State to conduct second CET, colleges worried about delay in academic year
The move comes after only 61,666 students appeared for the CET this year, conducted between April 29 and 30, whereas there are over 1,08,000 seats available across the professional undergraduate programmes in the state. With such a large shortfall in applicants, many colleges fear that a significant number of seats could remain vacant this academic year.
After the poor response from the students for CET, the management of various colleges approached the state government to hold one more round of CET to fill the vacant seats. Chandrakant Patil, minister of higher and technical education, announced the second CET on Friday for the students who missed the first CET.
However, this fresh round of testing is expected to take at least one more month. Parents and colleges are concerned about the uncertainty in the timeline and outcomes of the second CET, which could delay the start of the upcoming academic year.
'Students are anxious due to the delay, and another round of CET will only add to the confusion. We don't know when the session will start or whether all seats will be filled,' said a principal from a suburban college.
According to the National Education Policy (NEP), the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) regulates admissions into all professional undergraduate courses in the country. This mandates the colleges offering these courses to admit students through CET. From academic year 2024-25, these courses came under the purview of the AICTE as per NEP.
In 2024, the University of Mumbai decided to change the nomenclature of the professional undergraduate programmes to allow the colleges to admit students into the professional courses based on class 12 scores and move away from the CET gateway for admissions. The decision was taken in the wake of requests put forth by several affiliated colleges not willing to follow AICTE regulations. Those colleges wishing to continue with the old name of BMS would have to admit students based on the scores of the CET scheduled by the state's Common Entrance Test (CET) cell. Many top colleges, including St. Xavier's College, renamed BMS to BCom (Management Studies) and BCA to BSc (Computer Applications) to move away from CET. However, there are many colleges across the state that have decided to go ahead with the CET for the courses.
'This entire process is going to affect the upcoming academic year. The second CET will take at least another month to complete, and only then can student admissions begin. Many students who appeared for the BMS CET have already taken admission in traditional degree courses. Once they secure a seat in professional courses, they will cancel those earlier admissions. This back-and-forth is likely to leave many seats vacant in colleges,' said a principal of a college in Malad, expressing concern over the revised admission process and pointing out that the delay dissolves the purpose of early declaration of class 12 results to start higher education on time.
Meanwhile, the government is also exploring the option of scrapping the CET altogether for these professional courses, possibly allowing colleges to admit students based on their Class 12 marks instead. Experts pointed out that if the government wishes this change, it will be possible only in the next academic year, not this one.

‘Rajasthan school tragedy is man-made'
Expressing deep anguish over the collapse of a government school building in Rajasthan recently claiming the lives of seven innocent children, the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) has held the Rajasthan government's negligence and apathy towards public education responsible for the tragedy. In a media note released on Sunday, AIDSO district secretary Tulajaram N.K. termed the incident a man-made disaster. 'This is not a natural disaster. It is a man-made tragedy caused by the failure of the Rajasthan government to maintain public infrastructure and ensure safe learning environments for children,' he said, offering condolences to the bereaved families and expressing solidarity with them during this difficult time on behalf of his organsiation. Mr. Tulajaram said that the incident highlighted the sorry state of infrastructure in government schools across the country, many of which are in a state of disrepair. 'Thousands of government school buildings are in disrepair. Poor maintenance, inadequate infrastructure and chronic underfunding have turned these institutions into death traps for lakhs of students,' it said. Condemning the Central government's response to the tragedy, he criticised the move to issue advisories instructing schools to prepare for 'emergencies and natural disasters' and to coordinate with disaster management authorities. 'Instead of preventing such disasters, the Central government is asking students and teachers to prepare for them. This is outrageous,' the statement said. The organisation also condemned the attempts to deflect blame onto students, teachers and school officials. 'The root cause of the crisis lies in the systemic underfunding of government schools and the anti-public education policies such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to privatise and corporatise education,' it claimed. The organisation has demanded an impartial judicial inquiry into the Rajasthan school building collapse and strict punishment to those responsible, immediate inspection and repair of all unsafe government school buildings across the country, a significant increase in funding for infrastructure in public schools, withdrawal of NEP 2020 and formulation of a democratic, scientific and pro-people education policy and an immediate end to victim-blaming of students and teachers while placing accountability squarely on governments for ensuring school safety. AIDSO has called upon all students, teachers, parents and citizens concerned across the country to join hands in resisting such negligence and to intensify the fight to protect and strengthen public education.

CET conducted smoothly across Haryana; officials, volunteers praised for support
1 2 Chandigarh: The two-day Common Eligibility Test (CET) organised by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) concluded smoothly on Sunday. More than 90% of candidates appeared at around 3,000 examination centres set up across the state in coordination with the district administration and the education department. The seamless conduct of the exam, with hardly any incidents of unfair means or candidate harassment, marked the first major success of the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in its third term. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini praised the coordinated efforts of officers and employees across Haryana, stating that the CET set a perfect example of efficient administration. "The smooth and efficient conduct of the CET was made possible due to teamwork," he said while interacting with reporters in Panchkula. From public transport arrangements by Haryana Roadways and shuttle services, to facilitation by police personnel at and around exam centres, officials worked in unison. Like Saturday, HSSC chairman Himmat Singh and transport minister Anil Vij conducted first-hand inspections of arrangements at centres and bus depots, and interacted with students. At several centres, police personnel acted as Samaritans. CET conducted smoothly with coordinated efforts, says Haryana CM
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday said the smooth and efficient conduct of the Common Eligibility Test (CET) for two days was made possible due to coordinated efforts of officers and employees. Around 13.48 lakh candidates were eligible to appear in the examination. Such teamwork ensured that CET set a perfect example of efficient administration, he said, while interacting with the media in Panchkula, near here. Earlier, the Chief Minister participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' programme at Panchkamal in Panchkula. He said the monthly address showcases inspiring stories of people who have contributed to society and highlights India's cultural values, encouraging citizens nationwide. Making a mention of CET arrangements, the Chief Minister said that the government ensured hassle-free facilities so that candidates could appear for the exam in a positive and comfortable environment. Administrative officers, police personnel, and roadways staff worked in close coordination, while parents and residents also extended support by setting up refreshment points for candidates at various locations. This combined effort turned CET into a meaningful and well-organised event across the state, the Chief Minister added. The CET concluded on the second day, on Sunday, amid tight security across the state. It was held in morning and afternoon shifts. The Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) conducted the CET for the Group C posts recruitment. Arrangements were made across 22 districts of Haryana, and in Chandigarh too, where exam centres were set up. Special bus services were arranged by the state Transport Department to ferry candidates to the exam centres. HSSC Chairman Himmat Singh visited Rohtak to take stock of the arrangements. Candidates were allowed in only after a thorough check, officials said. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 (power to issue orders in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) of 2023 were enforced within a 500-m radius of all exam centres.
