Harish Rao slams govt over ‘negligent' attitude

Hyderabad: Expressing anger at the government for failing to provide relief and inform the family even after five hours of the accident, BRS senior leader T Harish Rao on Monday demanded the government to provide an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore to the kin of the dead and Rs 50 lakh to the injured. Harish Rao, along with MLA Chinta Prabhakar and other leaders visited the fire accident site in Pashamylaram Industrial Estate in Sangareddy district. On this occasion, he spoke to the District Collector, SP and NDRF teams and inquired about the relief efforts being made. Later, talking to the media, Harish Rao alleged that government failed to take relief efforts and inform the family members even after five hours of the incident. 'It was very sad that eight people lost their lives in such a big explosion. I express my deepest condolences to their family members. A total of 140 people were working in the company at the time of the accident. The entire four-storey building collapsed. Eight people died, while about 26 people were taken to various hospitals. The condition of the rest is not known. It is unclear how many people managed to get out. The family members are worried. They are begging the authorities to trace them,' said Rao. The BRS leader said that he had asked the Collector and SP to try to provide details to the family members. People from other states are working in different places. Family members are extremely worried. 'I have instructed the officials to set up a control room and a common phone number. What are they doing now that it has been 5 hours since the accident? The NDRF is working wonderfully to trace those involved in the accident. But, the government and the authorities are working irresponsibly. Set up special officers, keep an attendance list,' said the BRS leader. Harish Rao alleged that the Collector saying one number and the SP was saying another number when it comes to how many people were on duty. He said that the injured were being admitted to primary care hospitals. If they have 30 per cent burns, why are they not being sent to corporate hospitals, he asked, advising the government to send them to AIG, CARE, and Apollo hospitals.

Priyadarshini Mattoo rape and murder: Rapist-killer seeks release; Delhi HC verdict likely today

NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court is likely to decide on Tuesday the plea for premature release filed by Santosh Kumar Singh , who is serving a life term for the 1996 rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo . Justice Sanjeev Narula, after hearing submissions from the state and Singh, reserved the order on his plea on May 14. In his 2023 petition, Singh sought the quashing of the recommendation of Sentence Review Board (SRB) of Delhi prisons, which rejected his premature release in a meeting held on Oct 21, 2021. Senior advocate Mohit Mathur, representing Singh, previously argued that his client was sentenced to a life term and already underwent 25 years of incarceration, including remission. Mathur stated that Singh's conduct was satisfactory, indicating reformation and the fact that he lost every potential to commit a crime in the future. He would be a useful member of society, and for the past several years, he has been in an open jail, the counsel submitted. Man involved in dacoity case arrested in encounter with Ghaziabad police

A criminal facing multiple cases of robbery and violence against him was arrested following an encounter in Ghaziabad early Monday after he tried to escape during a vehicle check, the police said. The accused, identified as Jitendra, was nabbed by the Kavi Nagar police team during a vehicle checking operation near Diamond Tiraha. The police have recovered a country-made pistol and cartridges from the possession of the accused, who is also involved in a 2023 dacoity case. According to the police, a car was approaching suspiciously towards the checkpoint, and when the Kavi Nagar police team signaled the driver to stop, Jitendra, who was at the wheel, reversed the vehicle. However, the car crashed into a tree, and soon the accused got out of the vehicle, started running, and allegedly opened fire on the police officials who were chasing him, the police said. 'The police fired in self-defence and managed to shoot him in the leg. He has been arrested and sent to a hospital for treatment. Further legal proceedings are underway,' said the Kavinagar Station House Officer. During interrogation, Jitendra told the police he had come to Ghaziabad in connection with a case registered against him at Kavi Nagar police station. Police officers said that Jitendra has a long criminal history, with six cases registered in Hapur, one in Bulandshahr, and one in Ghaziabad's Kavi Nagar police station. 'We had earlier received information that he was an accomplice in the Rs 1 crore dacoity. Our investigation has now revealed that he has also been involved in previous incidents as well, the cases against him are of robbery, police encounters, and violence against people,' the SHO added.
