FIFA rule broken in Club World Cup final as Donald Trump gatecrashes Chelsea's trophy lift and tensions boil over after the final whistle
An intriguing spectacle and surprise 3-0 result in Chelsea 's favour against Paris Saint-Germain was overshadowed by events off the pitch. Chief among them was the scene-stealing display of United States President Donald Trump, who insisted on taking centre stage for the Blues' trophy lift.
But earlier, the Super Bowl-style half-time show attracted attention for all the wrong reasons and necessitated the flouting of one of the game's laws.
At MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, reggaeton artist J Balvin, rapper Doja Cat, Tems and Emmanuel Kelly performed to the crowd. They were joined on stage by Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, who made a surprise guest appearance for the show.
The only problem - apart from claims of 'utter woke nonsense' by fans - was the duration of the set. At a whopping 24 minutes, the showcase far exceeded the seventh statute in the Laws of the Game.
Law 7 of the IFAB's (International Football Association Board) states that 'players are entitled to an interval at half-time, not exceeding 15 minutes'.
It adds: 'A short drinks break (which should not exceed one minute) is permitted at the interval of half-time in extra time. Competition rules must state the duration of the half-time interval and it may be altered only with the referee's permission.'
Reacting to the show on social media, many football were bemused by the spectacle.
One wrote: 'Having a halftime show during this Club World Cup final feels so weird'. Another user wrote: 'Too many music shows in this Club World Cup'.
The other notable event during the evening came after the final whistle when tensions boiled over and PSG boss Enrique appeared to strike Chelsea striker Joao Pedro in the face during a heated post-match clash between both teams.
Pedro was initially embroiled in a confrontation with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi - with Andrey Santos also on the scene - before Enrique marched over towards the situation.
But rather than defusing the situation, the Spanish manager made it physical, laying his hands on Pedro before being held back by his own player Presnel Kimpembe.
Pedro fell to the floor in dramatic fashion, clutching at his face.
Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia stepped in to defend their team-mate, holding back a visibly frustrated Gianluigi Donnarumma, who appeared to berate Pedro for his animated reaction.
What followed was pandemonium, with around five Chelsea players swarming Donnarumma in the aftermath.
The PSG goalkeeper was shoved by Tosin Adarabioyo, as Kimpembe continued his attempts to defuse tensions alongside Chelsea's Filip Jorgensen.
Pedro eventually got back to his feet, only to find himself at the centre of a chaotic melee involving too many bodies to count.
On the touchline, a furious Enzo Maresca stormed in to drag his players away, shouting at those involved as he tried to restore order.

Football fans are beginning to worry that the FIFA cover star curse has returned, as both EA Sports FC 26's cover stars are already injured. Although they had already leaked beforehand, the cover stars for EA Sports FC 26 were officially revealed this week, alongside the first details and gameplay footage for the upcoming football game. England and Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham is once again the main star (having also been on EA Sports FC 25's cover), but he's now joined by former teammate and Bayern Munich player Jamal Musiala. However, in an unfortunate coincidence, both players are currently unable to play football in real life and will be out of action even after EA Sports FC 26 launches on September 26. Despite suffering a shoulder injury in November 2023, Bellingham has continued to play and only recently underwent surgery. In fact, the news of his problems dropped the same day as the EA Sports FC 26 announcement and Bellingham's not expected to return for another four months or so. Aside from being out of the game by the time of EA Sports FC 26's release, he's also expected to miss the start of the 2025-2026 season. As for Musiala, he was injured during the Club World Cup earlier this month, when Bayern Munich played against Paris St-Germain, where he suffered both a broken leg and a dislocated ankle. He has since undergone surgery, but this still means he's out of the game and, just like Bellingham, isn't expected to be ready to return until November 2025 at the earliest. While it's unlikely this will have any impact on EA Sports FC 26's sales, the timing is extremely unfortunate from a marketing standpoint, now that the two players EA picked to headline the game are on hiatus. We've already seen some fans suggest the FIFA cover curse is at work. If you're unfamiliar with it, there have been frequent instances of football players who appear on the cover of FIFA (what EA Sports FC used to be called) games suffering misfortunes. It hasn't happened every year and it has not always been injuries (FIFA 21 star, Kylian Mbappé, for instance, went on to score no goals at the UEFA European Championship in 2021), but enough examples have warranted the curse's inclusion on Wikipedia's list of sports related curses. However, Bellingham was injured in late 2023, so EA really should have been aware he'd have to undergo surgery at around this time… not that that stopped the company sticking him on the cover of last year's game too. More Trending For what it's worth, no such misfortunes appears to have befallen Swedish player Zlatan Ibrahimović, who retired in 2023 and graces the cover of EA Sports FC 26's Ultimate Edition. Let's hope he doesn't somehow break any bones in the coming months. Fans of the Madden NFL games (which EA also handles) have their own superstition about that series' covers, believing any player who appears on it is doomed to suffer an injury. In an old 2007 Kotaku interview, the EA Sports' vice president of brand marketing at the time, Chris Erb, revealed that the curse chatter did little to dissuade footballers from asking to appear on the next Madden NFL cover. 'We've spoken to plenty of guys from within the league, and they don't think it's a jinx,' said Erb. 'The players, who we work closely with, they definitely don't think it's a jinx, because they know better than anyone how easy it is to get injured, or to have a bad season.' Game of Bones! Study reveals dogs' favourite TV programmes
Many dog owners enjoy snuggling up on the sofa to watch their favourite TV show with their pet. But if the remote was in your dog's paw, what would it choose to watch? According to scientists from Auburn University in Alabama, the answer is probably something featuring animals. In a new study, the researchers surveyed more than 450 dog owners about their pets' viewing habits. The results revealed that almost half (45 per cent) of the dogs reacted when they saw an animal on TV. In particular, the pooches took note when they spotted another dog barking or howling on screen. So, if you want to give your dog the ultimate movie night, it's best to stick on something like Bluey, Scooby Doo, or Crufts. 'Companion dogs experience a meaningful, object-filled world when they view television,' the researchers said. While most dogs are regularly exposed to televisions, their preferences for content have remained unclear until now. Writing in their study, published in Scientific Reports, the research team, led by Lane Montgomery, wrote: 'Because companion dogs are regularly exposed to televisions, it is pertinent to understand how dogs behaviorally respond to and interpret these types of stimuli from a welfare perspective.' To get to the bottom of it, the researchers recruited 453 owners, whose dogs ranged in age from two months to 16 years old. The participants were surveyed about their dogs' TV viewing habits. This included whether the owner tried to teach the dog to watch TV, the average number of hours per week the owner's TV is switched on, and the average number of seconds the dog pays attention to the TV. An analysis of the results revealed that on average, the dogs watched TV for 14 minutes and eight seconds in any one sitting. Other animals were the dogs' favourite thing to watch, with 45 per cent responding to animal content such as barking or howling. The researchers also found that the dogs' personalities influenced their viewing preferences. Dogs reported by their owners as excitable were more likely to follow objects on-screen - for example during tennis or football matches. Meanwhile, fearful or anxious dogs were more likely to respond to non-animal stimuli on screen, such as car horns or doorbells. 'The results suggested that dogs respond to television stimuli based upon both categories of stimuli (i.e., animal, non-animal) and upon types of behavior (i.e., behavior that suggests attendance to the stimuli versus behavior that suggests some expectation of the movements of the stimuli),' the researchers wrote. 'In addition, individual differences in temperament impacted the types of stimuli that dogs engaged with.' While the study might seem light-hearted, the researchers say the findings could have important implications. 'These temperament differences could inform training approaches to rectify problem behaviours towards TVs,' they concluded. WHAT ARE THE TEN COMMONLY HELD MYTHS ABOUT DOGS? Eagles Super Bowl winner Braman dies aged 38
Super Bowl winner Bryan Braman has died at the age of 38 having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in February. Braman began his career with the Houston Texans in 2011 as an undrafted free agent and spent three seasons there before joining the Philadelphia Eagles. During his four years in Philadelphia, he was part of the Eagles team that lifted Super Bowl LII when they beat the New England Patriots in victory in Minneapolis was linebacker Braman's final game for the Eagles and also his last match in the NFL. Braman played 97 regular-season games and recorded 56 career retiring, Braman said winning the Super Bowl and his daughters - Blakely, 11, and Marlowe, eight - were "the three greatest accomplishments in my life".JJ Watt, Braman's former Texans team-mate, wrote on X on Thursday:, external "Rest in Peace brother.
