A Fresh Take: Executive Chef Wesli Jacobs joins Cape Grace
At Cape Town's Cape Grace Hotel - recognised as one of the city's best by Time Out - a new chapter begins under Executive Chef Wesli Jacobs, who brings a fresh vision to its five-star dining experience.
We were introduced to Chef Jacob's culinary creativity during a lunch hosted in Heirloom's private dining room alongside celebrated former World's Best sommelier, Philippe Faure-Brac.
Jacobs rose to the challenge, plating a menu set to stand beside wines open to critique by Faure-Brac (no pressure). Faure-Brac, whose attendance was a masterstroke - aligned perfectly with the hosting of the ASI General Assembly in Cape Town for the first time in its 55-year run, a landmark for the African continent as a whole.
The collaboration of this Fairmont property, under Accor's ownership, has led to significant refurbishments and enhancements at the Cape Grace, including the introduction of Heirloom Restaurant - first, under the leadership of acclaimed chef Gregory Czarnecki in 2023. Chef Asher Abramowitz later took over the reins in 2024, bringing added focus to South Africa's rich culinary heritage.
Now, Jacobs and his team, including sommelier Alvezo Abrahams, showcased exactly what guests can expect in the months ahead.
Think elegant dishes rooted in South African traditions of Cape Malay cooking with touches of finesse. Fine examples include the Seafood Biryani (paired with a Cape Point Reserve Sauvignon Blanc) and the Springbok Potjie (paired with Beyerskloof Reserve).
Other splashes of contemporary flair included a Fynbos Sorbet palette cleanser and Baked Alaska, "not done Ouma's way" - best described as a smile-inducing dish, even before tasting it.
Jacobs, formerly of Four Seasons Westcliff, where he led the award-winning pass at Flames, tells us that while he might be looking to break the mould in some instances, he and his team are pushing to put it back together in a totally unique way.
Cooking from the heart and memory as odes to aunties or grannies are no longer platitudes when you consider the selection Jacobs shared. And it's not just Heirloom that are under his care - with Bascule Bar and the Library Lounge as part of his culinary canvas.
The lunch menu certainly has set sizzling aspirations for the season ahead.
The Cape Grace is inviting guests to join them for an adventurous pairing of chardonnays at the end of June, featuring Atlas Swift - just ahead of their new winter menu launch in July. Advanced booking is advised.

Big Daddy When layabout Sonny faces being dumped by his girlfriend, he pledges to become more mature and accidentally finds himself caring for young Julian (Dylan and Cole Sprouse) who appears on his doorstep. However, just because an exhilarating thriller or a world-bending sci-fi series might have been axed before it could have a satisfying ending, that doesn't mean we can't still appreciate them years later. Metro readers have shared their favourite shows that they feel should have had at least one more season – and their answers are bursting with passion. From a beloved Netflix zombie comedy to a BBC historical drama, these are programmes that not only were cherished by their audiences but have also stood the test of time. Those six simple words captured audiences around the world when Heroes premiered almost 20 years ago, in 2006. The first season boasted an average of 14 million viewers, and it's still regarded as top-tier television. There have been attempts to revive Heroes following its initial 2010 cancellation. In 2015, a spin-off series called Heroes Reborn was released, and it's been claimed that another titled Heroes: Eclipsed is in development. Nonetheless, fans, including Jimi O'Doherty, wish there had been at least one more season of the original series. 'Wish they did volume 5 Brave New World,' they wrote. Heroes is available to buy on Prime Video. Metro's TV Editor Sabrina Barr shares the shows that she's personally gutted were axed before their time. Agent Carter It's been almost a decade, and I'm still heartbroken that Agent Carter was brushed to one side after just two seasons. As a Marvel superfan, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) instantly became one of my favourite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she made her debut in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. Following the presumed death of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Peggy is heartbroken, but jumps into action – and that's where Agent Carter picks up. It was a brilliant continuation of her story, and it's gutting that it was cut short. Agent Carter is available to stream on Disney Plus. 1899 I still haven't had a chance to watch Netflix's thriller series Dark yet. However, I did manage to catch 1899, a drama made by the same creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, and it blew my mind to smithereens. At first, it seemed as though it was just going to be a chilling period drama set on an eerie ship. But there is so much more to it than that… and I'm wary of revealing too much for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. All I'll say is – if you enjoy a psychological thriller, period dramas, sci-fis, a brilliant ensemble cast where characters from different countries who might have never met cross paths, then you're in for a treat. 1899 is available to stream on Netflix. Glow I'm a sucker for stories set in the 80s, and I love a fantastic female-led ensemble cast. So the minute I saw a glimpse of Glow, I knew that it'd be right up my street. I'll profess – I didn't know much about wrestling beforehand, and I'm still nowhere near an expert. But learning about the 'Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling' gave me a stronger appreciation for the sport, and made me want to find out more. It's such a shame that Glow was cancelled due to Covid, and that it couldn't be resuscitated. I will continue to hold it hope that even six years later, it could have legs in the future. Glow is available to stream on Netflix. Shadow and Bone As a devout fantasy fan, Shadow and Bone mesmerised every ounce of me. I haven't read the books (they're on my To Be Read list), but I had every faith in the show, and I wasn't left disappointed. The disappointment did come, however, when Netflix confirmed that season two would be its last, despite ending on a huge cliffhanger. What's more, this meant that the previously announced spin-off Six of Crows was also no longer going forward. If you've ever stumbled upon a Netflix post on Instagram and wondered why so many people are urging the streaming site to save Shadow and Bone, give it a watch and discover for yourself. Shadow and Bone is available to stream on Netflix. The Last Kingdom is an exception on this list, as the story did conclude in a feature-length film titled The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which was released on Netflix in 2023. However, for some fans, that didn't suffice. 'Would have preferred another series rather than Seven Kings Must Die,' Metro reader Michael Webb quipped about the show. The historical drama originally premiered on BBC Two in 2015, before moving to Netflix for its final three seasons. The Last Kingdom is available to stream on Netflix. Lockwood and Co. had a lot of promise. So much so that one of the lead actors, Ruby Stokes, stepped away from her role on Bridgerton to commit to the project. Despite the acclaim it received from critics and fans alike, the supernatural detective series was cancelled after just one season. 'Netflix couldn't even explain their decision with any conviction 'It was one of our top-rated shows ever, but the decision was made to not greenlight season two and concentrate on making new quality content',' Kirsty Sparkman fumed while speculating over the thought process behind the decision.. Macy Macleod added that they've 'never forgiven' those who decided Lockwood and Co. would be axed. Lockwood and Co. is available to stream on Netflix. Pushing Daisies is another TV show that fans will often bring up as an example of a series that not only was cancelled too soon, but also deserves a comeback. Starring Lee Pace, Anna Friel and Kristin Chenoweth among the stacked cast, the comedy-drama is about a pie-maker called Ned (Lee) who has the ability to bring dead things back to life, and uses the unusual skill to solve murder cases. The ending of the show was altered when the creators knew that it was being cancelled, to try and provide fans with a satisfying ending. But several people admitted that they felt as though it was rushed. 'Pushing Daisies, that cliffhanger was evil!' Vicky Cosgrove wrote in frustration. Pushing Daisies is available to buy on Prime Video. There are a plethora of sci-fi shows to choose from when you're looking for a new programme to binge on streaming, but one that stands out among fans is Dark Matter. More Trending Not to be mixed up with the series of the same name that premiered on Apple TV Plus last year, the 2015 space-based drama Dark Matter lasted for three seasons. 'Dark Matter deserved season four on Syfy. Syfy cancelled it after three seasons, even though season three was the build-up for season four. Stupid,' a Metro reader going by the name SaveHolbycity David stated. Dee Lever-Johns listed Dark Matter among a list of other sci-fi and fantasy shows that have had premature ends, including Killjoys, Shadow and Bone, Warrior Nun and Lockwood and Co., adding: 'Yet they keep some total rubbish on TV.' Happy Gilmore 2 is now available on the streaming giant's platform. It is the latest title in the long-term deal between the streamer and actor. Sandler has a lucrative agreement with Netflix, initially signed in 2014 and renewed multiple times, which has seen a number of movies added to the service. The deal was reportedly $250 million for four films. This includes movies starring the comedian to ones produced under his Happy Madison company. In a precarious high-wire act, he must balance business, family and adversaries on all sides in pursuit of the ultimate win. This is very different from Sandler's typical comedies and comes with a warning that it is at times, uncomfortable to watch. Many fans believe this is the one that the comic actor should have received an Oscar for. One fan said: "Adam Sandler 'was robbed' as Kathy Bates advised him. It's another one of his titles with a strong sports link and has him giving an earnest performance as oppose to digging for gags. A significantly less intense watch than Uncut Gems, Sandler plays a down-on-his-luck basketball scout who finds himself ready to return home for good. He yearns to achieve his dreams of becoming a coach. However, after he discovers an extraordinary and completely unknown player abroad, he brings the phenom back without his team's approval. One fan claimed: "I thought that it'd just be another sports movie, but it was more than I expected. It was a heartfelt story, with undertones of "Rocky" nostalgia, and an exceptional cast. Easily, one of Sandler's best" Hustle is streaming on Netflix. The Meyerowitz Stories Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, this is another that isn't your typical Sandler movie. An ensemble piece in which his performance is complimented by the presence of Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson and Adam Driver. The film follows estranged siblings who come together to celebrate their father, Harold Meyerowitz, and his work as an artist during an unorthodox family reunion in New York. One fan said: "Hilarious, heartfelt, quirky, witty family comedy-drama. Oh and it also stars a few acting giants too, Hoffman, Bergen, Stiller, Weaver, Thomspon and Sandler like you've never seen the dude before. Can't recommend this stellar little film highly enough." You Are So Not Invited to my Bat Mitzvah This 2023 release earned 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and sees Sandler take on a smaller role. Instead, it's his daughter who takes the spotlight. The film follows Stacy and Lydia are BFFs who've always dreamed about having epic bat mitzvahs. However, things start to go comically awry when a popular boy and middle school drama threatens their friendship and their rite of passage. One fan surmised: "A little cheesy, a bit predictable in some parts, but still an overall feel good film. You'll feel some emotions, get a few laughs. Adam Sandler steps back to let his (real life!) daughter Sunny steal the show" You Are So Not Invited to my Bat Mitzvah is streaming on Netflix. Leo A more family friendly entry sees Sandler play animated character Leo the Lizard. Leo has been stuck in the same Florida school for decades. When he learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape to freedom, but instead has to rescue his class from their horribly mean substitute teacher. One fan said: "Such an underrated movie! Most cartoon movies are for kids but you could watch this one even if your an adult and still enjoy it." Leo is streaming on Netflix. Big Daddy One of Sandler's classics currently available on Netflix sees him play irresponsible Koufax who is dumped by his girlfriend for an older man. He adopts a five-year-old boy to impress her. But after spending time with him, he decides to become the father the boy needs. One fan said: "Like a lot of the golden age Adam Sandler films, it is quite a memorable and eminently quotable film. It also has great lessons about growing up and not judging books by their cover, and not being a bully." Big Daddy is streaming on Netflix. Happy Gilmore While Sandler is reprising his role of Happy Gilmore for a new sequel just released on Netflix, the original is also available. Time will tell whether or not fans believe if the follow up lives up to the 1996 original. Those that aren't familiar with the first outing should definitely check it out. Sandler plays titular character Happy, an aspiring hockey player who joins the PGA tour to make some money to save his grandma's house. But he doesn't really have the temper to go up against the favourite of the game and win the championship. One fan posted: "One of the most beloved Adam Sandler movies of all time. It received a reputation as a cult classic. The movie strikes at an effective blend of funny silly comedy, and relatable drama." Happy Gilmore is streaming on Netflix. Spaceman If you're looking forward to Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary then Spaceman is a good primer. It holds a similar premise albeit some significant differences. Six months into a solo mission, a lonely astronaut confronts the cracks in his marriage with help from a mysterious creature he discovers on his ship. A fan claimed: "This movie is a true masterpiece, designed for those who appreciate deep, reflective, and psychologically advanced narratives. It's not merely entertainment, but a profound exploration that offers wisdom and insight." Spaceman is streaming on Netflix. Adam Sandler: Love You Strictly not a movie but Sandler's latest comedy special. However, directed by one of the Safdie's it is bookended by what feels like a short film. There are even some on stage antics that will make you wonder which parts are scripted. Receiving 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an Emmy nomination, it deserves a place among Sandler's best and a must watch for fans of the comedian's career. On fan claimed: "I honestly think this was a piece of art, there is no other comedy special like it, making you feel like you're watching a scene of a movie, great songs, the ending is something that we'll look back and appreciate so much more in the future."
