Rare Hulk stretch toy to go under the hammer this month

Excalibur Auctions said the toy is one of only 30 known examples of the original Hulk stretch figure from 1979 known to still exist.
It was produced by renowned toy-maker Denys Fisher (1918-2002) and comes directly from its original owner, who begged his mother for one as a child.
She knew someone who worked for Denys Fisher and was able to purchase one of the first ever off the production line.
The toy will go under the hammer later this month and is expected to sell for up to £5,000.
It comes with its original packaging which bears a handwritten 'number one' on the flap of the box, and is described as being in 'mint' condition having been kept out of the light and upright over the years.
Jonathan Torode, from Excalibur Auctions, said: 'We are thrilled to be able to offer the opportunity to acquire one of the rarest stretch toys in existence.
'Having never been offered on the market before and to be in such good condition and with excellent provenance, renders this the ultimate for collectors.
'We therefore anticipate world-wide interest.'
The Hulk figure was manufactured in Thorp Arch, Wetherby, and was sold in limited quantities only in the UK, through select mail-order catalogues and a handful of shops.
It was originally part of Kenner's 'Stretch Armstrong' line and was later licensed under Denys Fisher in the UK.
Toy maker Fisher, who developed the spirograph, grew up in the Leeds area and later lived in Dumfries and Cumbria.
The Hulk stretch figure was filled with corn syrup to enable it to stretch and was made using the same latex and gel moulds as those used for the Stretch Armstrong figure.
However, its green skin colouring, the Hulk head and the Marvel branding set it apart from the Stretch Armstrong toy.
Excalibur Auctions, which is based in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, said that the Hulk figure comes with its original instructions and has never been offered for sale since it was bought in 1979.
The vibrant yellow packaging has not faded and the original chalk dust on the figure's surface means that it was never shaken off (or played with) post-production, the auction house said.
The figure is still pliable and there is said to be no degradation of the latex 'skin'.
The figure will be offered in the Excalibur Auctions Vintage Toys Diecast Models & Model Railways auction on July 26 with an estimate of £3,000-£5,000.

Superman cast salaries unveiled and highest earner not who fans think

Some of the stars' earning may be lower than fans expect The salaries for the cast of the new Superman film have apparently been revealed and the highest earner may not be the one who fans think. Its release becomes the first in the newly rebooted cinematic universe from DC Studios. Now under the stewardship of James Gunn, who serves as writer and director for the latest release. Gunn is known and celebrated on his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel and it is hoped he can work similar magic for DC's library of characters. ‌ According to the film's synopsis, when Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman's four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it's too late? ‌ The cast sees a brand new actor take on the pressure of becoming not only Clark Kent but also the Man of Steel. Joining him are a whole host of new faces as the hero's allies and adversaries. That includes Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Clark's colleague and love interest Lois Lane. There's also Nathan Fillion from Castle and star of The Rookie as well as The Last of Us breakout star Isabella Merced. as well as The Righteous Gemstones actor Skyler Gisondo. ‌ However, despite taking on the mantle as the titular hero now in cinemas, David Corenswet did not make the most out of his cast members. Instead, it is claimed that British actor Nicholas Hoult, who plays the villainous Lex Luthor took home the most for his part in the film. According to reports, this is because Hoult is already an experienced film star with some star power to his name. Hoult has starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, a number of X-Men movies for Fox, along with The Menu, Clint Eastwood's Juror No. 2, and the recent Nosferatu. ‌ Corenswet and Brosnahan are both currently more well known for their television work. While Corenswet had small roles in Twisters and Pearl, he has starred in The Politician and miniseries We Own This City. Brosnahan featured in the film The Amateur but was the lead role in the award winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. ‌ Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor - $2 million David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent - $750,000 Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane - $750,000 Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardener - $400,000 Edi Gathegi as Mr Terrific - $400,000 Antony Carrigan as Metamorpho - $250,000 Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen - $200,000 Isabala Merced as Hawgirl - $200,000 It is also reported that the top bill cast members or due for extra pay days depending on the film's performance at the box office. However, what the numbers are in relation to that kind of deal is not known. However, Deadline has claimed that the film has already earned more than $40 million. That figure was impressively from previews taking place ahead of the weekend around the world. That means it only accounts for screenings for the Wednesday and Thursday before the title's official release day. Projections have estimated this could mean a taking of around $115 million for the opening weekend.

Sci-fi fans thrilled as 'most underrated show on TV' returns

The long-anticipated third season of Apple TV Plus' latest sci-fi fix premiered on July 11, and fans everywhere are buzzing. Despite its relatively low profile compared to shows like The Last of Us or Game of Thrones, Foundation – which is adapted from Isaac Asimov's landmark saga – has earned a reputation as one of television's 'most underrated' treasures. Season 3 sees a powerful new villain rise, deeper emotional stakes than ever before, and fans are already sharing their excitement online, with some predicting this series will give the show the attention it deserves. Jared Harris, Lou Llobell and Cassian Bilton are amongst the returning cast members from the two previous series. The new series sees The Mule, a powerful mutant who can control minds, threaten Seldon's plan to save humanity. Critics are heavily praising the new series, with season three earning an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score. Nick Schager, from The Daily Beast applauded the show: 'Foundation is television's grandest drama, and it continues to put the rest of its small-screen genre brethren to shame with its momentous, magnificent third season.' Fans are thrilled to have a bingeable sci-fi show back on their screens after the genre has dried up in recent years. X users were quick to applaud the new series with one fan, @thatcoolblknerd saying: '#Foundation is the most underrated show on television.' 'It's crazy how GOOD #Foundation looks compared to some recent Marvel films on a fraction of the budget.' @splashthatcat added. Another fan was quick to share his thoughts, @briandelvecchio, 'The #Foundation Season 3 premiere was really good, I can't wait for the rest of season 3.' Others have had to be reminded of Apple TV's name for underground shows, 'Renewed my Apple TV for #Foundation' @49erscarlos said on X. Mathematician Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) predicts the collapse of the 12,000-year-old Galactic Empire using a science called psychohistory (a mathematical model that forecasts societal behavior on a massive scale). To preserve human knowledge and shorten the dark age to come, Seldon proposes establishing the Foundation at the edge of the galaxy on a planet called Terminus. The Empire, ruled by a trio of cloned emperors (Brother Dawn, Day, and Dusk), views Seldon's predictions as treason. They exile him and his followers to Terminus. Hari is apparently murdered by his own protégé, Raych, but his consciousness lives on in a digital form (a 'ghost' in the Vault). Gaal (a gifted mathematician) and Salvor (warden of Terminus) emerge as key players. Salvor begins experiencing visions and strange powers that hint at deeper forces at play. As a warlike group called the Anacreons threaten Terminus, Salvor thwarts their attack with help from Hari's digital self-marking the success of the First Seldon Crisis. Roughly 100 years after Season 1, the Foundation has become more than a scientific outpost-it's now growing into a religious and economic power, using Hari's teachings as a doctrine. Internal instability grows within the Empire. Brother Day (Lee Pace) plans to break the cloning dynasty by marrying and producing a natural heir – sparking major conflict with Brothers Dusk and Dawn. Gaal Dornick, having been in cryosleep, awakens and discovers she has psychic abilities. She meets her daughter, Salvor Hardin (revealed to be born from a time-travel plot), and together they encounter a group of powerful telepaths called Mentalics. Hari (still present via the Vault) reveals there are actually two Foundations: the one on Terminus and a secret Second Foundation meant to guide humanity from behind the scenes. The final episodes tease the rise of The Mule, a powerful mutant with mind-control abilities, hinting at an existential threat far greater than anything the galaxy has faced. Now you can sit back and enjoy season 3 whilst understanding what is going on… Season three is set 152 years after Season two, catapulting the narrative into a galaxy in flux. The Foundation has risen to power, while the empire weakens – ushering in the dramatic arrival of The Mule, played by Pilou Asbaek, whose psychic might threatens everything. With Hari Seldon and Gaal Dornick in cryosleep, the story shifts to a more faction‑driven chronicle, blending massive space battles with high-stakes mental warfare. The production quality continues to stun audiences, with sprawling cosmic landscapes, intricate costume design, and a score that elevates each scene's tension. More Trending Series regulars Lee Pace and Laura Birn are also receiving praise for their evolving performances, with many commending their performances as the emotional spine of the show. It may not dominate pop culture headlines, but for sci‑fi devotees, this season is a vindication: a high‑concept epic delivered with ambition and heart. With ten episodes streaming weekly until September 12th, now is the moment to catch up on this 'underrated' sci-fi series. Superman director's forgotten film fans called 'best zombie movie ever'

Superman director's forgotten film fans called 'best zombie movie ever' A look at his lesser known films including Battle Royale with adults The DC cinematic universe is set for a reboot as Superman soars back onto the big screen, this time under the direction of filmmaker James Gunn. Gunn and his new studio are aiming to emulate at least some of the success he experienced while working on Marvel projects. However, Gunn's early filmography provides ample evidence as to why he's the right choice for the job. ‌ Throughout his career, Gunn has demonstrated an ability to effortlessly merge genres, from horror to sci-fi and action adventures, always with a sharp focus on visuals and emotionally charged musical moments. While it remains to be seen where Superman and Gunn's future DC titles will rank among his other works, here's a brief rundown of his early films as writer, director or both. ‌ Super Super was shut out by Kick-Ass the year it was released (Image: IFC ) Super featured Rain Wilson, fresh off his fame from The Office, as an average bloke who's had a less than stellar life. He decides to reinvent himself as a superhero and tackle crime when his wife, a recovering addict, leaves him for another man, reports the Mirror. That other man happens to be a drug-dealing Kevin Bacon, complete with a gang of henchmen. Crimson Bolt, lacking any actual superhuman abilities, resorts to brutal violence in his quest to rescue his wife from the clutches of a drug dealer. Article continues below While promoting Superman, Gunn stated that he didn't believe he'd ever made a superhero film before. While some might argue that Super fits the bill, the protagonist doesn't possess any real superpowers. The film is now regarded as a dark cult classic, despite having received mixed reviews when it first came out. It graced some cinema screens in 2010 but was somewhat overshadowed by Kick-Ass, which was released the same year and shared a similar theme of deconstructing the comic book superhero trope. A fan commented: "I love how this movie is messed up and it's exactly why I like it. it's definitely not for everyone. The main characters are sadistic and delusional. While the movie challenges the moral stuff in superhero genre by putting it into the real world context in a sick, disturbing manner, still doesn't take itself too seriously." ‌ Super can be rented on Apple TV and Amazon Video. The Belko Experiment The Belko Experiment is one of Gunn's lesser known films (Image: Orion ) In 2017, Gunn wrote the screenplay for The Belko Experiment during a break from his Marvel commitments. The film aligns with the darker, more violent style of his earlier works. ‌ The plot revolves around eighty Americans trapped in their corporate office as part of a lethal experiment where an unseen voice commands them to kill each other to survive. A viewer remarked: "Underrated film, this idea has been done before but The Belko Experiment executes the movie better than its predecessors in my opinion. Reminds me of Battle Royale but in an office setting with adults." The Belko Experiment is available for streaming on Prime Video. ‌ Dawn of the Dead Fans hail it as one of the best zombie movies (Image: Universal ) Another entry from Gunn's earlier work saw him take on screenwriting duties before eventually stepping behind the camera as director. Following his script work on the live-action Scooby-Doo adaptation (yes, that actually happened), Gunn was commissioned to write the screenplay for a reimagining of a zombie horror classic. Fascinatingly, whilst Gunn penned the 2004 version, it was Zack Snyder - the very filmmaker he would later succeed as the creative figurehead for DC's film universe - who helmed the project. ‌ The plot mirrors that of the original, following survivors of an outbreak that transforms the infected into cannibalistic zombies as they seek sanctuary in a shopping centre. Beyond confronting the walking dead, the group must also contend with internal conflicts. This updated version introduced swifter, more ferocious zombies. One enthusiast described it as an 'instant classic' whilst another declared: "24 years later, still no other film can top this masterpiece. The best zombie film ever created in my opinion." Dawn of the Dead is streaming on Netflix soon. ‌ Guardians of the Galaxy The first Guardians is Gunn's highest rated feature film Numerous comic book enthusiasts and cinema-goers could hardly be blamed for being puzzled when it was revealed this relatively unknown group of characters would receive their own blockbuster. Let alone that Gunn would be the one to bring it to life. However, the filmmaker stunned both audiences and reviewers with his vibrant and humorous cosmic escapade. This picture continues to be Gunn's most acclaimed feature on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a 92% rating despite spawning two follow-ups. Article continues below The Guardians of the Galaxy might have shed their obscurity, but it's important to recall that even among ardent fans, they weren't always household names. Viewing this film, it's completely understandable why James Gunn was chosen to take on Superman and his Justice League comrades. A fan expressed their admiration by saying: "Guardians of the Galaxy is pure Marvel magic packed with humour, heart, stunning visuals, and a killer soundtrack. Every time I rewatch it, my mood instantly lifts. James Gunn turned this into a musical-action masterpiece." Guardians of the Galaxy is streaming on Disney+.
