Now, Eskom has detailed why the province with no loadshedding is able to perform the way it does. And the discrepancy between it and other provinces. Eskom introduced loadshedding as a system-wide measure when there's insufficient capacity to meet overall electricity demand, says the utility. In so doing, it is able to protect important infrastructural equipment. Therefore preventing more extensive outages – like substation fires, which are common in Gauteng – by temporarily preventing overloading.
Moreover, Eskom's group executive Monde Bala, says illegal electricity connections, meter bypassing, theft/vandalism also contributes to overloading the network. Combine that with typically higher consumption during winter, when consumers use heaters and geysers to keep warm, and you have higher chances of loadshedding. 15 Johannesburg suburbs will experience a power outage this month. As you can see from the Eskom graphic (up top), Gauteng is 30% more likely to suffer from loadshedding than Western Cape. Likewise, Limpopo and Mphumalanga are 22% higher. Which is ironic considering this is the heart land of South Africa's coal-fired energy reserves.
Meanwhile the province with no loadshedding is working hard to draw energy sustainably and remove itself from the Eskom grid all together. In response, Eskom says it will install 7.2-million 'smart meters' to help reduce losses and enable safer 'loadlimiting' across the country. In turn, theft and vandalism remain significant threats to the continuous supply of electricity in South Africa. Between April 2024 and February 2025, Eskom says infrastructure vandalism and theft cost R221 million. Thankfully, this is down from R271 million in the same period stretching from 2023-2024. On average, Gauteng experiences the highest loadshedding – 179 MW .
. Mpumalanga ranked second with 132 MW .
. Limpopo places third with 103 MW.
While the lowest levels are in the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape respectively.

Parts of Gauteng to face 14-hour power outage on Tuesday
Due to planned maintenance, Eskom has scheduled a 14-hour power outage in parts of Soweto, Gauteng. The maintenance is scheduled for Tuesday, 29 July, from 9:00 to 23:00. Eskom said there will be an electricity supply disruption in Soweto due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network. 'The power outage will affect customers in Moletsane and Tladi in Soweto on Tuesday, 29 July, from 9:00 – 23:00. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,' the power utility said. 'Eskom in Gauteng conducts planned maintenance on the distribution electricity network across the province as part of its maintenance plan. It is essential for maintenance to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply,' Eskom added. In the interest of safety, Eskom said customers should treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the power outage. 'Eskom would like to thank you for your cooperation and apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by this maintenance.' Additionally, the power utility stated that if circumstances beyond its control arise, the planned electricity maintenance in Soweto may not proceed as communicated. Fury over massive rates and taxes billing crisis in ELM
VANDERBIJLPARK – A storm is brewing in Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) as fed-up residents lashed out over massive water and electricity bills for services they say they never used. This comes after dozens of angry homeowners, especially from Vanderbijlpark, descended on ELM offices demanding answers and action. Angry residents complained about outrageous bills, with some reaching into the hundreds of thousands, and a few even exceeding R1m. Despite the municipality having launched a 50% debt relief campaign to recoup some of the outstanding water and electricity payments, residents complain about incorrect billings for water and electricity. One resident, Thuli Mkadula said, 'We wish the municipality would write off our bills. No resident will be able to pay rates and taxes of approximately R700 000. We are willing to pay the municipality as long as they bill us correctly.' Mantoa Mkomotoane said, 'I was paying R3 000 and later paid R1 000. Now I pay R600 every month, however, every month the bills go up. I don't know where the R1.7m they claim I owe the municipality comes from.' ELM spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni disputed the claims. 'The municipality will deal with the disputes the community is bringing forward. Inconsistency in billing is not only limited to our municipality, but the entire country is going through such challenges. As a municipality, we have been working on resolving these issues; hence, we have a dispute resolution committee, and we will continue,' he said.

All in a day's work: Firefighters deliver baby at Cape Town station
It was an extraordinary start to the day for Cape Town's Ottery firefighters when a surprise delivery arrived, but not in the form of an emergency call. According to the City of Cape Town, on 24 July, around 05:30 in the morning, a woman walked into the Ottery fire station experiencing abdominal pains. Little did these Cape Town firefighters know, their day was about to get a whole lot more interesting. The woman, who appeared to be an expectant mother, explained that she was due to give birth the next day (25 July) at Hanover Park Day Hospital, but felt her baby was coming early. The on-duty team, led by Platoon Commander Amesha Bachan, a qualified ambulance emergency assistant, sprang into action. Within an hour, at around 06:25, they successfully delivered a healthy baby boy named Lagen. Newborn baby Lagen holds on to the finger of Platoon Commander Amesha Bachan. 'Firefighters didn't hesitate to help little Lagen into the world safely and their quick reaction ensured both mom and baby are doing well. While our firefighters are trained to handle emergencies, the role of midwife doesn't happen often.' said Alderman JP Smith, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. 'I am glad our residents know where to go in an emergency and it is heartwarming to see our staff step up to the plate every time.' Smith added. Smith praised firefighters for their composure and swift actions, adding, 'They will remember this morning with pride. We wish the mom and her newborn all the best.'
