Raul Jiménez puts Mexico into 12th Gold Cup final

Perth Now03-07-2025
Raúl Jiménez scored in the 50th minute off an assist from 16-year-old Gilberto Mora to put Mexico into their 12th CONCACAF Gold Cup final with a 1-0 win over Honduras.
El Tri advanced to play the United States in the final Sunday night in Houston for the eighth meeting in the title game between the countries with Mexico owning a 5-2 edge. Mexico have won nine Gold Cups, the US seven and Canada one.
Mexico broke through early in the second half on a play started by Alexis Vega with a pass to Mora near the top of the box. Mora slid a pass to Jiménez, who beat Edrick Menjívar with a right-footed shot for his 42nd career international goal.
No.17-ranked Mexico appeared to add to that lead a few minutes later when Edson Álvarez tapped in a goal off a set piece, but it was ruled offside by video review.
But El Tri managed to hold onto that lead as 75th-ranked Honduras couldn't muster an equaliser.
"We had a deserved victory," coach Javier Aguirre said through an interpreter.
Honduras reached this stage for the first time since 2013 despite losing the opener of the tournament 6-0 to Canada. The Hondurans haven't made the final since the inaugural tournament in 1991 when they lost in penalty kicks to the US.
Mexico haven't conceded a goal in 383 minutes and 'keeper Luis Malagón had to make only one save in the last three matches - an easy stop on Dixon Ramírez's shot from outside the box late in the first half.
El Tri's had two good opportunities late in the first half. Johan Vásquez's shot in the box deflected off Honduran defender Denil Maldonado and right into the hands of goalie Menjívar.
Menjívar then made a sharp save against Marcel Ruíz in the 42nd minute and Julián Martínez cleared the rebound out of danger.
There was a heated moment in the 11th minute when a ball was played into the Mexico bench area.
Romell Quioto aggressively tried to get the ball for Honduras and Mexican reserve Guillermo Ochoa took exception, leading to players on both teams getting heated and a yellow card for Ochoa.

Mexico star Hernandez sorry for sexist comments

Mexican football icon Javier Hernandez apologised on Thursday for making sexist remarks which led to him being sanctioned by Mexico's football federation and his club Guadalajara. Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Hernandez, 37, triggered uproar after comments in a TikTok video in which he accused women of "failing" and "eradicating masculinity". "Embody your feminine energy by caring, nurturing, giving life, cleaning and supporting the home," Hernandez said in the video. "Don't be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man who only wants one thing: to see you happy." The comments prompted an outcry from Mexican football authorities while Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum also weighed in on Wednesday, denouncing Hernandez's remarks as representing a "very macho idea" of women. Sheinbaum added that while Hernandez -- affectionately known as "Chicharito (little pea)" -- was a "great footballer", he still "had a lot to learn". The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said Hernandez's comments "promote sexist stereotypes and go against gender equality in sport", describing the remarks as a form of "media violence". The federation said it had imposed a fine and given Hernandez a warning about the comments. In a statement posted on Instagram on Thursday, Hernandez expressed regret for the remarks. "I deeply regret any confusion or discomfort my recent comments may have caused," Hernandez wrote in a post. "It was never my intention to mock, hurt, or divide... I listen, I reflect, and I commit to expressing myself with greater clarity and sensitivity, especially on such sensitive issues." Hernandez is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in Mexican history, scoring 59 goals in 157 appearances for Manchester United before stints at Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla and Los Angeles Galaxy. He is also Mexico's all-time leading international goalscorer, with 52 goals in 109 appearances. str/cl/ole/bm/rcw/nf

‘This is that on steroids': Beer Footy and Food Festival returns with a bang

Jai Arrow is relieved to be one of the last fit men standing at the Rabbitohs this season, but there is one downside to his clean bill of health with the veteran forward 'filthy' that he'll miss Saturday's Beer Footy and Food Festival at Henson Park. More than 10,000 people are expected to fill out the suburban venue where they'll be treated to 30 different beer vendors, 20 food trucks, live pro wrestling and streaker bull rush as the Jets take on the Dragons in the NSW Cup. Arrow will be in Gosford preparing to take on the Sharks when the annual event gets under way, and he'll be jealous when he sees all the pictures on social media of people living it up on the famous hill. 'It looks unreal,' he said at the launch of the event as he tucked into a Japanese-Mexican fusion taco. 'I'm filthy that we're playing on Saturday night at 7.30. If it had been Friday night, it would have been ideal. 'That's what I was saying to (Sharks forward) Toby Rudolf. Both of us are playing each other this week, and we would have been here straight after the game if we were playing on Friday night. 'It looks like a really cool event. You've got the wrestlers here which I'm quite intrigued about because I know James Graham wrestled one of those boys last year at one of their big events. 'It'll be a cracking day and I'm spewing that I'm missing out on it.' Roosters lock Victor Radley is sidelined with a shoulder injury but will make the trip to enjoy an afternoon of old-school fun. 'A lot of my friends play for the North Sydney Bears, and you go to North Sydney Oval on a random Saturday or Sunday afternoon and you watch the footy and it's such a great day,' he said. 'This is that on steroids. 'It's one of the best days of the year for any footy fan.' One of the highlights of the day will be streaker bull rush, which is a spin on the old schoolyard game. Hit artist Freddy Crabs was there to explain the game at the launch and copped a few bruising shots for his troubles, including a couple of heavy hits from Roosters NRLW star Jasmin Strange. 'I'm so sore from my game on Sunday so I better post that video because my S and C (strength and conditioning) team won't be happy with me doing full contact after that,' she laughed.

Unretired Aussie wants world title by NYE

Unretired Australian boxer Andrew Moloney is promising a world title by year's end as he prepares for a Mexican debut against Argi Cortes. The veterans will wage an IBF super flyweight eliminator war in Durango on August 9, three weeks later than it was initially scheduled for in Monterrey. Moloney (27-4) furiously declared he was quitting the sport after losing a controversial points decision to Pedro Guevara, for the interim WBC super flyweight title, in Perth last May. But the former secondary WBA belt holder, 34 and 11 years on from his professional debut, had a change of heart and is now two wins away from his biggest boxing moment. "This is a must-win," he told AAP after landing in Mexico. Moloney is 6-2 since losing his controversial Joshua Franco trilogy that began in the MGM Grand's Las Vegas bubble due to COVID-19 in 2020. "It's been years of hard work to get back to this position and I won't let this opportunity slip," he said. "I will be world champion again before the end of 2025. "I'm extremely excited about this fight. "I'm on fire in the gym at the moment and preparation has been perfect. "Cortes is a good, well-rounded fighter. "He can box and can brawl when he needs to, but I believe his style suits me perfectly and believe I am better than him in every department." Cortes (27-4-2) has only once fought outside of Mexico, taking Junto Nakatani the distance for the first time in a 2023 title bout months after the Japanese star had delivered Moloney a brutal final-round knockout. The victor next month will be next in line to face fellow Mexican Willibaldo Garcia, who edged countryman Rene Calixto to claim the vacant IBF crown in May. "He puts a lot of pressure on his opponents but he definitely has holes in his game," Moloney said of the IBF champion. "That is a fight I'm very confident of winning but I can't look past Cortes yet. "I enjoy going to enemy territory and fighting in my opponents' backyard. "I have never been to Mexico and all of my favourite fighters are Mexican so I'm looking forward to the experience."
