Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan meets Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav to discuss zoo, Nagar Vans in Sambalpur
Member of Parliament (MP) from Sambalpur, Dharmendra Pradhan, requested the intervention of the Environment Minister in the expansion and upgradation of Sambalpur Zoo to the 'Medium Zoo' category. This expansion would facilitate the induction of new species and the development of educational and research facilities.
He also urged for Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary to get the Tiger Reserve status, which will promote tiger conservation in the region and give a boost to tourism.
Dharmendra Pradhan also requested the Environment Minister Yadav's attention to the urgent need for the development of Nagar Vans in the industrial belt of Sambalpur-Jharsuguda-Brajrajnagar, the coal belt of Angul-Dhenkanal, and the heat-affected region of Titilagarh-Bolangir of Odisha under the Nagar Van Yojana (NVY).
In alignment with the Government's vision of 'One Earth, Many Efforts,' as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the establishment of Nagar Vans in urban clusters is aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability and community well-being.
In June 2022, PM Modi launched the 'Lifestyle for the Environment - LiFE Movement' with the vision of 'One Earth, Many Efforts'. The Nagar Van Yojana was launched by the Ministry for Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2020, with an aim to develop 400 Nagar Vans and 200 Nagar Vatikas. The objective of the scheme is to enhance the tree outside forests and green cover, enhancement of biodiversity and ecological benefits to the urban and peri-urban areas.
In September 2024, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted the creation of 3,776 hectares of Nagar Van and Vatikas under the scheme in 64 National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) cities with Rs 142 crore sanctioned, encouraging other cities to utilise this scheme to develop green spaces. President's rule extended in Manipur till February 2026

India proposes Alwar's Siliserh Lake as Ramsar site
Alwar: Union minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav Thursday proposed that Alwar's renowned Siliserh Lake should be designated as a Ramsar site. Yadav, Lok Sabha MP from Alwar, forwarded the proposal during a meeting with Musonda Mumba, secretary general of Wetland Convention, during Ramsar COP-15, currently underway in Zimbabwe. Representing India at the event, Yadav underscored the cultural and spiritual significance of Siliserh Lake and said its designation as a Ramsar site would grant Siliserh Lake international recognition as a wetland, enhance conservation efforts, and provide opportunities for sustainable development and international cooperation. With 91 Ramsar sites, India now has the most number of Ramsar sites in Asia. Recently, Khichan in Rajasthan's Phalodi district, and Menar in Udaipur, were declared Ramsar sites. India has also proposed the inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh's Glow Lake, Bihar's Gogabil Lake, Gujarat's Chhari Dhand Wetland Reserve, and Gosabara Wetland in the Ramsar list. This increase in Ramsar sites reflects India's commitment to wetland conservation and management. The growth in Ramsar sites, initiatives like 'Amrit Dharohar', and the recognition of wetland cities demonstrate India's emphasis on wetland preservation.

Delhi's vehicles equal that of Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai
This is a representative image (Pic credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: At more than 1.5 crore, the number of registered vehicles in Delhi matches the combined total of registered vehicles in the three metropolitan cities of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, road transport ministry data has revealed, highlighting the immense pressure on Delhi's roads. This problem of congestion gets aggravated in the national capital as lakhs of vehicles enter Delhi every day from neighbouring cities in the National Capital Region (NCR). In a written reply, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday that the four mega cities have nearly 3.1 crore vehicles, with nearly 90% of these (more than 2.7 crore) being private vehicles. Delhi accounts for nearly 52% of the private vehicles registered in these cities, the data show. It also said that Delhi-NCR has been at the forefront of adopting BS emission norms when compared to pan-India timelines. Nearly 85 lakh vehicles in the entire region comply with BS-VI norms.
