Mystery as it's claimed Sydney Swans AFL coach John Longmire made a VERY suspicious move on grand final day
John Longmire's decorated coaching career has taken a bizarre turn following revelations about a missing recording from the 2024 AFL Grand Final.
The former Sydney Swans coach, who stepped down at the end of that season, failed to return his coach's audio from the Swans' 60-point thrashing at the hands of the Brisbane Lions.
That audio was intended for the AFL's annual Sound The Alarm documentary, which gives fans an inside look at the biggest game of the season through real-time coach recordings.
Since 2019, the series has featured mic'd-up audio from both coaches on Grand Final day, capturing pre-game addresses, coaching box exchanges and three-quarter time instructions.
But for 2024, the audio from Longmire has vanished - and according to AFL insiders, it never even made it back to the league.
Channel Seven reporter Mitch Cleary broke the story on The Agenda Setters, revealing Longmire simply never returned the SD card containing the recording.
'John Longmire was mic'd up on the day,' Cleary said.
'But post-game, when he handed back the equipment to the AFL, he took the SD card and, to this day, the AFL don't have the SD card - he never gave it back.'
Cleary went on to say that Longmire tried to get the card working with his son after the game, without success.
The coach has since declined payment for his participation in the audio project, given the content was never recovered.
Though Cleary acknowledged clubs always have final say over what gets aired, the key difference here is that the AFL never got the chance to review it.
'It's up to the clubs and coaches to give approval,' he said.
'But in this case, the AFL never even received the content to begin with.'
That has left many wondering what was said inside Longmire's coaching box during the Swans' heavy defeat.
Longmire, known for his passionate style and infamous 'sprays,' has a history of giving intense feedback in the heat of battle.
Former Swans players such as Dan Hannebery, Steve Johnson and Josh Kennedy have all spoken about fierce verbal exchanges with the coach.
Kennedy has previously revealed Longmire's scathing halftime address against Essendon, while Jordan Dawson has spoken about a stern post-game conversation that shifted the course of his career.
Cleary believes the missing audio may contain similarly fiery commentary.
'I think there were things said in that coaches' box on the day that shouldn't see the light of day,' Cleary said.
'Some of it may have been about players, some of it just heat-of-the-moment stuff.'
Chris Fagan, who coached in the 2023 Grand Final and participated in the same series, said he understood why a coach might want to listen back to their own recordings.
Longmire's departure from the role adds another layer to the story.
He resigned two months after the Grand Final, despite having a contract for 2025.
His coaching record remains impressive: 333 games, 208 wins, one premiership in 2012, and four losing Grand Finals, including three by massive margins.
He now serves in a performance director role at the Swans, with Dean Cox stepping up as senior coach.

Live Lions v Western Force: Build-up and latest updates from first tour match in Australia
Good morning everyone and welcome! The 2025 British and Irish Lions are in Perth to face Western Force in what is their first of nine games on Australian soil, culminating of course with a three-Test series against the Wallabies. There are a couple of hours until kick-off at Optus Stadium, so the plan is to pace ourselves and offer up a comprehensive preview of what should be an intriguing fixture. Force finished ninth on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder, winning four of 14 matches. Only Fijian Drua and Highlanders were below them, but they are a tight-knit team with plenty of incentive to ruffle the Lions. Put it this way, I would be impressed if the tourists record a result close to the 69-17 victory they landed back in 2013. Please, wherever you are in the world, get involved in the comments section if you have any questions or discussion points. John Fogarty, the Lions scrum coach, was up for media duties at the captain's run yesterday. He will have been happy, surely, with how dominant the Lions were in his area of expertise against Argentina eight days ago. Ellis Genge and Finlay Bealham were exceptional. However, a 28-24 loss to the Pumas in Dublin requires a reaction. 'The lads need to create moments for people to get behind,' said Fogarty. 'Whether it's in a scrum or off a line-out or attacking play or defensive play, we need to make sure we're creating moments that capture the minds of the people that matter most. That's the plan. 'It's an amazing thing, the Lions. You get behind it instantly. It was disappointing against Argentina because you feel like you're letting people down a little bit due to the performance and the result.' Only an assured display and a comfortable win, one senses, will do for the Lions here.

Why a stubborn footy star REFUSES to confirm where he is playing in 2026 - 'don't feel it is a distraction'
Daly Cherry-Evans has always operated on his own terms - and that isn't about to change as rumours continue to swirl surrounding his playing future. The Manly Sea Eagles captain, 36, is expected to link up with the Sydney Roosters next season, but confirmation will follow when the halfback is ready. 'There won't be anything happening soon, I dare say,' Cherry-Evans said on Friday following the win over the Wests Tigers when asked by reporters if he was close to announcing his next move. 'We've spoken about it as a team, we definitely don't feel it (my future) is a distraction.' Pressed on whether he may retire, Cherry-Evans - who made his NRL debut for the club in 2011 - was coy in his response. 'So we don't go down a rabbit hole, I'll clarify it one more time,' he responded. 'I've made the decision (in March) so Manly were aware, and so I could afford myself the freedom to make a choice that was best for me next year. 'When I do make that announcement it will be because it's the best situation for me and my future. 'The most important thing is how we (Manly) play this year.' While 'DCE' continues to frustrate some footy journalists, teammate Tom Trbojevic insists there is no divide at Brookvale. 'I've been comfortable with it since day dot,' the centre said as speculation increases the dragged out decision has destabilised the club. 'He's come and he's openly said what he wants to do and he's entitled to do that. 'I thought Cherry was going to be at this club his whole career. So (in March) that was a shock. 'But we're out here doing our job and what he's doing next year is not going to affect me doing my job. 'He's played footy for long enough to make decisions on his own terms and it is what it is.'

British and Irish Lions vs Western Force live: Latest score and updates as tourists play first match in Australia
The British and Irish Lions face the Western Force in their first match on Australian soil in Perth as the tourists bid to bounce back from defeat to Argentina. Andy Farrell was left furious with his side's showing Dublin as they fell to a narrow loss against the Pumas, though there were signs of encouragement for the head coach as his squad continue to get up to speed. Farrell has rung the changes for this initial outing Down Under having been able to more fully integrate the Leinster contingent, and those involved in the Premiership final, after their delayed arrival into camp. It is the Western Force selection, however, that has generated more of the talking points this week, with the Lions accusing Wallabies boss Joe Schmidt of breaching the terms of the tour agreement but failing to release some of his Australia stars. There are, however, a few familiar faces on show for the Super Rugby Pacific side: scrum half Nic White is one of the game's great pests and controllers, while playmaker Ben Donaldson, a late call-up after injury struck Kurtley Beale, had a strong Super Rugby Pacific season. Lions vs Western Force live British and Irish Lions vs Western Force live The British and Irish Lions have landed in Australia and begin life Down Under with an intriguing meeting with the Western Force. It was a disappointing start for the tourists as the curtain came up on their summer with defeat to Argentina in Dublin, leaving Andy Farrell ticking - though there was plenty to encourage the Lions head coach, too. To Perth, then, for the first match of the tour proper. Kick off at Optus Stadium is at 11am BST. Harry Latham-Coyle27 June 2025 11:13
