Centre gives assurance, construction of NH-66 to be completed by Dec: Kerala minister

Time of India04-06-2025
NEW DELHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central government has promised to complete the ongoing construction of the National Highway 66 project, spanning from Kasaragod in the north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south, by December this year, Kerala Public Works Minister P A Mohammed Riyas said on Wednesday.
The assurance was given by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during a meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in New Delhi, he said.
The state government would continue to extend all support to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to complete the much-awaited infrastructure project in a time-bound manner, Riyas told reporters in Delhi after taking part in the meeting attended by Gadkari and Vijayan.
"Gadkari has opined that the construction of the NH 66, between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram, will be completed by December 2025. If there are any other issues in this regard, all those things will be examined and resolved, and the project will be taken forward," the minister said.
As of now, the Centre has assured that the project can be dedicated as a new year gift to the people in 2026, he said.
Sharing more details about the meeting, Riyas said Rs 6700 crore projects, submitted for road development in the state, have received central approval.

As many as 14 projects submitted by Kerala to the Centre have been approved, he said, adding that it has also been informed that the state will receive Rs 151 crore of the amount due under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme this week itself.
Gadkari assured that the 380-metre-long road, which was damaged during the construction of NH 66 in the Kuriyad area of Malappuram, would be reconstructed as a viaduct (a type of long bridge) at the contractor's own expense.
Quoting the union minister, Riyas further said that the Kollam-Senkotta Greenfield (NH 744) would be approved within three months.
The state minister also said that a directive has been received to prepare a DPR for the construction of a road connecting National Highway 66 to the Kozhikode International Airport.
Riyas's statement came hours after the opposition Congress in Kerala on Wednesday demanded a CBI probe into the recent collapse and damage of sections of National Highway 66 across the state following heavy rains.
Criticising the Left government in the state for not seeking any inquiry so far into the issue, the grand old party said only a comprehensive probe can uncover the alleged corruption involved in the construction of national highways in the state.
Riyas, however, sought to belittle the matter and said though there are certain issues in some reaches of the under-construction highway, the work is progressing in a remarkable manner generally.
"The state government will continue to extend all support to complete the construction. It is not going to be discontinued anyway," he said.
The PWD minister added that the state government had urged the union minister to take strong action over issues arising from the NH 66 construction and ensure a timely completion of the project.
The Centre, in turn, gave assurance in both these matters, he added.
"Had a productive meeting with Hon'ble Union Minister Shri @nitin_gadkari Ji in Delhi to review the progress of ongoing National Highway projects in Kerala.
Thank you for your continued support," CM Vijayan tweeted later.
Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan, during a press meet in Malappuram, pointed to the alleged engineering lapses in the NH construction.
Besides an investigation into the technical aspect by an expert panel, a comprehensive probe should be conducted into the "corruption" involved in it, he alleged.
"A large-scale probe should be carried out into the lapses in road (national highway) constructions in the state.
A CBI probe should be ordered. Corruption to the tune of thousands of crores of rupees has happened in it," Satheesan told reporters in Malappuram.
He claimed that the opposition has received clear indications of some people within the state government who allegedly granted favours to the contract company, which is now facing allegations over the construction of the NH in the state.
The leader further alleged that the Pinarayi Vijayan government's silence on the serious issue of the NH collapse stems from its apprehension to speak out against the union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The LoP's demand for a CBI probe came days after CM Vijayan had made it clear that the full responsibility for the construction of the national highway lies with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Vijayan had said the development of the National Highway, which had been stalled due to the severe apathy of the previous UDF government, became possible solely because of the determination of the LDF government.
The political blame game erupted following the collapse of a section of the under-construction National Highway 66, the appearance of cracks in parts of the road, and soil slips in areas where hills had been levelled for construction in central and northern Kerala after continuous rainfall two weeks ago.
The incidents were reported from Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. PTI

Where are silver prices headed? Rich Dad Poor Dad author sees ‘explosion' in July; here's the outlook

Best-selling author Robert Kiyosaki has once again stirred the investment world, this time with a forecast that silver prices are set to 'explode in July.' Taking to social media platform X, the Rich Dad Poor Dad author called silver the 'best asymmetric buy' currently available, highlighting its high reward-to-risk ratio. 'Silver is the best 'asymmetric buy' today. That means more possible upside gain with little downside risk. Silver prices will explode in July,' Kiyosaki wrote. He further added, 'Everyone can afford silver today… but not tomorrow,' urging followers to act while prices remain accessible. 'Your profits are made when you buy… Not when you sell,' he said. Kiyosaki's dramatic prediction comes as market analysts also turn bullish on silver's prospects, citing a combination of geopolitical tension, industrial demand, and favourable market dynamics. Jigar Trivedi, senior research analyst, currencies & commodities at Reliance Securities, highlighted silver's growing appeal as a safe-haven asset amid rising geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties. He told ET that while gold continues to hold its ground as a traditional safety net in times of crisis, Trivedi pointed out that silver is gaining an edge due to its increasing industrial demand, particularly from the electric vehicle and solar energy sectors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Official IQ Test - Updated 2025 IQ International Undo Trivedi also expected COMEX silver prices to climb to $36–$37 per ounce, with MCX silver potentially reaching Rs 1,10,000 per kg within a month. He attributed the projected gains to a weaker dollar and rising safe-haven demand and urged investors to maintain a diversified portfolio, suggesting an allocation of 12–15% in silver. Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst at LKP Securities, expected a structural turnaround in the white metal's price trajectory. He pointed out that silver, after a prolonged downtrend since its 2011 peak of $49.50, began a significant upward reversal in 2020. Silver has seen a sharp rally of nearly 60% over the past two years, with prices rising from Rs 87,000 to Rs 1,04,500 in 2025. According to Jateen, the metal could climb further to Rs 1,10,000–Rs 1,20,000 this year, driven by consistent demand from green energy industries and the ripple effects of global geopolitical tensions. He continues to favour a buy-on-dips strategy for investors aiming to tap into the current upward trend. Naveen Mathur, director, commodities & currencies at Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers, highlighted that silver's rally to 13-year highs may be part of a larger, multi-year trend. The recent surge in silver prices has been fuelled by a combination of strong industrial demand, safe-haven buying, and persistent trade-related uncertainties, according to Mathur. He believed that silver is poised to outperform gold in the second half of 2025, forecasting a trading range of $38.70–$41.50 per ounce, roughly Rs 1,15,000–Rs 1,23,000 per kg in MCX futures. Looking ahead, Mathur expects silver to climb as high as $50 per ounce globally, or Rs 1,50,000–Rs 1,70,000 per kg in the Indian market over the next three to five years. He attributes this bullish long-term view to ongoing supply deficits, with 2025 marking the fifth straight year of market shortfall. While Kiyosaki's prediction of a sharp spike in silver prices this July may seem ambitious, the current momentum, underpinned by macroeconomic trends, strong industrial use, and tightening supply, suggests silver is likely to stay in the spotlight. Amarnath Yatra Begins: ONGC sets up Yatri Niwas and disaster management complex for pilgrims in J-K

Amarnath Yatra Begins: State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) has set up a permanent disaster management complex at Baltal, Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir for pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra. This Disaster Management and Yatri Niwas Complex will become operational on Friday, the company said in a statement. ONGC is developing these complexes at four key locations – Baltal, Nunwan, Bijbehara, and Sidhra – in Jammu and Kashmir, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the Amarnath Yatra from Jammu on July 2. The first batch of pilgrims set off from Lakhanpur to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu amid tight security arrangements, marking the official start of the Amarnath Yatra 2025. The Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu serves as the primary base camp for pilgrims from across the country before they proceed to the cave shrine of Amarnath nestled in the majestic Himalayas of South Kashmir. "The Baltal Yatri Niwas and Disaster Management Complex, spread across 6,315 square metres, is now fully operational and includes a Yatri Niwas, VIP guest house, security infrastructure, and disaster-response facilities," an ONGC spokesperson said. The 38-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high shrine will commence on July 3 from the Valley via the twin tracks—the traditional 48-kilometre Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-kilometre but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The yatra will conclude on August 9. The ONGC spokesperson added that the Baltal facility will be formally inaugurated on July 4 by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in the presence of ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh. The facilities are currently being set up at Nunwan in Anantnag district, measuring 8,500 square metres, and at Bijbehara in Anantnag (7,640 sq m). Both sites are expected to be completed by September 2025, he said. The Sidhra complex in Jammu, designed to serve as a vital hub for boarding, emergency management, and logistical coordination, is targeted for completion by September 2026. These facilities will be operated by the Amarnath Shrine Board under the Jammu and Kashmir government, the spokesperson said, adding that it will provide safe lodging, sanitation, and emergency support to people undertaking the Amarnath Yatra, adding that over five lakh people undertake it every year. This permanent infrastructure will also benefit the local population throughout the year, the spokesperson added. The Baltal facility will provide safe lodging, sanitation, and emergency support to people undertaking the Amarnath Yatra.
