peace of mind with robust protection and dependable performance across the Y Series range.

Y29
While Y29 leads with the full suite of premium protections, the Y19s Pro and Y04 are also equipped with durability and performance features.
The flagship of the Y Series, the Y29, features a slim 6500mAh BlueVolt battery. It has a reinforced anti-drop armour design, a 120Hz display, and is powered by the Snapdragon 685.
Y19s
The Y19s Pro features IP64 resistance, dual 300% audio booster speakers. Vivo said with 256GB of internal storage, 'there's plenty of room for apps, media, and memories.'

Y04
Vivo claims the Y04 is set to raise the bar in the entry-level segment with the largest storage capacity in its price range – a generous 256GB of internal storage.
The Y04 features IP64 dust and water resistance, a long-lasting 5500mAh battery.
'With the new Y Series, Vivo is not just launching affordable smartphones – it's introducing a new benchmark for performance, durability, and peace of mind in this segment,' Vivo said.

'We'll never allow it': EFF vows to 'stop' Starlink in SA
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have doubled down on the rejection of Starlink being granted a licence to operate in South Africa. This comes after Elon Musk's internet satellite service company is reportedly planning to 'work around' the country's Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policies, which require a stake in local shareholding for foreign investors. Musk has repeatedly slammed the transformative legislation as a 'racist law', he claims discriminates against him as he is 'not black'. Addressing parliament on Friday, 11 July, EFF spokesperson Sinawe Thambo rejected Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi's plan to introduce equity equivalent investment programmes (EEIPs) as an alternative to transformative legislation like BEE. He said: 'This is a proposal we've objected to because the so-called alignment would require an amendment to legislation. And can't be achieved through a ministerial policy directive.' Elon Musk's plan to launch Starlink in South Africa has been met by heavy opposition. Images via X: @starlink Referring to Starlink creator Elon Musk, Thambo continued: 'We will never allow Starlink, which has weaponised misinformation and captured the White House, to erode US and South African diplomatic relations in order to ease business access in South Africa. 'We view that as economic and diplomatic terrorism. Even if Starlink were to meet equity equivalence requirements, there's a security threat that it poses. That means it must never be allowed to operate in South Africa. And we will never allow it to do so'. In May, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi gazetted a policy direction for his department on EEIPs, which are considered 'alternatives' to transformative legislation. Without mentioning Starlink, the minister claimed that the policy would 'attract investment,' specifically in operating licensing. The minister revealed that current legislation for foreign investments 'did not allow companies to contribute to transformation goals in ways other than traditional ownership'. Last month, Business Day reported that Starlink, which falls under SpaceX, is looking to invest over R2 billion in South Africa as part of its prospective deal to operate in the country. The internet satellite company will reportedly finance infrastructure to support the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is made up of 16 countries. The move is thought to be a way to 'work around' local BEE policies, which require foreign investors to hold 30% of the local shares. Traffic department teams up with Home Affairs to tackle licence backlog
Traffic department teams up with Home Affairs to tackle licence backlog The Public Servants' Association (PSA) has welcomed the Department of Transport's (DoT) move to enlist the help of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to address the country's mounting driver's licence backlog. With a reported 602 831 licence cards outstanding, and new applications arriving daily, the DoT has struggled to meet demand with its single, 25-year-old, printing machine. ALSO READ: Driver's licence validity extension mulled, demerit system to go ahead The partnership aims to speed up the process and bring much-needed relief to thousands of South Africans awaiting their driver's licence cards, with many waiting since early in the year. The PSA said it has long called for collaboration and better use of government resources to improve service delivery. The organisation praised this joint initiative as a step in the right direction, one that prioritises public needs while restoring confidence in government efficiency. 'This collaborative effort is commendable and shows a commitment to alleviating the pressure faced by citizens, many of whom rely on their licences for daily transport and employment,' said the PSA in a statement. The association also urged other departments facing similar challenges to take note and follow suit in prioritising the public interest. However, with the additional workload expected to fall on Home Affairs staff, the PSA emphasised the importance of fair treatment for workers, calling on both departments to manage the situation seamlessly, ensuring employees are not exploited in the process. The PSA concluded by thanking the DHA for its swift response and co-operation, expressing hope that the partnership would significantly reduce waiting times and improve overall service delivery. Consumer Commission warns South Africans after revealing rogue companies
The Consumer Commission published the names of suppliers who do not adhere to the Consumer Protection Act. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has published a list of rogue suppliers who disappeared without a trace after accepting money from consumers and failing to deliver the goods or services. It urged South Africans to stay vigilant and ensure that they do not do business with them. A spokesperson for the NCC says in many cases, these suppliers vanished from their known addresses, while some shut down their websites, making it impossible for consumers to contact them for redress. 'Consumers filed complaints with the NCC alleging that they cannot obtain redress as the suppliers are unresponsive. The NCC's efforts to contact these suppliers to facilitate redress for consumers also failed and the preliminary assessment indicates that these suppliers either closed down or never existed.' ALSO READ: Droom Troue fined R250 000 for turning brides' wedding dreams into nightmares Disappearing suppliers attempting to evade law She says the NCC views this conduct as a deliberate attempt to evade the law and avoid accountability in terms of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). The purpose and policy of the CPA include protecting consumers from unconscionable, unfair, unreasonable, unjust or improper trade descriptions and deceptive, misleading, unfair, or fraudulent conduct. The CPA also mandates that suppliers provide consumers with their addresses and communication channels to reach those suppliers. 'Consumers are urged to exercise caution when transacting with these suppliers. Suppliers who believe they were erroneously listed can contact the NCC. Meanwhile, the NCC appointed tracing agents to locate these suppliers.'
