Several policies in place to address imbalance between high-value jobs and graduates

KLANG: To overcome the imbalance between the number of high-value jobs offered in the labour market and the number of graduates from higher learning institutions as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the government has launched several policies to address the matter, according to Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
The minister said among the policies in question were the MADANI Economic Framework and progressive salary policy which were among the efforts made by the government across ministries to ensure that every graduate and worker received a dignified remuneration.
'We have about 300,000 university graduates yearly, plus 100,000 TVET graduates, making a total of 400,000 Malaysians with higher education qualifications, but every year we are only able to generate 50,000 high-value and highly skilled jobs,' he said.
He said this when met after the 2025 Trade Union Affairs Programme (PHEKS) Central Zone assistance handover ceremony here today.
Sim also encouraged workers to join trade unions so that suitable salaries or remuneration could be negotiated well with employers.
Yesterday, the media reported that more than 65 per cent of degree holders in the country earn a monthly salary of below RM3,000, thus earning an 'enough to eat' income with no room to save, invest or increase their social mobility.
In addition, more than 70 per cent of graduates in the country were found to be forced to work in the semi-skilled and unskilled sectors.
The findings were obtained through a study The 'Gaji Cukup Makan' Economy: When Higher Education Becomes an Economic Risk, conducted under the Malaysia Labour Market Insight Series.

'This programme is one of the key initiatives of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) in conjunction with Malaysia's Chairmanship of ASEAN 2025, under the theme of Inclusivity and Sustainability, bringing together youth from across Southeast Asia. 'A total of 12 youth teams from 10 ASEAN member countries are participating in this edition, including Timor-Leste,' she told reporters after launching the competition here today. She added that the programme also supports the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2021-2025, which focuses on strengthening digital skills, youth-driven innovation, and inclusive regional cooperation. On the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Career Day of the East Coast Zone Youth and Sports Skills Training Institutes (ILKBS), which was launched concurrently today, Hannah said the initiative connects graduates directly with industry players through dialogues, open interviews and the signing of memoranda of understanding involving 16 companies. According to her, the effort reflects the government's continuous commitment to enhancing graduate employability, in line with the National TVET Policy and Malaysia's aspiration to reach 35 per cent skilled workforce by 2030. 'The combination of this regional robotics competition and a strategic career development platform provides a holistic space for youth to showcase creativity, apply technical skills and explore real career pathways,' she said.

MALAYSIA, a land rich in diversity, culture, and potential, stands at a crucial turning point. Decades of unresolved issues—corruption, inequality, racial polarisation, brain drain, and environmental degradation,have left many Malaysians asking a difficult but necessary question. Does Malaysia need a reset? The answer is a resounding yes. Not a mere tweak or a cosmetic reform, but a deep, systemic, and comprehensive reset, one that touches every dimension of our nationhood. For too long, we have witnessed cycles of political instability, rising cost of living, racial and religious tensions, and environmental disasters exacerbated by poor governance and neglect. These challenges are not isolated, they are interconnected symptoms of a system in urgent need of transformation. If we dare to envision a better Malaysia, then we must be courageous enough to demand a reset Malaysia, a national movement towards renewal, integrity, and inclusivity. Malaysia's political landscape is fractured by race-based politics, corruption scandals, and short-term power struggles. A political reset means, leadership with integrity, dismantling race-based policies and embracing needs-based governance. The nation's democratic institutions need to strengthen with an independent judiciary, a truly autonomous anti-corruption commission, and a free media. Electoral reforms need to be implemented which includes transparent political financing and term limits for top leadership. There must be prioritisation process in place for nation-building over narrow political gains. The Malaysian economy reset must evolve beyond commodity dependence and low-wage labour to innovation. The reduction of inequality through fairer tax policies, improved social safety nets, and access to quality jobs will empower workers with fair wages and protections especially in the gig economy. Meanwhile, our education system must be more than an examination factory. It must shape thinkers, innovators, and ethical citizens, thus nurturing minds for the future. This reset must includes modernising curricula to prioritise critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, and environmental stewardship. It must provide equal educational opportunities regardless of race, income, or region especially in Sabah, Sarawak and marginalised communities which will end the politicisation of education while promoting a balance of merit and social equity. Budget must be sufficiently located in investing in teacher training and elevating of the teaching profession to one of high esteem, which is lacking now. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the cracks in Malaysia's healthcare system. A healthcare reset demands dignity in wellness for all, not only for those can afford in private hospitals. The public hospitals must be strengthened to public healthcare facilities, ensuring equitable access nationwide to all Malaysians. Issues regarding doctors overworking and getting exhausted are areas required urgent attention by the government. Many doctors are leaving government service in thousands either to private sector or going aboard. The mental health services must be promoted extended and the public must educated thus de-stigmatising psychological care. Government need to invest more in preventive care, telemedicine and digital health solutions. Malaysia's strength lies in its diversity. However, years of racial politicking have strained social cohesion. A social reset need to be brought into focus in order to bring about unity beyond identity. Proper laws need to be enacted against discrimination and hate speech which will go a long way in preventing disunity. Affirmative citizenship rights for stateless children and marginalised groups must once for all be solved not dangling with ulterior motives. The promotion of gender equality and ensuring representation for women in leadership and in the parliament representation must not just be mere lip service but must become a reality. National unity based on respect, shared values, and common aspirations must be reignited. Malaysia is require a environmental reset which requires stewardship over exploitation. The relationship with the environment cannot be transactional. The floods, pollution and deforestation are warning signs of systemic failure. A green reset calls for aggressive climate action achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This will end deforestation and restoring degraded ecosystems. Another area of concern is in investing in clean energy, sustainable transportation, and climate-resilient infrastructure thus protecting biodiversity and preserving natural resources for future generations. No reset is possible without a change in the national psyche on the moral and cultural mindset. The government must look beyond laws and policies, which must embrace a cultural transformation that rejects corruption not just as a crime but as a moral failure. More celebration on diversity through arts, dialogue, and mutual respect must be initiated championing integrity, compassion, and civic responsibility as national values. This will encourage active citizenship where every Malaysian contributes to nation-building. In conclusion a call to Malaysians which is more than a political programme, which is a generational call. KUALA LUMPUR: Great Wall Motor Sales Malaysia Sdn Bhd's (GWM) sales in the first half of 2025 (1H25) have exceeded its total for the whole of 2024. It also marks a 20.3 per cent increase from the previous six months, GWM said, without sharing the actual figures. This reinforces its position as a key player and underscores the brand's growing influence among automotive players in Malaysia, the company added. GWM claimed that it remains firmly within the top three Chinese automotive brands in the country, a position strengthened by its expanding retail footprint and a compelling line-up of new energy vehicles tailored for the Malaysian market. By staying attuned to local needs and evolving market trends, GWM said it continues to deliver meaningful growth in a competitive automotive landscape. GWM chief operating officer Roslan Abdullah said this is not just about numbers, it's about momentum and meaning. "Our growth shows that Malaysians are embracing our vision of cars that combine innovation, value, and relevance to their everyday lives," he added. Roslan also said the company's first-half performance reflects the strength of its product portfolio and growing recognition of GWM as a serious automotive player in Malaysia. Spearheaded by the Haval H6 HEV, GWM claimed it has emerged as a leading hybrid choice for Malaysian drivers. It added that rather than engaging in price-driven competition, the company focuses on delivering safety, innovation, and a premium driving experience.
