Probe ordered after baby suffers seizure following 11-hour wait at Melaka Hospital
State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said although he was abroad on official duty, he was aware of the viral case and had ordered a thorough investigation to be conducted.
"I have contacted the Melaka Health director (Dr Ruzita Mustaffa), as well as the top management of Melaka Hospital and have requested an investigation into this matter.
"At the same time, I hope no one will make any assumptions until the case is resolved," he said when contacted today.
Earlier, a 13-minute video went viral on social media showing a baby crying in pain, drawing sympathy from netizens.
Many netizens left comments calling for an investigation into the case, with some claiming that such incidents had occurred too many times and should be brought to an end immediately.
Meanwhile, the baby's mother, Siti Aishah Rahim, 27, said on her Facebook page that she and her mother arrived at the Emergency and Trauma Department of Melaka Hospital at 2.30pm on Saturday after her eldest daughter 22-month-old Siti Farha Adelia Mohd Firdaus suddenly developed a fever.
She said upon arrival, a nurse took her daughter's blood sample but left her unattended, as the baby's temperature rose steadily to 38, 39, and eventually 40 degrees Celsius.
"I kept asking, but the only response I received was to wait until my baby had a seizure at 1am yesterday (Sunday), causing her body to stiffen," she said.
The baby was then transferred from the Green Zone to the Yellow Zone after her condition worsened before doctors attempted to stabilise her.

Melaka intensifies crackdown on illegal cigarette sales and smoking offences
MELAKA: A total of 3,156 notices with fines amounting to RM176,350 have been issued for offences under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) in Melaka since its enforcement began last October. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said the Melaka Health Department conducted 701 operations, inspecting 28,980 premises to curb smoking-related violations. Offences included smoking in prohibited areas, minors smoking, and failure to display no-smoking signs. 'Enforcement has prioritised eateries, food stalls, and hawker centres, with ongoing operations targeting illegal sales and promotions of tobacco products,' Ngwe said after the 'Safe Lungs Operation' in Duyong. During the latest operation, 10 food premises were inspected, resulting in six offence notices worth RM1,500. Two traders were fined RM40,000 for selling cigarettes below legal prices. Authorities also seized 450 smuggled cigarette packs worth RM3,055.50, suspected to be sold cheaply to students. Melaka launches 10-week measles-rubella immunisation drive from Aug 4
MELAKA: The Melaka government will conduct a 10-week Measles-Rubella Supplementary Immunisation Activity starting Aug 4 to address the increasing number of measles cases in the state. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said the free vaccination drive targets babies and children aged six to 59 months, born between Aug 1, 2020, and Jan 31, 2025, regardless of nationality. The campaign aims to cover over 46,000 children. Vaccines will be available at health clinics, rural clinics, and Malaysian Armed Forces health centres via walk-ins, appointments, or the MySejahtera app. Outreach programmes will also be held at selected locations. Ngwe noted that Melaka recorded 38 measles cases this year, with an incidence rate of 36.3 per million population between the first and 30th epidemiological week. This is lower than the 74 cases reported in 2024 but still exceeds the World Health Organisation's elimination target of fewer than one case per million population. He attributed the rise to immunity gaps among unvaccinated children, including migrants, and high population mobility due to Melaka's status as a tourist destination. The supplementary vaccination aims to close these gaps and prevent future outbreaks. The announcement followed the Healthy Lungs Operation event, which also marked the enforcement of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024. Portugal records 264 excess deaths in a week due to heatwave
LISBON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Mainland Portugal recorded 264 excess deaths during the heat alert period that began a week ago, a 21.2 percent increase compared to the expected number, mainly among people over 75 years old and in the northern region, according to data released Friday by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS). The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasted a sharp rise in temperatures across the mainland in the coming days, with values expected to reach or exceed 40 degrees Celsius in several regions, especially over the weekend. The DGS said in a statement that high air temperatures are generally associated with periods of mortality above the expected level for the time of year.
