Kamal Nath flags tribal land grab in Chhindwara in letter to CM, seeks probe

Time of India21-05-2025

Bhopal: Former CM
Kamal Nath
on Wednesday shot a letter to CM Mohan Yadav appraising him on land grabbing by the mafia in
Chhindwara
district's tribal areas. The senior Congress leader asked the chief minister to conduct a high-level inquiry into the transfer of land belonging to the tribals in the district.
"I would like to bring to your attention a significant issue concerning Chhindwara district," Kamal Nath wrote to Yadav. "It is widely recognised that Chhindwara is predominantly a tribal region. The main tribal areas within the district include Jamai, Tamia, Harrai, Amarba, Bichhua, and Pandhurna, although
tribal communities
exist in all areas of the district, making their livelihoods through agriculture on their own land."
He said it was extremely alarming that, at present,
land mafia
are engaged in fraudulent activities aimed at the lands of tribals with the district administration either directly or indirectly facilitating these occupants, thereby undermining the interests of the tribal population.
"In the region, land mafias purchase and sell tribal properties by making agreements at prices significantly lower than the market value," Kamal Nath's letter alleged. "Once the sale deed is completed, the land is transferred to a non-tribal individual's name. These land mafias exploit tribal lands to develop residential projects or for commercial purposes. Tribal community members endure considerable hardship throughout this entire process," the letter stated.
He further pointed out, "To prevent the revelation, fake land purchase and sale agreements are created between tribal individuals, solely for appearances, which does not benefit the tribal community. Reports about these occurrences have appeared in local newspapers periodically, yet the district administration has failed to take meaningful action, leaving the interests of the tribal population unprotected.
The tribal community continues to be exploited by land mafias."
The former Union minister argued that the Madhya Pradesh Land Revenue Act includes measures to safeguard the land rights of tribal communities. "Utilising these measures, land that was unlawfully transferred from tribals in various districts has been reclaimed for them, allowing them to take possession of it. I have received information regarding such initiatives in the Budhni region," the letter stated.
"It is essential and required by law that an unbiased investigation take place concerning the transfer of tribal lands in Chhindwara district, and that these lands be liberated from land mafias and returned to the tribal communities.
"
"Consequently, I urge that a thorough high-level inquiry be carried out on cases related to the transfer of land belonging to tribals in Chhindwara district and appropriate action taken against the responsible parties," the letter said.
"To safeguard the interests of the tribal population, it is essential to adhere to legal guidelines, ensuring that the tribal community can utilise their land for agriculture and their livelihoods," Kamal Nath added.
The Congress leader asked chief minister Yadav to act promptly to protect the interests of the tribal community.

Union Minister Kishan Reddy challenges CM, ministers to debate on Centre's role in Telangana development

HYDERABAD: Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy on Sunday slammed Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's remarks against the Union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling them 'baseless and politically motivated.' He urged the chief minister to follow the PM's development model instead of 'blaming the Centre for his own failures.' This comes after Revanth accused Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of prioritising Gujarat over other states. Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad, the BJP state president challenged Revanth and his Cabinet to a public debate on the Centre's contributions to Telangana. 'He is making allegations without understanding the system,' he said. On the Metro Rail Phase-II project, Kishan said the DPR was submitted just a week ago and is under review. A decision will follow after assessing feasibility. He also said clarity on the BJP's new state president would emerge by Tuesday and efforts were on for a unanimous choice. Accusing the Congress of making false promises and deflecting blame, he said, 'Congress is in power, not BJP. People are watching and will respond in the next Assembly elections.'

No talks with Maoists as long as they carry arms: Union Minister Amit Shah

HYDERABAD: Reiterating that the Union government was committed to ending Naxalism by March 31, 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday urged Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream. He categorically stated that the Centre would not hold talks with those who continue to bear arms. 'Our policy is no talks with those who have arms in their hands. Give up arms and surrender. If you do not surrender, we have decided to end Naxalism by March 31, 2026. Should we not end the Naxalites who have killed adivasis and police personnel?' Shah said. Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the National Turmeric Board headquarters in Nizamabad, the Union home minister said that while he 'feared that the Congress might provide shelter to Maoists, there was no cause for concern as Narendra Modi was in power at the Centre'. 'The Congress is asking for talks with Maoists. Our government's policy is clear — no talks with those who hold weapons. Surrender and join the mainstream,' he said. Shah noted that in the Northeast, 10,000 individuals had surrendered and joined the mainstream, with some contesting elections at district and Assembly levels. 'In the last one-and-a-half years, around 2,000 Maoists surrendered,' he added. 'From Telangana's soil, I want to ask those who speak of protecting Naxals: What answer will you give to the families of police personnel and adivasis who lost their lives in Naxal violence? Naxals have obstructed development in adivasi areas for decades. What is your answer?' he asked. Shah accused the BRS of indulging in massive corruption during its 10-year rule. He alleged irregularities in Dharani, Kaleshwaram, Singareni and other projects, and questioned whether Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy initiated even one case against those involved. Shah claimed that the family of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao used Telangana as an 'ATM' and alleged that the state has now become an 'ATM for the Delhi Congress'.

'Backdoor NRC' Push? Why 2.93 Crore Bihar Voters Must Prove Citizenship To Cast Their Ballot

The EC kicked off a special, intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar this week. According to an announcement on Saturday, of the total 7.89 crore voters in the state, around 4.96 crore—those who were already registered as of January 1, 2003—only need to fill out and submit the new enumeration form. However, the remaining 2.93 crore voters, which is about 37 per cent of the total, will also need to provide documents proving their Indian citizenship along with the form. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told news agency PTI on Sunday that the purpose is to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out of the electoral rolls while no ineligible person is part of it. The 37 per cent population will have to provide one of the 11 listed documents to establish their place or date of birth. EC, however, clarified that it does not mean they need to furnish the place/date of birth of their parents if their parents are named in the 2003 voters' list. WHY THE NEED NOW? There is a difference between a usual revision of the electoral roll where one can add delete or edit names and EC's special intensive revision. Intensive revisions were carried out in 1952-56, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1966, 1983-84, 1987-89, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2002, 2003 and 2004, the poll body has revealed—a fact that may put the Congress in a spot. The last intensive revision for Bihar was conducted by the commission in the year 2003. This time, the EC has its reasons for repeating the practice. 'Various reasons such as rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants have necessitated the conduct of an intensive revision so as to ensure integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls," the poll body reasoned on June 24 when it announced its plans for Bihar. WHAT WILL PROVE YOUR CITIZENSHIP? In addition to the enumeration form, electors added to the role after 2003 will have to prove their citizenship in Bihar in this assembly election. Those born in India before July 1, 1987, will have to submit any document from the specified list. But those born in India between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, will have to submit an additional document establishing one parent's date and place of birth. Those born in India after December 2, 2004, will have to submit documents establishing the date and place of birth of both parents. Passports, birth certificates, and SC/ST certificates are some of the valid documents that will do the job among many others. POLITICS & GHOST OF NRC The EC has made it clear that the move will not be limited to Bihar and will be rolled out across the country. With six assembly elections lined up, many chief ministers are visibly uncomfortable with the move. Advertisement
