LONDON: England last month experienced its warmest June since records began in 1884, while the UK recorded its second-warmest June over the same period, the meteorological office said on Tuesday.
The announcement of the provisional figures also coincided with Britain recording its hottest day of the year so far, as much of Europe swelters from an early summer heatwave.
The mercury hit 33.6 degrees Celcius Tuesday in southeast England, topping the previous hottest day on June 21.
The Met Office said England saw a record mean temperature of 16.9 degrees Celcius (62 degrees Fahrenheit) for June. The UK's mean temperature last month was only surpassed in June 2023, it added.
Last month had two heatwaves in parts of England and Wales, which recorded its third warmest June.
It followed the UK -- otherwise known for its damp and cool weather -- also experiencing its warmest and sunniest spring in over a century in 2025.
"Past studies have shown it is virtually certain that human influence has increased the occurrence and intensity of extreme heat events such as this," Met Office climate scientist Amy Doherty said.

On June 30, temperatures soared above 32 degrees Celcius, with Wimbledon recording its hottest ever opening day and implementing a heat rule to protect players' health.
Amber heat alerts -- which warn of a risk to vulnerable people and pressure on the health service -- were in place across parts of England.
The UK also saw higher than average sunshine across all four of its nations in June, according to the latest figures.
A Met Office study last month said the country could experience more extreme and prolonged heat due to human-driven climate change.
Around the world, scientists say the increase in greenhouse gas emissions as a result of burning fossil fuels is driving freak weather events.

Himachal Pradesh travel alert: Flash floods, cloudbursts hit Mandi; what travellers should know

Himachal Pradesh is experiencing heavy rainfall and an intense monsoon devastation. The district of Mandi is reported as the worst-hit region in the state with heavy rainfall for more than the last 48 hours has triggered a series of cloudbursts and flash floods. Large-scale rescue operations are underway. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mandi is under a red alert. Continued rainfall is predicted across Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, and Sirmaur. As per local reports, Mandi has experienced 10 different cloudburst incidents which have claimed lives of at least 10 people. More than 30 individuals have gone missing under the sad circumstances. In addition to these regions, Karsog, Dharampur, Gohar, and Jogindernagar have also come under the wrath of monsoon rains. Rivers in the state including the Beas, Suketi, and Jayuni Khad are overflowing. One of the worst-affected regions was the Pandoh Dam, which was forced to release 157,000 cusecs of water. Because of torrential rain, over 259 roads across Himachal Pradesh remain blocked, including 129 in Mandi alone. The authorities, with help of the National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF and SDRF), have evacuated more than 300 people from flooded regions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Schools and colleges across Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra districts remain closed. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has closely looked into the present situation. He has directed teams to prioritise rescue operations and accelerate aid distribution. He said, 'Our first priority is to ensure the safety of our citizens and restore essential services.' The minister has also requested people to avoid travel to high-risk zones, especially riverbanks and landslide-prone regions. The IMD has predicted continued moderate to heavy rainfall in the region till July 8. Flash flood warnings remain in effect, and travelers are strongly advised to postpone non-essential journeys to and through affected districts. The natural events are a reminder of the Himalayan region's vulnerability during the monsoon. As the state starts recovery efforts, the government faces the challenge of rebuilding amid continued weather-related issues. Europe Sizzles And The Eiffel Tower's Summit Closes

Europe sizzled in its first major heat wave of the summer on Tuesday, as Barcelona recorded its hottest June in over a century and the summit of Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower was closed to visitors. Health warnings remained in effect in several countries. The abnormally hot weather "is exposing millions of Europeans to high heat stress" with temperatures more typical of July and August, said Samantha Burgess of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Spain: Record temperatures Barcelona's Fabra Observatory reported an average temperature for last month of 26 C (78 F), breaking records since the data began in 1914. It said a single-day high of 37.9 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) for June was recorded Monday. Barcelona is usually spared the worst heat in Spain, thanks to its location between hills and the Mediterranean. Ramon Pascual, a delegate for Spain's weather service in Barcelona, told The Associated Press the "very intense heat wave" is clearly linked to global warming. Pascual said inhabitants of the Mediterranean region are not being helped by the rising sea temperatures, which greatly reduce any cooling effects of a nearby body of water. Spain's weather service said recent surface temperatures for the Mediterranean near the Balearic Islands are 5 to 6 degrees Celsius higher than average. Spain's national average for June of 23.6 degrees Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit) was 0.8 C hotter than the previous hottest June in 2017. Madrid was forecast to reach 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit). "We're just surviving," said Miguel Sopera, 63. "At night it's impossible due to the terrible heat." France: Closed schools Temperatures were forecast to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Paris. National weather agency Meteo-France placed several departments under the highest red alert. More than 1,300 schools were partially or fully closed. Visitors to the Eiffel Tower without tickets were told to postpone their visits as the summit was closed until Thursday for "everyone's comfort and safety." Climate experts warn that future summers are likely to be hotter than any recorded to date, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius expected every year by 2100. Italy: A blackout Italy's health ministry said 17 of the country's 27 major cities were experiencing a heat wave. In Florence, where temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) on Tuesday, parts of the city center experienced a blackout following a surge in electricity demand. Backup systems restored power, energy company Enel said. Near Bologna, the 46-year-old owner of a construction company collapsed and died while repaving a school parking lot, state-run RAI reported. An autopsy was being conducted but heat was suspected. The Netherlands: Water gun fight In the Dutch town of Soest, first responders said they were bringing a fire hose to an evening water gun fight. "Bring your water pistol and swimming clothes with you, because you're guaranteed to get soaked!" the firefighters said on social media. Portugal: A record high The weather service in a statement Monday night confirmed the highest single temperature ever recorded in mainland Portugal for the month of June at 46.6 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) on June 29 in the town of Mora, west of Lisbon. Turkey: Wildfires Firefighters across Turkey tried to contain wildfires that have forced the evacuation of some 50,000 residents for the third consecutive day. Czech Republic: Polar bears Temperatures were expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) by Wednesday in parts of the Czech Republic. The Prague zoo distributed up to 10 metric tons of ice, with special attention given to polar bears. Zoo director Miroslav Bobek said twin brother bears Aleut and Gregor discovered frozen pieces of squid.
